Hi All -

I've been reading posts for a few months now and am finally contributing with a question. I haven't fully been diagnosed with Celiac yet, b/c I think my doctor is completely incompetent regarding the disease (she had me get blood tests after I had been gluten-free for months - of course, they came back negative and she was not interested in taking any other steps). I'm in the process of changing my doctor - even if I'm eating a gluten free diet, I would like to know if I have Celiac for many other reasons. The diet alone isn't going to be the answer to ensuring I'm healthy if a test comes back positive. I've maintained a gluten free diet for about 1 year now, and on average, feel great. I know I may have some contamination incidents, which I'm learning more how to avoid.

I slipped up this weekend and had a small, tiny sliver (1" wide) of a sandwich and 1/2 a beer. I have felt horrible ever since! This was on Saturday and I'm still insanely bloated - my husband asks what I feel like, and all I can say is really boated and full around my abdomen (I look very pregnant), but also "squishy" and bloated around my upper back area, which is the most uncomfortable of it all. I don't know how else to describe that, other than maybe spongey.

Has anyone else had the upper back squishyness/spongeyness, and is there anything to help with this and the other bloat feelings? It seems to be my first symptom, followed by a lot of abdominal bloating, gas (which doesn't make the bloat go away) and constipation.

I'm really miserable right now, and would love any advice on how to alleviate symptoms. I'm aware that I did this to myself, so I have only myself to blame, but I get this way when I've accidentally had gluten as well.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Laker,

Maybe some milk of magnesia would help get things moving again. Getting the gluten out would be a good thing.

Hi Laker,

I'm sorry you feel so ill. I think your system is probably extra sensitive now that you've been gluten free for a year, so it will take at least a week, probably more for this to clear from your system no matter what you do, but I would try to take some kind of healing action everyday, such as digestive enzymes, magnesium/calcium supplements, water.

My system seizes up too when I get glutened, and I can't go (to the bathroom), which is what I most need to do, and it takes a few days or more for things to get on track again and for me to feel better. The Cal/Mg helps this a lot.

Also, make yourself comfortable in whatever way that makes you feel better. Most importantly, don't do this again. :)

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
