I find it hard to believe, with as popular as Starbucks is, that there is not more information about their products. I can't do Gluten, soy, or dairy. So, I am wondering what I can get there. I would obviously have to bring my own rice milk, but is the coffee ok, and are the flavored syrups ok?? Any suggestions?? Oh, how I miss Starbucks Caramel mocha cappachino.

There is plenty of info. Go to Open Original Shared Link :D

That doesn't have any gluten info though.

I emailed them to inquire about gluten-free Starbucks products in Canada and got this response:

"Hello Jillian,

Thank you for contacting Starbucks Coffee Company. I would first like to apologize for my delay in getting back to you; I appreciate your patience.

In regards to your inquiry, we are unable to indicate any handcrafted beverage or unpackaged food item as being "gluten-free" unless it is specifically produced and packaged to meet gluten-free requirements (such as gluten-free KIND Bars). I apologize for any inconvenience.

Please know that you may view nutritional information for many of our beverages at Open Original Shared Link This link will also allow you to view store-specific information on calories, ingredients and allergens related to our food items.

Please note that nutrition and ingredient information is provided by the suppliers who manufacture food and beverage products for Starbucks Coffee Company.Starbucks attempts to provide product information that is as complete as possible. Variations may exist due to periodic changes in formulations. Serving sizes may vary from those used to calculate nutrition information. New product introduction or product changes may cause the information to be incomplete. All of our non-packaged food products are produced and stored in environments where known allergens are present. Some items may not be available in all locations. Ahhh... you got the typical response for CYA. I hate those! I got the same response from them regarding their choc covered espresso beans.

My mom and I drink their brewed coffee with no gluten issues. She's extremely symptomatic, I am not. She's never had a problem so far. Other than that I can't say what else is safe. Good luck!

Thanks for checking on that. I guess Starbucks is always going to be a gamble. I feel ok about the coffee, but what I am really wondering about is the Yummy syrups they use to flavor it. I looked at the bottle one day and everything seemed ok except the natural flavors. Natural flavors can mean wheat - right??

JillianLindsay Enthusiast

Yeah, no one wants to take responsibility for their product anymore, everything is "use at your own risk"

If they are unwilling to provide better information or do the work to ensure they have safe products, then I for one will not be giving them my business at all.

Lexi -- yes, natural flavours can be a risk. You can find out who manufactures the syrups and try contacting them directly.

There was another disucssion about Starbucks in which it was stated that all of the drinks are safe except for the mochas and anything containing chocolate chips as they contain gluten, but I was hoping the company would confirm this themselves.

I guess it's an individual choice whether or not to risk it :) I'm going to save myself $5/coffee and make it at home!

Cheers,

Jillian

Hi Theresa,  A few of my friends have your same story. You may be right about barley, etc.  18 years ago at a football game while clapping, suddenly my 4th finger was in agony.  It looked like a vein had burst. It was blue for a couple hours, then disappeared.  Finally realized it happened every time when drinking beer.  It's occurred several times over the years when opening a jar, lifting something that was a bit heavy, holding on to tight to something.  Immediate icing stops the pain and discoloration.  Now avoiding wheat in the US, it rarely happens.  Thanks for the reminder.  Will have Entero Labs run another test. Unfortunately they've relocated to Switzerland/Greece.

The EMA test is an old and less sensitive test for anti-tTG2 antibodies. It relies on a technician using a microscope to check for fluorescence of a labelled substrate (typically monkey oesophagus or human umbilicus), giving a simple positive/negative result. It is similar to running a standard anti-tTG2 test but with a high cut-off, making it more specific but less sensitive. Transient rises in tTG2 can be caused by e.g. viral infections and inflammation. Very high levels of anti-tTG2 (>x10 standard range) are almost certainly coeliac disease but moderately raised levels can have several causes apart from coeliac disease. Other food allergies can cause villi blunting but that is much rarer than coeliac disease or other non-coeliac causes. Not All That Flattens Villi Is Celiac Disease: A Review of Enteropathies

Maybe you have a low  intolerance to Wheat.   Rye, Barley and Malt are the gluten in Celiac disease.  It has always been stated Wheat and Gluten, not just a Wheat intolerance.  Barley will keep me in bed for (2) weeks.  Gut, Migrains, Brain fog, Diahrea.  It is miserable.  And when I was a toddler the doctor would give me a malt medicine because I always had Anemia and did not grow.  Boy was he off.  But at that time the US didn't know anyone about Celiac.  This was the 1940s and 50s.  I had my first episode at 9 months and did not get a diagnosis until I was 50.  My immune system was so shot before being diagnoised, so now I live with the consequences of it. I was so upset when Manufacturers didn't want to label their products so they added barley to the product.  It was mostly the cereal industry.  3 of my favorite cereals were excluded because of this. Malt gives me a bad Gut reaction.

Thanks much Scott.  Well said, and heeded.   I don't have Celiac, which is fortunate.
