Has anyone gone back on gluten after being gluten-free, and actually have the bloodwork or biopsy come back positive? Also, how long did you eat the gluten for? Just wondering if it will actually make a difference on the tests.

I was gluten free for five months proir to my three month gluten challenge but I do not become obviously ill eating gluten so it was simple (and enjoyable!) for me. I ate gluten for 14 weeks and the biopsies were unfortunately positive. The amount of time gluten is ingested makes a HUGE difference on the tests. Several days/weeks after being gluten free will likely not show enough damage (it may be easier to miss). Keep in mind that in the US and Canada only 40% of biopsies are done correctly so there is a very high rate of false negatives. Make sure you request 8-11 biopsies, not the usual 3-5. That is, if you are doing the challenge! :)

Only one person? Does that mean everyone else was still negative, or that you didn't bother with adding the gluten back?

Thank you for your reply. I'm surprised that you have no gut symptoms but had villi damage. I was under the impression no gut symptoms means that your leaning toward gluten intolerance. My child has no gut symptoms. So your experience is saying he can still have the damage?

There are others on this board who are in the same boat as me. Actually, according to many studies and celiac specialists about half of those diagnosed with celiac disease have no gut symptoms! My villi were flattened in all the biopsies. My doctors believe I likely have had it for many years according to the extent of the damage. My bloodwork was positive and both my family doctor and I were shocked (no anemia, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies). I thought there had to be a mistake (denial) until my biopsy results came back. It is actually more difficult (in ways) for those of us without obvious symptoms as we do not know whether we have been accidentally exposed to gluten or not. I am strict as can be possible but have no idea whether I have been glutened.

I really hope your child does not have damage but sadly it is definitely possible.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.
