How Soon Can I Get "glutened" And Have Symptoms After Going gluten-free?

How soon can you get "glutened" after going gluten-free? (Assuming you didn't have obvious symptoms prior to going gluten-free). Obviously if you didn't eat gluten for one day and then ate it it would not be an issue. One week, One month? I've been gluten free for a little over 2 weeks and tonight I feel terrible - nauseous, bloated, burping, feel like I'm going to have D. Do not think I was "glutened" (though I ate food that I didn't personally prepare) but even if I were would I have developed symptoms already being gluten-free for such a short period of time?

Yes you could have been glutened even if you have only been gluten free for a couple weeks. When I did my doctor assisted elimination diet I started challenging foods in after 2 weeks. Gluten was the second thing I added back in and my reaction was severe. Often after a couple weeks gluten free your reactions may be even more severe than when you were eating gluten daily due in part to the sudden spike in the antibodies.

Thanks, Ravenwood. Man, I still feel awful. This is different from anything I've ever had before. I wonder if it was gluten or a virus. . .not fun. I never had GI symptoms prior to my "diagnosis" (getting a second opinion) except during my period so not eating gluten hasn't felt that beneficial to me. Hopefully it will help in the long run.

      Shingles is dormant and related to chicken pox when one has had in the past.Shingles comes out when stress is heightened.I had my 3rd Shingles in 2023.

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
