I will be visiting the Manhattan Beach, LA area mid August. Can anyone suggest any place that may be a safe place to eat? Thank You! Susie

well, no specific places. There are of course chains like PF Changs around. I live in LA, and while I don't eat out currently (diet more restricted than gluten-free), eating gluten-free is definitely possible at many places. LA is king of funky diets, Atkins, Zone, you name it, so people ordering a sandwich with no bread is commonplace (just be superclear that no bread can touch it, yadda yadda...).

You'll fit right in :)

Ha! :lol: How cool is that? I was just at the GIG conference in Chicago and I ate a few meals with a celiac and her parents from Manhattan Beach...I'll e-mail this thread to them.

Of course, there are always the chains to fall back on: Outback, TGIF, PF Changs, Arbys, etc., etc.

I'm not sure about Manhattan Beach, but here the message (I just copy/pasted it) someone on this board had for Huntington beach (which is pretty close to Manahattan Beach - California).

"While in downtown Huntington Beach, right on the corner of PCH and Main Street try Spark Wood Fire Grill. It's on the second floor overlooking the HB Pier and the beach. Ask your server to have Chris the head chef to come out. HIs wife is celiac and he is very aware of our unique eating needs. He cooked a dish especially for me and it was delicious!

He is in the process of writing a cookbook (he's a master chef) and getting a website. He has pancakes and a brownie recipes to die for! I found him quite by accident after I ordered the special of the day and was surprised when it arrived with wheat noodles artfully placed on top of my main dish. Pretty but deadly. Arby's nutritional information is here: Open Original Shared Link Pretty unhelpful, actually...doesn't show next to each product whether it contains gluten, but this is what I found from the SillyYaks Restaurant Guidebook (which I'm still sending to anyone who wants it). It had two columns: one to avoid, one to have...this was on the "have" side:

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified...

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
