Withdrawl Symtoms Or Experiences

It seems I'm going up and down with moods this week (started gluten-free Oct 12)

I've experienced hostile anger (having to accept this change of eating)

Depression and sadness (no one gets it or is very considerate of your brand new life)

Fog is gone, then comes back with tiredness

Vision is clear and then out of focus again

Pain comes and goes in the shoulder (nothing like it was tho)

No neck swelling or ankle swelling - which is great!

I'm having BM's 3-4 times a day (not D) and urinating all the time!

I feel weak and I feel strong - then weak then energetic and then weak.............

What have you gone thru with your withdrawls? How long do you think they'll last?

DAMN! gotta pee! :o

Any stories and experiences will help mucho lotta!

Hi There ... I have been gluten free now for about 3 weeks. The first 1 1/2 was great! My constipation had cleared up and I was feeling great.

Then the "hungries" set in! It seems as though I am starving...I want to eat everything in sight.

I feel shaky and weak especially in the morning when I have gone several hours without food...

The weak and shaky feelings go away mid morning when the food gets in my bloodstream....

I am going to try to stay up later at night and have a late night snack before bed.....

I feel like I am in DETOX!

It almost feels like low blood sugar, but I know my sugars are fine...because I had them checked out.

I feel that this perhaps, (of course I am no MD), that it is due to my body craving nutrients or something...

My emotions are on a roller coaster...I am angry that this was not picked up, angry because I can see those

within my family that have suffered so from Celiac....sometimes I just want to cry like a baby....

Maybe some well seasoned gluten-free folks can chime in here with their withdrawal experiences.

Homemaker,

I can relate to you!

The emotional rollercoaster for what ever reason there is at the time is crazy!

I had found that one nite I woke at 12:30 with an attack or 'being glutened' with the swelling of the neck and a twisted aching shoulder.........and after that, I craved food so bad that I ate 5 eggs and 4 slices of gluten free bread! I never do that in one setting!

But I'm at the point now where I don't have cravings while being gluten free.

In fact - I eat less and am so satisfied.........perhaps because my mind concentrates on being gluten free more that my stomach comes second to my stresses having to provide for it.

I digest gluten free foods so much easier compared to a BMT from subway on whole grain.....which I thought I was gonna miss the hardest but surprisingly don't.

I'm still with flavor - just different ingredients.

The shoulder blades feels so tight today that I had to have our safety director rub it out or else I was going to start whining!

Thankfully my coworkers help me deal more than I would have expected.

I was feeling so lethargic today sitting at my computer doing paperwork that I wanted to take a nap!

I supply our production workers with paperwork for their shift so I couldn't just peter-out....so I took a nodoz just to put the boost back in me....and it did!

I'm still unrinating 10 times or more a day - but not dehydrated.

Thanks for sharing - I haven't gone thru the shakes yet - but I'm not good company at times for sure!

Oh my goodness can I relate to that! It seems like I can eat alot of food and not really feel that full..

I am so more aware of my hunger cycles...than I was when I was eating gluten...

It IS amazing the way I view food this last week.

I used to have something going in my mouth all day long - even if it was grapes at my desk.

I tried that again today and ....... I'd pick one every 30-45 minutes....I was done and I'd grab one anyways.....so they got put away.

I do notice also (today especially) that I feel almost vertigo - or like I'm walking thru water again - my feet just don't feel stable with my mind.......today I'm just very unstable (like the vertigo effect).

Do you now or before going gluten-free ever get the feeling of lightheadedness or dizziness? Like your air has obviously been blocked from your head?

I was feeling that alot before going gluten-free - and a couple times since going off gluten.

If others can relate - I don't have to worry so much about what I'm experiencing.

I DO feel like a junkie that's going thru withdrawls from my drug of choice - but the 'fix' is so not worth it.

I do feel that way when I first get up, it takes a few hours for it to pass, after I have had something to eat.

I never experienced it before going gluten free...for me it is related to the withdrawal of gluten.

I plan on riding the wave with my gluten-free diet. I have had too many people with horrible diseases due to

Celiac, to take my gluten sensitivity lightly...

I never experienced it before going gluten free...for me it is related to the withdrawal of gluten.

I plan on riding the wave with my gluten-free diet. I have had too many people with horrible diseases due to

Celiac, to take my gluten sensitivity lightly...

