For Those With Constipated Kids-How Long To See Improvement?

DD is on day 8 of a gluten free diet. SO far I have seen a great improvement in her behavior. Far fewer tantrums and when she does have them they are of a lesser intensity than before. I have not seen a difference in her constipation however and am starting to wonder if gluten is our problem. Can anyone share how long it took your child's constipation to improve. Thanks!

DS is 18 months and has been gluten free for 4 months now. He is still constipated. His GI said it wasn't the gluten causing it, but can't tell me what is. He takes 1 tsp of Miralax every morning and has a bm everyday. Lately he has been going 4-5 days with no bm, but his other symptoms have been coming back so I think he's getting cross contaminated at my mom's house. :(

Our GI, a celiac expert, said constipation takes the longest to go away on a gluten-free diet, up to 6 mos at least. It's been 5 mos for us and whenever I try to decrease my daughter's Miralax, her constipation returns. Our GI also said that her constipation could be unrelated to her celiac. Not very encouraging for us. But wanted you not to worry if you haven't seen any changes in that department after 8 days.

thank you that helps a lot. 6 months is a long time. Did your doc say why it takes so long to improve? Did he give you a plan for how and when to reduce the miralax?

My daughters constipation got better after 2 weeks but only with the removal of dairy. Seems like whenever I give her dairy she gets constipated. Not sure if she will ever be able to have dairy. Did you remove dairy? Or only gluten?

my 2 year old was horribly constipated since 10 months.  We have been doing miralax every day but are so tired of having to give it to her. the new ped said, let's find out why she needs this.... we pulled both gluten and cow dairy and stopped the miralax.  Within 2 days, she is going everyday normally with no straining, no tears, :(  and seems so much happier. So, since we stopped both at the same time, we aren't sure which is the culprit.  But, we are also going through a speech delay issue with her (25 mos and very few words), so we are wondering if the constipation and the food allergies/intolerance were related.   I have heard both dairy and gluten could cause constipation and delay in some children--- so that's where we are today on day 10!   Constipation seems to be better and now we just have to see if it changes her development on talking.   Any advice here from anyone?

These posters haven't been on for 2 years.  You have a thread https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/110684-food-allergies-and-speech-delay-in-toddlers/

That might be a good place for you to keep all your info and questions and answers.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
