Anyone Else Exhausted All The Time?

Hey all! It was nice to read through the forums and find so many of you who are pregnant. I'm due the month after all you October ladies.

I'm a month into my second trimester now and I've read (and heard) that this is when we're supposed to get our energy back. I am glad the nausea is gone (thanks mostly to acupuncture), but I would like to get out and take walks again. I used to walk 3-4 miles 4 times a week and sleep 8-9 hours a night. Now since being preggo, I sleep 10 hours a nightor so, and nap twice a day, for an hour or so each nap. When I do get mild excercize it just wipes me out.

I've been gluten-free for almost a year now and wondered if this had anything to do with Celiac Disease.

There's really not a lot of info out there on pregnant Celiacs who are tired, so I'm counting on your experiences and advice. Thanks! (and good night!) ;)

Hey there, and welcome! I hear ya about being tired. I would love to just sleep the next few months away if I could. I have two other kids aged 3 1/3 and 1 1/2 so my naps are few and far between. I still feel pretty tired despite being gluten-free and taking vitamin B-12 shots. I wish I could tell what symptoms are pregnancy and which are Celiacs! I wish I could offer you more advice, but I thought i'd just co-sympathize with you. :)

I think more than anything that is just from being pregnant. I get tired some days and others not so much. Hang in there it will pass.

Thanks you two! I think you're right - the exhaustion is due to pregnancy and not to being celiac.

I honestly don't know how mom's do it! I can't imagine going through this with a child (or more) to look after.

P.S. -16 weeks today! Can't wait to start showing!

I'll tell ya how women do it again, even with small children. It's a phenomenon called" pregnancy amnesia", once they deliver they forget all the bad stuff and want to do it all over again! Congratulations, and pace yourself!~ ;)

I'm almost out of my second trimester and still waiting for the energy to come back. I've been gluten-free for nearly 5 years though so I'm pretty certain it's just the baby. The worst part is that I sleep so lousy now - constantly moving due to discomfort. I have a hard time staying asleep which makes it really tough to get enough - especially while working full time. That, combined with some other symptoms has prompted my dr. to put me on early disability. Everything with the baby is fine - they just want me to be fine as well....

The most important thing is to listen to what your body and your baby need. That will be the best guide to remaining healthy.

Good luck!

My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.

thank you both for the insights. i agree, im going to back off on dairy and try sucraid. thanks for the tip about protein powder, i will look for whey protein powder/drinks!   i don’t understand why my doctor refused to order it either. so i’ve decided i’m not going to her again, and i’m going to get a second opinion with a GI recommended to me by someone with celiac. unfortunately my first appointment isn’t until February 17th. do you think i should go gluten free now or wait until after i meet with the new doctor? i’m torn about what i should do, i dont know if she is going to want to repeat the endoscopy, and i know ill have to be eating gluten to have a positive biopsy. i could always do the gluten challenge on the other hand if she does want to repeat the biopsy.    thanks again, i appreciate the support here. i’ve learned a lot from these boards. i dont know anyone in real life with celiac.
