Knowledgable Gi Doctor In Mississauga, Ontario Area?

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone who lives in or around the Mississauga, Ontario area knows a good Gastroenterologist who has much experience in celiac disease. I just did my blood tests today and am just waiting for the results. I am worried that they will come back negative and I will be back to square one about what's wrong with me, but I would like to definitely get the stomach biopsy done and I'm thinking that going to a GI doc that has a lot of knowledge about celiac disease would be more willing to do something like that than one who might not know much about celiac yet and who may dismiss my request, therefore wasting my time and energy of getting an appointment with him/her in the first place. Does anyone with celiac disease or gluten intolerance have a GREAT gastroenterologist that they are seeing currently in the Mississauga, Ontario area??

I have a guy in Burlington that basically I didn't see until my endoscopy and then I got the results one month later and he said "yup, it's celiac. Gluten free is the only way to go. Not much more I can do for you unless you don't get better". What the HECK? I got a better response from the rheumatologist that I saw as recommended by the neurologist that I saw (lots of specialists in the last year!) and he recommended the bone density scan which my GP already ordered and it was normal. My GI had never ever seen a celiac without stomach symptoms, let alone the crazy neurological symptoms that I had and furthermore, he was not that interested. Not that I am bitter :)

Sorry I am not more help! I think these folks are few and far between! I am lucky that my GP is fabulous and seems to be on it.

Sorry, not much help. My son went to a pediatric GI in Toronto Dr. Kovac and she was awesome. When my husband had his colonoscopy at the Barrie Endoscopy clinic, the docotor was very knowledgable, I thought. If our blood work comes back positive we will be going there for a scope. I don't have the paperwork near me so I don't know what his name is off hand. If you are interested in coming a little north I could find out for you.

adab8ca... yeah, the more i read posts, the more i'm realizing there are a lot of docs not very interested in or educated about celiac disease... now as a GI specialist, isn't is their JOB to know everything they can about their specialty, especially since they get paid very handsomely for what they do?? *sigh*

hockeymomofceliacchild... I might be willing to go up to Barrie, so i wouldn't mind having the name of that doc at the Barrie Endoscopy Clinic... thanx. :o)

Jenny my husband isn't sure where his paperwork is but if you look up Barrie Endoscopy Clinic on Quarry Ridge Road (right next to the Barrie hospital) you could probably get some info. If I find it in the mean time I'll let you know. Good luck with this. :)

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified...

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
