Sinus Symptoms?

I wonder if sinus issues could at all indicate trouble with gluten?

I've been having sinus pressure/puffy eyes/congested head feeling for most mornings now for 5-7 years or so now. Now this does sound like it could be allergies, and I did try and go down that route and treat for that, but didn't help.

Also I've had IBS now for like 8 years (gas, bloating, constipation altering with loose), and fatigue, achyness, bladder issues and crap for awhile now too (several years) on and off, and who knows, it could be many different things, but for sure the only way to find out is get tested or stop gluten for a time and see how it goes. Do any of these symptoms (wondering especially about the persistent sinus stuff too on top of it) hint at gluten?

That sounds exactly how I started out! I was suffering chronic sinusitis but the doctors couldn't find a solid cause for it, and none of the medications seemed to help. If I didn't have a sinus infection I would be suffering from allergy-like symptoms. Then somehow I heard about it in connection to celiac. I had already suspected I had IBS (but was too embarrassed to go to the doctor about it - I did once and he just told me to go away and eat some prunes!) but the more I read about the celiac symptoms the more the light bulb went off in my head. So, low & behold I had the blood test and my suspicions were right. Now I've only been a couple of months gluten-free but my sinuses are clearer than ever :)

Yeah - in short, I've been wondering exactly the same thing. I went to a few doctors about all my problems & had tests, etc & long story short, I'm still looking for answers. The town I live now is horrible for allergies to start with, so that doesn't make things much easier.

ive had sinusitis off and on for the last 6 years... i think a number of factors are playing in to mine..

for you- it could be anything including gluten &/or dairy... or also ive read H.Pylori & Candida can do the same. an accupuncturist explained in simple terms to me that if im having a ton of stomach issues- that all my energy has gone to my stomach- leaving my sinus area open to anything.

all that being said... in the past-> dairy seems to give me nasal congestion.... and years ago- wheat gave me THEE WORST post nasal drip 24/7 :(

oh- ps- ive had puffy eyes for the last 5 years- chalked it up to sinusitis- but now im wondering- because it's one of the symptoms of a hypothyroid.

Hmm, interesting that others of you have had similar troubles.

I have tried for a week or so stopping all dairy just to see if it would help the sinus stuff, didn't do a thing. Also tried allergy med, that didn't do a thing either.

Have you ever considered Lyme disease? Not saying you do, but many of the symptoms are similar - Lyme can cause a number of different ailments, actually. It may be worth looking into, maybe not. One of the symptoms is persistent sinus symptoms - amongst d@mn near everything else under the sun

In my case, there's several factors that have slowly brought my attention around to Lyme. Considering how it all plays out, I'm thinking of getting thoroughly tested for it first before I do anything else.

we'll see how it goes - best wishes your way - this stuff isn't much fun, eh?

Hey Lizking,

Yeah it sure isn't fun. Sometimes I feel like a hypochondriac or something, but really it would just be nice to know what is behind all this crud to feel like a normal person.

I have heard lyme is similar. It seems like there is a group of diseases/syndromes that all share the same sort of symptoms. There is Lyme, thyroid issue, celiac, fibromyalgia (but I don't have the real bad aches that go with that), and probably more. Or even just simple things like anemia or a vitamin deficiency. Or maybe I am just nuts, lol!

Yes.  Now, if you hit your finger with a hammer once, wouldn't you do your best not to do it again?  You have identified a direct connection between gluten and pain.  Gluten is your hammer.  Now you have to decide if you need a medical diagnosis.  Some countries have aid benefits tgat you can get if you have the diagnosis, but you must continue eating a gluten-normal diet while pursuing the diagnosis. Otherwise the only reason to continue eating gluten is social. There are over 200 symptoms that could be a result of celiac disease.. Celiac Disease and Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity  both cause multiple vitamin and mineral deficiency.  Dealing with that should help your recovery, even while eating gluten.  Phosphatidyl Choline supplements can help your gut if digesting fats is a problem,  Consider that any medications you take could be causing some of the symptoms, aside from gluten.

Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

That's great news, you can do this.  Let us know how things go and don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions. Cristiana 😊
