Hello - My Son Has Celiac

I have been watching this forum for a while now. I have also been visiting Celiac.com and many, many other Celiac related sites for several years, but never posted. Today I decided to. My Son was diagnosed with Celiac when he was 1 year old. He is now 14 and is doing great. It has been a challenge with school lunches and birthday parties etc, all these years. However, Taylor (my son), has adapted very well, and all of his friends understand his condition and don't think anything of it. The school works with us, and heats his lunch up for him everyday, to allow him to have a hot lunch. I worry however, that he will develop other conditions as a result of Celiac disease, like Cancer or Diabetes. I love my boy so much... Should he be looked at, internally, by the Doctor, annually to be sure nothing is going on, or every few years or so...?

If he's been on a gluten-free diet and continues to be on that diet, his risk of developing such conditions is no greater than the general population. And if he was diagnosed at one-year-old, then there's basically nothing that could have developed in that timeframe. The increased cancer risk is most dangerous for celiacs who have gone 20 or 30 yrs. without a diganosis, not 1, 3, or 5.

Thanks.... I should have my son Taylor register on this forum... You seem to be very well educated in Celiac Disease.. The Doctor looks at him and can't believe that he is a Celiac Patient.. He seems very healthy. He races motocross as well, which keeps him in shape...

nice to "meet" you. My daughter was diagnosed at 3, she is 5 now and the Dr.'s can't believe how healthy she is. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 34, so now at 36 I'm still having problems from going so long without a diagnosis. I'd be interested to know just how you've coped all these years with school, b-day parties and friends...
