Genetic Inheritance Of Cd

Emma's Mom Rookie

Hello there! I am brand new to this board and I have a quick question. I'm on information overload right now as I suspect that my DD has celiac disease.

I know that celiac disease is genetically linked...so my question is - if my DD has celiac disease, doesn't that mean that I must have celiac disease as well (I know genetics isn't always that simple)...even though it may not have manifested itself (or have been triggered) yet? Further...if I have celiac disease, doesn't this mean that one of my parents must have had celiac disease (I suspect my mother and sister both have it with the more reading I do). The only person I know that has confirmed celiac disease is my maternal grandmother at this point.

Any genetic experts out there :) Thanks!

No, if you have it neither one of your parents have to have it. They may have the gene for it but not have it activated or they could indeed have it but nothing is for sure.

It does run in families but not everyone gets it. If you have a relative with it then you should be tested though

Getting your family to go get tested is a bit harder if they are not having symptoms.

Coming from a divorced family - both my parents claim "it's not from my side". I finally got my mother to at least do a blood test. It came back negative, I tried to explain to her that it still does not mean she is free and clear. It just means that if she does have it that it isn't active. I wish a more difinative test could be developed. I had most of the symptoms all my life, but it was after a bad horseback riding accident that landed me in the hospital a little over two years ago that they symptoms when crazy.

I know I recieved the Thyroid issues from my Dad's side, The acid reflux from both sides and unfortuneatly both sides of the family have had things that could be linked to Celiac.

Good luck.

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
