Need A Chinese Dish

My brother just got engaged to a wonderful woman and I'm really happy for them both. She is Chinese and her family tends to have many meals out at Chinese restaurants (they come in from out of town pretty often) and there will be parties where they rent out a restaurant for the happy couple.

It would be great if I could think up one dish that I could eat or have easily modified to eat so I'm not looking too odd at these events. But all I can think of is steamed rice and steamed veggies. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of something else I could request? I haven't tried to eat Chinese since I went gluten free last October so I haven't really been able to come up with any ideas myself.

On the one hand it seems like this should be easy, being that her family is Chinese - they can help request a special dish for me. But on the other hand, this might not be possible because they will be preoccupied with events, etc. I have talked previously about this with my brother's fiancée and she has told me not to expect much from the restaurants as, in her experience, most Chinese restaurants don't care too much about peoples dietary limitations.

Anyway, along with gluten, I can't have shellfish, spicy peppers, bell peppers, or tomatoes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Stephanie

Is there a PF Changs near you? They have a gluten-free menu that is pretty comprehensive :) I went there last week with my boyfriend and had moo goo gai pan - it was tasty, but I don't know if they had to make special changes to it for it to be gluten free. Hmm...

There is a place near us called "Rumbi's Island Grill" where they do rice/noodles bowls and I usually order a bowl of brown rice with the vegetables steamed, and then ask that they cook my chicken on foil (so that it wont touch the contaminated grill) - then I take my own teriyaki sauce :) It's all good ;) At first it seemed like a pain in the butt with all the special directions, but it is sooooo tasty! Let me know if you need the teriyaki recipe :) (I got it from Tarnalberry & tweaked it a little.) Actually, since you don't have a sesame allergy - there is a gluten-free teriyaki sauce that I've found in a couple health food stores that you could use. I don't remember the name of it right now - but you could look for one at your health food store :)

Good luck!

you could try carrying your own soy sauce, Braggs Amino acids or Sweet and Sour Sauce and ask them to cook your veggies and plain meat in a clean pan with your sauce... Like beef or chicken w/ broccoli

I usually just get steamed vegetables and rice and put my own soy sauce on it.

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—
