Absorption Issues?

So I've been diagnosed with celiac for 3 years now & have been completely gluten free for about 2.5 years. I've had 3 endoscopies to see what's going on in my intestines & the last one showed that my villi are still blunted (I've had bloodwork done and the antibody level is in the normal range indicating that I am sticking to my gluten free diet). Obviously this causes serious issues but my doctor doesn't really make it to be a big deal. He just tells me it will take time to heal. I'm ok with that except that my body is not absorbing important nutrients. I've seen several people recommend to other people that are having the same issue to take vitamin supplements. However how does that change anything? My body won't absorb them, so why bother. I mean if my body isn't absorbing the nutrients from the food I eat, why would it absorb a straight vitamin. That makes no sense to me. I suffer from being lethargic & depressed, and I'm very tired of feeling this way. What on earth can I do?

I am kind of surprised this isn't talked about more often or that no one wants to know this as well.

Hello, and welcome to the board.

Actually, we discuss this quite a lot here, because if you have a damaged gut you are not absorbing things properly, the definition of celiac disease. There are ways of overcoming this, mainly ways of bypassing the digestive system. Injections are routinely given for B12 and iron, or you can take the sublingual B12 that dissolve under the tongue. Prescription strength Vit.D seems to work for most people (50,000 IU).

But start with repairing the gut first and foremost. Have you been taking probiotics and/or digestive enzymes to help your digestion? Have you tried L-Glutamine to heal the gut? There are lots of things we can do to help things along, starting with having your nutrient (vitamin and mineral/electrolyte) levels testing to find out what you need to supplement, and then using products to promote healing in the gut. If your doctor is not hep to these things or will not cooperate in ordering the tests it might be time to find another one. This is all basic stuff in recovery from celiac/gluten poisoning. Nutarient deficiencies can leave you very tired and lethargic; so can hypothyroidism, and your thryoid should be checked too.

Let us know how you have been heallng.

yes i agree with mushroom- that's why many of us have done B12 shots or sublinguals.. Because the stomach would probably not absorb it well enough.

Groovinkc - I had the same problem. It was extremely frustrating. But I went with a liquid vitamin making sure that it had the 90 essential nutrients and my absorption problem cleared up. You may want to check into something like that.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