My story:

Went gluten-free on August 2009, after having had symptoms for like 4-5 months.

First the hunger came, and it was massive. I'd be weak and shaky a lot, and eating huge meals. I didn't seem to be putting on weight, until suddenly I put on muscle, but not fat. (The fat came later, but at the time, I was still consuming small amounts of gluten without realizing it. Had I discovered that problem earlier, I probably wouldn't have put on the fat)

Withdrawal symptoms came shortly after the hunger. Pins and needles feeling in my body. Heartburn. Chills in my legs and forehead. Itchiness with itches that seem to be inside me. The feeling of "bugs crawling all over me". Etc. They came and came HARD, then got slightly better, then worse, then better, then real bad, then much better, etc.

Only last weekend did I learn that Fudgsicles contained malt powder, and therefore gluten, and cut them out. I noticed a big drop in my remaining hunger cravings! But guess what? Withdrawal again, and a new symptom: eating food makes me fatigued and feel lightheaded or have a bit of a headache for a while (this symptom showed up less than 2 weeks ago, and hit its peak 2 days before I stopped eating Fudgsicles. It has largely shown improvement since then, but has been coming and going).

So yeah, withdrawal is real, may be different for each person, and I'm going through it. I'd ALMOST reached the end, only to discover that I was still consuming small amounts of gluten from another source, so now I'm having the withdrawal symptoms again (plus a new one). Fortunately, the previous withdrawal symptoms (pins and needles, chills, etc.) aren't as bad this time around, even if they have returned.

I plan to wait this out. The fact that I'm only 28, had Celiac for only a short while before self-diagnosing via the internet (very glad for that internet), and that a vaccine/cure is being developed and has already entered Phase I testing (as of April of this year!), keep me going. I expect a cure in our lifetimes! Maybe within the next 5 years!

I did have the itchy palms before I was diagnosed.

I had numbness in my mouth and nose and then tingling too.

fortunately I'm not there anymore.

I'm working on the withdrawl now of weak, lethargic and sleep problems.

eye focus is in and out with every day and every new experience thru this gluten free new life.

I'm now curious about V8.........I swear I saw that on a safe list.

anyone really know for sure?

I am feeling a tad better today...perhaps my withdrawal is turning the corner....

It helped to have a late night snack so my blood sugars don't feel so wacky in

the morning....I had a gluten-free Graham Cracker and peanut butter with a glass of milk...

Yes I am still on milk...I will wait till my testing comes back to see if I have to

NIX the COW JUICE... LOL :P

Homemaker,

Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I was starting to get scared there and doubt what I've read.lol

That wouldn't be uncommon with the withdrawls I'm having.......at work, I was to make labels for our material bundles going to the customer - I f'd up over 70 of them! Just like I could see what I was doing but my mind wasn't comprehending what I was entering on the labels.

I swear I'm a puppet on a string being controlled by some other force! and I'm 98% positive I'm not glutened!

I do have to wonder about fixodent tho. that is the 2% I haven't checked up on (since it's sealed to my gums)

Anyone have a clue on that one?

I found this online...but I don't know how reliable it is....

Fixodent"We don't add gluten to Fixodent, but it's possible there may be a trace amount in the product due to the raw materials used to make it. " 4/21/07

Thanks for checking!

that sucks - any product that works the best is not my gluten-free friend.

Guess I'll be checking more into the adhesives!

You're awesome.

Glad you're coping a bit easier too - as for me, good thing my boss is understanding to the whole gluten free deal.

And I hope you are too - I didn't notice how bad my title was presented!

Withdrawl symtoms? SYMPTOMS!!!!

and I believe I left out the 'a' perhaps? before rollercoaster.

OY VEY!

this is NOT me.........I have to learn to be abnormal now!

