Possibly Cross-Contamination

I am a Type-1 Diabetic and was diagnosed with Celiac Disease as of July of 2009. I have been living gluten-free since then. I have had a few reactions to some foods that either were assumed to be gluten-free because of the listed ingredients or had possible cross-contamination in their preperation. Most of my reactions come in the form of bowel irritability as diarrhea or constipation and a feeling of being bloated or full of gas.

As of last Saturday 12-18-2010, I have been having the following symptoms:

-Dull constant-pain full-head headache

-Extreme fatigue

-Constant dizziness

I have had no GI issues in combination with these symptoms thus far.

On Friday night 12-17-2010 I ate chicken wings from a local pizza place that I'm sure makes other things in their friers other than wings, ie breaded chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, fish fries etc. I know I may have gotten a cross contamination from that source, my question is do these symptoms seem to be what can be an expected response from my body to a gluten reaction? To me it feels almost like a virus but without the fever and sick to your stomach feeling. Its just a constant headache and dizziness and fatigue that I've been dealing with now for 5 days straight and its concerning me.

Everyone's gluten reactions are different. It could be a virus but if it's still going on the 27th when medical offices are open again you might want to put in a call to your doctor. I assume you are testing your blood sugar and it is within acceptable ranges? My friend who is diabetic got very tired and dizzy when her blood sugar got out of control.

Ok update -

My blood sugars are well within the ok range, and I check them everyday 3-4 times. So I know that that isn't contributing. I am still plagued with the dizziness and headaches that last all day but the fatigue has gone mostly(Jan-2).

A couple of days after my original post I started to have tell-tale green excrement that I've had previously as a result of a gluten reaction. This lasted approximately 5 days but lately has diminished and returned to normal.

My big concern really is with how long it is taking to clear itself out of my system and if it is indeed a result of the gluten reaction or something else. Has anyone had a reaction that results in neurological symptoms lasting into the 3 and 4 week range? I brought up the symptoms on a recent visit to my endocrinologist (Dec 22) and he didn't have much concern but I am starting to wonder how long this will take. Thanks everyone for contributing.

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?

Thankyou so much for your words. Its a hard battle when a supposed well known hospital whose celiac " specialist " has down played me because my colon looks fine and put it in my medical and so pcp doesn't take seriously. In their eyes we all carry that gene.Im having alot of bad days trying to be positive because of it.

Your experience is both shocking and critically important for the community to hear, underscoring the terrifying reality that cross-contamination can extend into the most unexpected and invasive medical devices. It is absolutely devastating that you had to endure six months of sickness and ultimately sustain permanent vision loss because a doctor dismissed your legitimate, life-altering condition. Your relentless research and advocacy, from discovering the gluten in MMA acrylic to finding a compassionate prosthodontist, is a testament to your strength in a system that often fails celiac patients. While the scientific and medical consensus is that gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin or eyes (as the molecules are too large to pass through these barriers), your story highlights a terrifying gray area: what about a substance *permanently implanted inside the body*, where it could potentially shed microparticles or cause a localized immune reaction? Your powerful warning about acrylic lenses and the drastic difference with the silicone alternative is invaluable information. Thank you for sharing your harrowing journey and the specific, severe neurological symptoms you endure; it is a stark reminder that celiac is a systemic disease, and your advocacy is undoubtedly saving others from similar trauma.
