Hi everyone this is my first post.

My name is Katie and I live in Ontario Canada. I am 45 years old and have been having some stomach issues. Last year I was not well at all 30 pounds heavier and just not myself. I had some pain and they did an Ultra Sound and my liver was quite enlarged. I gave up all aspartame and splenda and started walking and no drinking and 3 months later I had another Ultra Sound. Everything was normal and there was not even any fatty liver. I kept having pain all year and in my mind thought it was my liver. I finally saw the Dr again. My blood pressure is fantastic, weightloss and good liver and real stomach problems. Pain above the belly button and it moved grumbly intestines, constaption tooo OMG I can't leave the bathroom. The pain was very worriesome. My Dr thinks it is Celiac or wheat intolerance. I had the blood test today which cost me $120 dollars and tomorrow is day one of my new eating. We eat pretty well so I am not too worried (only when we travel) we had been in Mexico for 2 weeks at Christmas and my stomach was much better ( then I thought OH most of what I ate was CORN). I am interested in seeing if the food works. I am the type of person who just does what they have to. If this helps I will be so excited.

I will keep you all posted.

Great web site

Katie

Welcome to the forum, Katie. I hope you are well on your way to getting your mystery GI symptoms diagnosed. You are lucky to have a doctor who thought of testing for celiac. Is he your GP, and is he going to give you a diagnosis if your results are positive? Just a warning that some doctors will want to refer a positive result to a GI for him to do an endoscopy with biopsy to confirm the diagnosis, and for that result to be a true result you need to be still eating gluten until the test is done, otherwise you may get a negative scope (yes, the gut can start to heal that quickly)., So if I were you I would continue eating gluten until then, or call your doctor's office and ask him the question. Many doctors are not aware that you have to continue eating gluten up until the time of the scope and don't let anyone tell you that it doesn't matter, because it does.

Best wishes on getting your problems diagnosed. :)

Good luck!! I just had my blood tests done yesterday. I'm waiting to get a call back.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes the Dr is my GP she is pretty thorough. She said to take the blood test and then start the diet. It will take 4 weeks for me to get the test back! I am not convinced this is going to be the answer but I am willing to give it a try!

Today is day 4 and I now have a headache which I am assuming is just the detoxing process.

My stomach does not seem to be that much better yet.

Detoxing/withdrawal is perfectly normal and usually lasts for a couple of weeks at least. Not to be alarmed. Healing is going to take a while, so is proper digestion. :)

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
