Absolutely Baffled And Need Help

This is the deal. My daughter is completley gluten free. Most recently she suffered from allergies and had cluster shots. On third shot in series began to feel dizzy which has now been a week ago. Short story is she is still dizzy 24/7. She's had two steriods to counteract. They thought she might be dehydrated but she is not, urine is clear outside of docs office. Blood work shows WBC of 13K and quite elevated absolute monocytes and neutrophils. Only had high WBC with a parasitic infection a number of years ago, every other one normal WBC. Doctor is baffled. Blood pressure is not low, normal temp. Only other thing is AIC was 5.4 and in office doctor measured blood glucose 161 and then on labs sent out of office at same doc visit show 88. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Her MCHC was very slightly low, and other RBC numbers normal.

Two steroid shots?

I had two steroid shots. First one was like someone slipped me something - whacked out for about 5 hours. Second one left me screwed up for days. And that was just the obvious effect.

My blood work was messed up, can't remember exactly the weird combination of "off" but my ND asked if I was on steroids - this was 3 months after the shots.

I also developed adrenal issues, hypoglycemia, sensory malfunctions, and new food sensitivities. In short, the steroids really really screwed things up.

One thing I noticed was after a glutening or ingesting chemical-laden foods, I'd get steroid flashbacks. I went gluten-free after the steroids (long story - DH). It's been almost a year since the first steroid shot and I've noticed my neuro issues are finally lessening when I eat those foods (mostly by accident, definitely gluten by accident).

So, the steroids may not have caused the original problem and may in fact resolved it but they can have some really nasty after-effects. And sometimes, steroids can be worse than the original issue (I still can't decide if a rash or a total body breakdown was worse...seriously).

Steroids take a big toll on the adrenals and liver.

Another thing - did they check her vitamin and iron (complete panel)?

My mchc was off and that was part of my anemia. Anemia can throw off a few blood tests. Pre-diabetes can also.

BUT, if the tests were run after the steroids it could be the steroids affecting her system and throwing off the tests.

She's had many CBC's and has had many steroids over the years for headaches and sinus issues but only once had an elevated WBC when she had RMSF. A sinus infection requiring surgery never raised the WBC. Never have been dizzy from steroids and we had two oral doses several days later after lightheaded feeling.

Here's one bit about WBC and steroids:Open Original Shared Link

And another about why WBC can be elevated: Open Original Shared Link

I'll paraphrase what doctors have told me about CBC's - several things can cause variations and when in doubt test again.

So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—
