Hi. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I'd appreciate any type of a response as to if you think I should ask my pcp for a celiac test this afternoon.

I've had a variety of symptoms, most of which I chalked up to different reasons, but, here is my list, broken up into when I noticed the symptoms.

Most of Adulthood:

Back Pain (chalked up to being overweight and a family history of early arthritis)

Severely Dry Skin

Upset Stomach whenever I would eat pizza or pasta with any type of greasy or rich foods. (Figured I was sensitive to the grease.)

Last Year (following gallbladder removal):

Stomach cramps (chalked up to losing gallbladder)

Fatigue

Anxiety

This Year (following a miscarriage in July):

Body Aches. I feel like I've run miles and my muscles are sore, but I have done nothing and stretching doesn't help.

Mouth Ulcers which reoccur. I've never had canker sores and started getting them this October.

A small rash on my neck appeared last month, which has yet to completely go away.

Nausea. Pops up periodically. I thought maybe I was pregnant again, but I'm on birth control and keep having regular periods.

Finally going to the dr today at 2 p.m. EST because the canker sores, body / back pain, and nausea / vomiting are getting to be too much.

I'm thinking it may be Celiac disease, but goodness, I hope not! I am a carbohydrate junkie and love my beer.

Please let me know if this sounds familiar to any of you. I just want to figure out what is wrong and go back to feeling healthy again. :(

Morning,

I just found out last week that I have Celiac Disease. I had years of severe health problems....

Have you seen a Naturopathic Doctor?

My GP was unable to diagnose for 10+ yrs.

As of now, I have seen no one. I am finally at the point that I am fed up and am going to my PCP to discuss.

I had similar problems. Constant back and hip pain. Super sry skin. Had problems getting pregnant and staying pregnant. Over weight - diets never worked. Tired and anxious. I had a rash on my knee for two years! Was diagnosed March 6th and I am now just starting to feel better on some days. Hang in there.

You've probably seen here that the list of possible symptoms of celiac/gluten intolerance is long and varied. I had some obvious ones (gastric upset, pain etc), but the mouth ulcers was one I never thought about until they disappeared completely within 2 weeks of going gluten-free. The only time I've had them since is after a glutening!

As a general recommendation I would ask to get copies of your blood tests, especially if they say that gluten is not an issue for you. i had a positive blood test but negative biopsy, so was told categorically that gluten was not the cause of my problems. I kept eating it for another year until another GP took one look at the original blood tests and told me immediately to to gluten free. You can always post your results here for expert eyes to take a look at!

Thanks for the responses.

I had a full metabolic and Celiac blood panel done yesterday, along with a urinalysis.

As I've noticed with some GP's, he was very anxious to give me things to fix the symptoms. Rash cream, dental paste for the canker sores, and Prilosec for my stomach.

But, he did recommend that I try a lactose free diet or a gluten free diet for the three weeks before my next appointment to see if it helps me.

So... as much as I hate the thought of never having my beer, pasta, or white bread again, I am officially starting my gluten free diet this morning. *sigh*

Wish me luck!

I'll post the test results here in a few weeks to see what you all think.

I've been on gluten-free for 3 days, good luck! You can do it! :) (I'd do whichever one you think is bothering you the most-dairy doesn't bother me)

Thanks! :)

I was hoping I would hear back on some test results tonight, but no such luck.

Oh well, day 1 down! :)

If the lab results come back negative please don't get discouraged. You could still be reacting to gluten or wheat. Wheat has about 500 proteins in it and gluten is an enormous molecule. The test they use look only at whether you are reacting enough to a small part of the gluten molecule to damage your gut. You could have wheat allergy or gluten sensitivity or even (like me)grain allergy). You might look at the youtube videos I list below and try a gluten free diet (paying lots of attention to the issues of cross contamination and the way grain derivatives are used for flavoring/texture in many foods.

Good Luck!

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

How do I contact someone at celiac.com concerning the cessation of my weekly e-newsletter? I had been receiving it regularly for years. When I tried to sign-up on the website, my email was not accepted. I tried again with a new email address and that was rejected as well. Thank you in advance!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
