Kame Rice Crackers

I just noticed this on the bottom of my Kame rice crackers - "this product may contain trace amounts of peanuts, soy, wheat..." and some other allergen I can't remember. Have Kame products always been cross contaminated or is this something new?

That warning has been on them for a least a year. I bought Hot-Kids Rice'ems Onion flavored crackers as they said "Gluten Free, Low Cholestrol" on the package. They were incredibly tasty. And I got sicker than I have been in over a year. I looked at the package again and it said product of Taiwan. Tried to find a website for them but couldn't. Noticed one ingredient was onion powder. Somewhere I read that when a spice is ground into a powder they often add wheat. I am not sure what ingredient did it, but I never want to be that sick again. And I am 100% positive it was the crackers.

So, at this point I am only eating crackers that are made in a gluten-free facility. I'm just too spooked by that last experience... :(

I bought kame rice crackers too and the noticed the same warning so I chucked 'em. Not worth it, unfortunately, they are tasty. <_<

I've had reactions to onion powder as well. Kraft puts out the "Back to Nature" brand which has two rice cracker options, sesame ginger and white cheddar. The white cheddar is great but I got sick off of it - my best guess is the onion powder. Although Kraft insists they always list a gluten source. I'm a newbie so maybe I missed something!

I do wish Kame would've made that warning more noticeable - it's half hidden under the seam. :ph34r:

      I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.

      Thanks @Scott Adams. Do you know if Kirkland Signature supplements share facility and production lines with other products containing gluten?  I'm worried that I'll react to this brand just like I did with other gluten-free labelled supplement brands.

      This is a really common area of confusion. Most natural cheeses (cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, Parmesan, brie, camembert, and most blue cheeses) are inherently gluten-free, and you’re right that the molds used today are typically grown on gluten-free media. The bigger risks tend to come from processed cheeses: shredded cheese (anti-caking agents), cheese spreads, beer-washed rinds, smoke-flavored cheeses, and anything with added seasonings or “natural flavors,” where cross-contact can happen. As for yeast, you’re also correct — yeast itself is gluten-free. The issue is the source: brewer’s yeast and yeast extracts can be derived from barley unless labeled gluten-free, while baker’s yeast is generally safe. When in doubt, sticking with whole, unprocessed cheeses and products specifically labeled gluten-free is the safest approach, especially if you’re highly sensitive.
