Newbie Test Question

Hi :)

I am a newbie here with a test question. My preschooler son has been gluten free for almost 2 years. His GI doc ran some tests, however, I am not sure if the results are meaningful, since he is 100% gluten-free. His tissue transglutaminase IGA came back negative, his antigliadin antibody IGA came back negative, but his antigliadin antibody IGG came back positive (58). What I think I am understanding is that one could get false negatives from not having gluten in the system, however, could one get a false positive? Could one have a positive antigliadian IGG and not have celiac disease?

He is going to be scoped in a couple of months, so we will do the biopsy then. I was just curious to see what these results could mean...

Thanks for your help!!

Nicole

The tests are worthless since he has been gluten free. They would not be accurate at all. When you are gluten free thats how they test your compliance so being gluten free it should be negative....thats why in initial testing it is so important to keep eating gluten.

Why was he put on the gluten free diet?

Thanks for your quick response!

My son got a PDD/autism dx a couple of years ago. Dietary intervention (gluten & casein free) has been a significant piece of the puzzle for us. Nowadays, he is pretty much a normal child from a behavioral stdpt, however, we still struggle with many health issues. GI issues being one of them. We are not in a place right now where we would want to "challenge" gluten, thus the bloodwork was done while being off of gluten.

So the one positive IGG test really does not mean anything either?

Thanks again--

Nicole

The IgG is not a very specific test. This test can't be factored in by itself for a diagnosis because out of all the tests that has the highest chance of being wrong.

With him being gluten free for 2 years though..the testing really isn't valid.

Autism has been said to be connected with celiac and they do seem to benefit from the diet so I would say definitely keep him on it.

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
