My mom asked me to look for gluten-free cosmetics for her this week. It's been a frustrating search until today. I thought I would share the fruits of my search!

Neutrogena...has tons of gluten-free free products and customer service is willing to send it to you as an Excel file. It was updated on Jan. 15 2004. The list includes lipstick for those who have had a hard time finding something.

Mary Kay....I am meeting with a MK rep next week who has a list of all the ingredients in their products. We'll go over it with a list of "no-no" ingredients and see what we come up with. I'll let you know and include the MK rep's contact info too. She's done a lot of the leg work, so I figure she deserves the business.

Shaklee.....Here's their email reply to my request. It's a little odd in that it lists what is NOT gluten free in their entire line. They also sound very responsible about labeling and claiming a product as gluten free. Read it and you'll see what I mean.....

Products containing gluten

Celiac disease is a disorder caused by the inability to tolerate gluten,

the protein component in wheat, oats, barley, and rye. The following

list is provided based on ingredients that contain gluten. Although

products not listed are likely to be gluten-free, we do not make that

guarantee, because we do not test for the presence of gluten.

While there are products on the market claiming to be "gluten-free,"

there is no legal standard for such labeling, and testing for the

presence of gluten is not required to make the gluten-free claim.

Marketers of gluten-free products may base the claim on the presumption

that, since ingredients in the product do not contain gluten, the

product is gluten-free. However, consumers sensitive to gluten should be

mindful that "gluten-free" products made in equipment and/or facilities

that also make gluten-containing products can contain gluten through

cross contamination. Therefore, people who are severely sensitive to

gluten should confirm that so-called "gluten-free" products are

substantiated by tests showing that gluten is not present in the

product.

Neutrogena Gluten Free (Wheat Free)

Be careful -- the Neutrogena list is only a wheat free list, not a gluten-free list. I discovered this earlier this fall after having conversations with one customer rep who told me that a number of products were gluten free, only to be told by a rep the next day that the products have only been determined to be wheat free. Neutrogena for years has been using the term "gluten free" to label products that are free from wheat, but had not determined whether they are free from oats, barley, and rye as well. They are now in the process of testing or investigating various products. The ones that are free from all gluten will be labeled specifically in their database as being free from wheat, rye, barley and oats. But, you have to ask the rep specifically whether the product is listed as being free from wheat only, or if it is also listed as being free from barley, rye and oats. I expressed my astonishment to the supervisor that Neutrogena continues to use the misleading term of "gluten free" when they really mean "wheat free" but they didn't seem to care.
