Has Anyone Gained Weight Without Gaining Size Or Muscle?

I'm assuming this is related to the Celiac disease because it all started when I got really sick, but my doctors have been essentially useless.

I'm a fairly skinny 19 year old girl. I was just recently diagnosed but I've probably been dealing with Celiac since infancy. I'm tall - 5'8 - and I wear either a size 4 or a 6, sometimes an 8 (my measurements are 36 - 28 - 36) and I normally weigh about 145 lbs. Recently I've been weighing in at about 165 lbs but I haven't gained any size or muscle. The doctors are kind of ignoring it but it's really bothering me, I guess. 165 is very, very heavy for me. My PCP theorized that it could be built up fecal matter.

Has this happened to anyone else? It's driving me bananas.

Hasn't happened to me. Wish I could borrow some of those extra pounds, LOL. Ain't been able to get up to a normal healthy weight.

The only thing I can think of is bone density. I agree that 165 pounds is too much for your height and frame, unless you're a body builder or doing a lot of strength training or some such.

Perhaps your body is finally able to do something it has been trying to do for a long time, but it hasn't adjusted to the new circumstances yet. Like when you reach for a bottle that you think is full, but it's almost empty, so you use too much force and your arm goes way up too high.

Maybe your body simply needs time to adjust. How long have you been gluten-free?

No, at 5'-8", 165# isn't too much, it depends upon your build.

I'm gaining weight :blink: but losing size because I'm gaining muscle, I gain it relatively easily if I work out, and I'm wide in the shoulder and hip, I'm never one of those "small" sizes even if I were to be thin. Last summer I told the sales clerk at REI I needed a men's lightweight sun- block shirt because of this, and she said, (this cracked me up) "oh, you have kayaker's arms, you want one of these." It's true, I do. But it's just the genetic luck of the draw. I couldn't believe it when I last weighed myself, I was sort of horrified, but I'm a lot fitter, so it's a trade off. Honestly you would never guess how many freaking vegetables, nuts, and fruits I eat. And I cut back on my bread making, and I don't eat cereal. Apparently this is a side effect of aging and hormone change. 2 years ago I tried cutting way, way back on the amount of food I ate, and absolutely nothing happened other than I got very tired, a lot, and sort of puffy <_< . Now, if I get glutened mildly, I will retain fluid, that is one of the first hints that something cross contaminated has breached the hull.

I've been gluten free for about 2 months now, but the first notice of this was at the appointment when I was first diagnosed.

I know my BMI is still considered normal, it's just that I have a relatively small frame. I'm a busy student so I'm not active enough to have a dense muscular frame. I'm sure I have some fluid retention, but that seems to be a lot of extra weight that I'm not used to having.

I cut out the rice because it was affecting my stomach at the time ... not necessarily dermatitis herpetiformis. It was Tilda Basmati Rice, sometimes wholegrain rice. I was willing to do whatever it took to heal. Too much fiber also disagrees with me as I have UC.

But you didn't answer my question. When you consume gluten, is there an identifiable reaction within a short period of time, say a few hours?

You can still have celiac disease with negative blood test results, although it's not very common:  Clinical and genetic profile of patients with seronegative coeliac disease: the natural history and response to gluten-free diet: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5606118/  Seronegative Celiac Disease - A Challenging Case: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9441776/  Enteropathies with villous atrophy but negative coeliac serology in adults: current issues: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34764141/

I am only wondering why you would need to cut out rice? I've never heard of rice being any issue in those with DH.

My mother has celiac disease and was diagnosed with Afib around 8 months ago. She's 81 and around 2 months ago had ablation therapy done, which is a very common procedure to treat this, and has been out of Afib 95% of the time since then. Apparently the full effects of this treatment don't kick in for 90 days, so the doctors expect her recovery to possibly reach 100%. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor.
