ARCHIVED Question About Breastfeeding And Honey
maddycat replied to miasmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've never heard that the mom shouldn't eat honey, only babies under 1 year should not eat it. I would check with another lactation consultant to confirm. I ate honey when I was nursing my son all the time. -
ARCHIVED 6 Weeks Pregnant- 2 Questions...
maddycat replied to maddycat's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Congrats on your pregnancy Kprince! Your progesterone level seems fine. My level was low at 12 so they put me on the supplement. It doesn't have anything to do with having celiac. When I was pregnant with my son my level was at 17 and I didn't need any supplementing. Have a happy and healthy 9mos!! Marcia -
Hi- I am about 6 weeks pregnant and things are going pretty well so far! I have been gluten free for almost 2 years so I'm hoping the celiac disease doesn't cause any issues with this pregnancy. I have two questions- 1) My poop seems to be different the last two weeks. It has been more green and has pieces of undigested food in it (I can recognize...

ARCHIVED Best Websites To Purchase Food That's Hard To Find In Stores
maddycat replied to Dolcenotte's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have had luck at gluten free trading company- they have a dot com shopping site. Just do a search for it, it should come up right away- they are a retail store based in Milwaukee WI. Their shipping rates are reasonable and they have a lot of stock. Good luck! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Places In Minneapolis, Mn?
maddycat posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Any gluten free restaurants in the Minneapolis area? I will be in the area for a few days while my husband is there on a work trip. I will be staying downtown at the Hilton in June with my 2 year old son and husband so we are looking for some family friendly places to go. Help please...the hotel doesn't even have refrigerators in the rooms, I have... -
ARCHIVED What Can I Make With Steel Cut Oats?
maddycat posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just bought a bag of Bob's Red Mill gluten-free steel cut oats. I have never had them before (I've only baked/cooked with rolled oats). What can I make with them other than basic hot cereal? Can they be used for cookies? Thanks, Marcia -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Help Me With My Lab Results?
maddycat replied to Nan2N's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree with PP's that it looks like it is Celiac Disease based on your serological test results. I would think your GI dr. knows more about Celiac disease than your GP- so I would trust his diagnosis more. My GP has only seen one other case of celiac disease other than me in recent years so I definitely know more about it than she does! Have you had... -
ARCHIVED Latortilla Facctory Wraps
maddycat replied to maddycat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Did you try the ivory teff or dark teff variety? I had the ivory teff and thought they were very mild tasting, really let the flavors of the filling shine through. I love corn too, for tacos, but they just don't hold up for burritos and they are too small. -

ARCHIVED Latortilla Facctory Wraps
maddycat replied to maddycat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got them at a grocery store (it is not a store that I normally shop at, and they only have a very small gluten free section so it was surprising to see something that I had not seen elsewhere). They are called Smart and Delicious Wraps-Gluten Free/Wheat Free, Ivory Teff. The basic ingredient list includes: Water, tapioca flour, whole grain ivory teff... -
ARCHIVED Latortilla Facctory Wraps
maddycat posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just had my first burrito in almost 2 years and I'm in heaven! These wraps are great! I've tried the brown rice ones before and, blech, they were not to my liking. The LaTortilla Factory ones were 'da bomb'! I felt like I was really eating a burrito- it stayed together, did not crack at all and was pretty tasty! -
ARCHIVED Outback Steakhouse, Concord, Nh
maddycat replied to Mistilyn's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Hmmm, I called my local restaurant and had not heard anything about gluten free bread. I wrote to the company about it and here is my email and the response I got- Comments: I heard that at your Concord, NH Outback Steakhouse location you now offer gluten free buns and bread. I called the location nearest me in Madison, WI and the manager said... -

ARCHIVED Trader Joe's
maddycat replied to MissySue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes! They have some great gluten free items. I love their gluten free granola and their gluten-free banana waffles (and they are cheaper than Van's waffles and you get 8 per box, not 6). Also, I found that their frozen cheese tamales are gluten free (not sure if they are on their printout) but they are great- the best frozen tamales I've ever had! -
I just found a list of products that are gluten free by McCain- the have lots of great convienent frozen potato products (smiles, tater tots, mini potato pancakes, etc). McCain gluten free list Also Hormel has a good list- lots of things you wouldn't expect (This included JennyO Turkey Store and Stagg Chili items too). Hormel gluten free list ...

ARCHIVED Fertility, Menstrual Cycle, Possible Thyroid Issue?
maddycat posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My husband and I aren't actively trying to conceive right now, but not preventing either. I have been "loosely" charting my cycles for the past year. I have a two year old son and I got my first post partum menstruation about a year ago (I nursed him until December of 07). I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease after my son was born. In the last few months... -
On tonight's episode of The Late Show, the announcer said during the introduction "...now wheat and gluten free...David Letterman" right before Dave's entrance. Anyone have any thoughts on this...was it just a joke. I was hoping he would comment on it during the monologue, but no, he didn't. Perplexed! (I googled David Letterman gluten free and...

ARCHIVED Breastfeeding And Needing Help
maddycat replied to KimmyJ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was in the exact same situation as you... I was diagnosed 4 months after having my first son. I was breastfeeding full time. I too lost some weight and was not sure if it was from nursing or changing to the gluten free diet (I was 10# less than my pre-preg weight at 10 months post partum). My son thrived on breast milk and we finally weaned at 20 months... -
ARCHIVED Namaste Muffin Mix- Add Ins
maddycat replied to Glutenfreefamily's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I know this is getting off topic a bit-- but I have tried the Namaste muffin mix and didn't find it to be that great (although I love their spice cake and chocolate cake mixes)- I think it is really bland and a bit grainy on it's own. I've tried adding fruit juice instead of water, adding fruit, cinnamon, sugar topping, etc. and still find it to be bland... -

ARCHIVED Diet Compliance Re-check With Dr.
maddycat posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am meeting with my dr. later this week to test for diet compliance, etc. I was diagnosed in August of '06 and have not been back to my dr yet- this is my first time. What tests do they need to run to check things out and make sure I am doing well on the diet? Blood tests for antibodies, vitamin deficiency checks? Please tell me which ones specifically... -
ARCHIVED Is My Blood Test - Questionable?
maddycat replied to chatycady's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Chatycady- I am in the same boat as you- I had only bloodowork done 1 1/2 years ago and my results came back in the equivocal range too. At the time my GI told me to follow a strict diet for the rest of my life, etc. I did not have a biopsy done as I started eating gluten-free right after the blood test. I also didn't have the TTG test, only anti-giladin... -
Thanks for the link. Do you recommend this so that it doesn't go on my record- for future insurance problems- if I did have a proper diagnosis? If I do it through my dr, does insurance generally cover gene testing, or not?

Background: I was 'diagnosed' with celiac in August of 2006. Some of the dr's I saw knew what it was, some knew a bit more, but alas, my health plan is an HMO, so I didn't expect too much! My IGG and IGA came back slightly elevated in the equivocal range (did not have a "full panel" of blood work done and did not know that I should have until too late)...