Hello all! My life in the last five years has been crazy. I got married in 2020 at the age of 27, pregnant with our first child almost two months later, gave birth in 2021. We had another baby in April of 2023 and our last baby this March of 2025. I had some issues after my second but nothing ever made me think, "I should see a doctor about this." After having my last baby this year, my body has finally started to find its new rhythm and balance...but things started to feel out of sorts. A lot of symptoms were convoluted with postpartum symptoms, and, to top it all off, my cycle came back about 4m postpartum. I was having reoccurring migraines, nausea, joint pain, numbness in my right arm, hand and fingers, tummy problems, hives. I finally went to my PCP in August just for a wellness check and I brought up my ailments. I'm so thankful for a doctor that listens and is thorough. He ended up running a food allergy panel, an environmental respiratory panel, and a celiac panel. I found out I was allergic to wheat, allergic to about every plant and dust mites, and I did have celiac. I had an endoscopy done on October 3 and my results confirmed celiac in the early stages! I am truly blessed to have an answer to my issues. When I eat gluten, my brain feels like it's on fire and like someone is squeezing it. I can't think straight and I zone out easily. My eyes can't focus. I get a super bad migraine and nausea. I get so tired and irritable and anxious. My body hurts sometimes and my gut gets bloated, gassy, constipated, and ends with bowel movements. All this time I thought I was just having mom brain or feeling the effects of postpartum, sleep deprivation, and the like (which I probably was having and the celiac disease just ramped it up!) I have yet to see a dietician but I've already been eating and shopping gluten-free. My husband and I have been working on turning our kitchen 100% gluten-free (we didn't think this would be so expensive but he assured me that my health is worth all the money in the world). There are still a few things to replace and clean. I'm already getting tired of reading labels. I even replaced some of my personal hygiene care for myself and the kids because they were either made with oats or not labeled gluten-free. I have already started feeling better but have made some mistakes along the way or have gotten contamination thrown into the mix. It's been hard! Today I joked that I got diagnosed at the worst time of the year with all the holidays coming up. I will just need to bring my own food to have and to share. It will be okay but different after years of eating "normally". Today I ordered in person at Chipotle and was trying not to feel self-conscious as the line got long because they were following food-allergy protocols. It's all worth it to be the healthiest version of myself for me and my family. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little overwhelmed and a little overloaded!  I am thankful for this community and I look forward to learning more from you all. I need the help, that's for sure!

On the AIP diet, all processed foods are eliminated.  This includes gluten-free bread.  You'll be eating meats and vegetables, mostly.  Meats that are processed, like sausages, sandwich meats, bacons, chicken nuggets, etc., are eliminated as well.  Veggies should be fresh, or frozen without other ingredients like sauces or seasonings.  Nightshade vegetables (eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers) are excluded.  They contain alkaloids that promote a leaky gut and inflammation.  Dairy and eggs are also eliminated.   I know it sounds really stark, but eating this way really improved my health.  The AIP diet can be low in nutrients, and, with malabsorption, it's important to supplement vitamins and minerals.

Thank you for responding and for prayers.  So sorry for your struggles, I will keep you in mine.  You are so young to have so many struggles, mine are mild by comparison.  I didn't have Celiac Disease (celiac disease) until I had my gallbladder removed 13 years ago; at least nothing I was aware of.  Following surgery: multiple symptoms/oddities appeared including ridges on fingernails, eczema, hair falling out in patches, dry eyes, upset stomach constantly and other weird symptoms that I don't really remember.  Gastro did tests and endoscopy and verified celiac disease. Re heart: I was born with Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) and an irregular heartbeat, yet heart was extremely strong.  It was difficult to pick up the irregular heartbeat on the EKG per cardiologist.  I had Covid at 77, recovered in 10 days and 2 weeks later developed long Covid. What the doctors and nurses called the "kickoff to long Covid, was A-fib.  I didn't know what was going on with my heart and had ignored early symptoms as some kind of passing aftereffect stemming from Covid.  I was right about where it came from, but wrong on it being "passing".  I have A-fib as my permanent reminder of Covid and take Flecainide every morning and night and will for the rest of my life to stabilize my heartbeat.
    • larc
When I accidentally consume gluten it compromises the well-being of my heart and arteries. Last time I had a significant exposure, about six months ago, I had AFib for about ten days. It came on every day around dinner time. After the ten days or so it went away and hasn't come back.  My cardiologist offered me a collection of pharmaceuticals at the time.  But I passed on them.
    • klmgarland
So I should not eat my gluten free bread?  I will try the vitamins.  Thank you all so very much for your ideas and understanding.  I'm feeling better today and have gathered back my composure! Thank you kitty kitty   I am going to look this diet up right away.  And read the paleo diet and really see if I can make this a better situation then it currently is.
