Removing Gluten From An Oven

I just moved into a new apartment and am not certain what I should do to remove any traces of gluten from the oven. It looks as if it was thoroughly cleaned. Does using the clean setting work? I've heard you cannot burn gluten away by putting on the clean setting. Is that true? Thanks so much!

From what I understand the cleaning setting should do the trick....If you have a cast iron skillet that is the recommeneded way to de-gluten it.

That's a tough one. However, given that the inside surfaces of ovens are usually fairly smooth, I'd hope it could be reliably cleaned well enough to be deemed safe.

The tricky spots might be where the racks are held in place, and at the joints of the wires of the racks themselves. Any tight corners too, like the edges of the glass in the door, hinges, etc.

Also...an easy solution is to not put any food directly on the oven racks, as long as your food doesn't touch the rack it wouldn't be glutened. Trick spots mentioned above are good things to clean, but it would be very unlikely that this would touch your food.

personally I would run the cleaning cycle and be done with it, but I am not overly sensitive or overly paranoid about gluten. I am careful about when I eat and where I eat, and only use certain things...etc, but I don't freak out over every little thing. If running non porious items through the dishwasher is considered decontaminated, I would assume that the running of the clean cycle n an oven would be fine.

Thanks. I'm unfortunately very sensitive. It doesn't take much to make me sick. It's a drag. However, I'm relatively newly diagnosed (8 months or so) and being this careful has kept me from getting sick. I'll probably do a combination of cleaning the oven with cleaning solution and using the clean setting just to be certain there's no residue. Thanks again!

Thanks you for this info! I will definitely do more research on it!

Her poop is totally normal since going gluten free. Once or twice per day.  She eats a lot of fruits and veggies. No juice. She said the squeezing is in the spot where her food goes in her belly. Definitely not dehydrated. She drinks tons of water.

Hurrah for an official diagnosis!   You may want to put the whole family on gluten free, as a preventative measure for the ones not testing positive right now.  Remember, exposure to gluten triggers the Celiac genes your kids have inherited from you.  Keeping them gluten free now, even though they don't test positive right now, can delay triggering Celiac Disease development in them.

@annirosex, Get your Vitamin D level checked.  Low Vitamin D can mess up menstrual cycles.  Vitamin D at healthy levels (80-100) acts as a hormone and regulates your immune system.  Thiamine Vitamin B 1 is needed to activate Vitamin D, so adding thiamine in the form Benfotiamine would be beneficial.

Thank you! I saw a different provider this week who took one look at all my medical information and declared it was celiac in the first 5 minutes of the appointment. I am still a bit in shock but so very thankful to have an official diagnosis. The doctor told me to have my children tested and one of them came back with a "weak positive" TTG IgA! Not sure what to think about that! This week has been a wild ride. Thankfully this website has such great information! I've been going through all the do's and don't's of cross contact etc.
