  1. I have a bread machine that I have used a few times, but have yet to find a bread that I really like. I'm not a fan of gluten-free Pantry's Sandwich Bread- it comes out too doughy and wet for me and the taste was just ok. I tried making Bob's Red Mill mix and love the texture but don't like the beany taste. Is there something I can add to mask the...
  2. I found that the easiest way to try out some new flour blends and to start baking from "scratch" for me, was to get a few gluten free cook books. The two that I have used and like are Betty Hagman's, The Gluten Free Gourmet Cooks Comfort Foods and Jules E. D. Shephard's, Nearly Normal Cooking for Gluten Free Eating. Each of the books has their own "flour...
  3. Anyone gone to the Original Pancake house and found any gluten free options? I did a search online and found that two of their locations in Oregon are test marketing a gluten free pancake but the restaurant near me (in Wisconsin) is not. We are having a work lunch there next week and am hoping there is something I can eat...perhaps eggs or an omelette...
  4. Rice crackers (rice thins, nut thins, all the same type of thing) are very good too, different than what you are used to (gluten crackers) but very good. In fact when I first went gluten free I thought these were good because it was something different--not trying to replace a regular cracker with something that tasted inferior. They hold up well when topped...
  5. There are two beers that Sprecher is offering that are gluten free- Mbege and Shakparo Ale. The description on the Shakparo sounds interesting- made with bananas and unfiltered. I live in Madison, WI so I should be able to find them in my area (Sprecher is in Milwaukee, WI). I'll let you all know when I find them, how they are. I have a feeling they...
  6. If you don't feel like making it from scratch, you could try Namaste brand cake mixes- this is what I made for my son's 1st birthday! They have a great spice cake mix or a chocolate cake mix that is good too. I believe it is free of everything that you need to stay away from. Then I used Cherrybrook Farms vanilla frosting mix that should be good for...
  7. I just made a bean and ham soup in the crock pot for the first time...it was soooo easy. 1 large glass jar (pre-soaked) great northern beans (guessing it is a 24oz jar) 1/2 large yellow onion- finely chopped 1 lb cubed ham steak (you could substitute bacon or other pork, I'm sure) 1 cup chicken broth 2 cups water Put everything in the crock pot...
  8. No, I do follow the diet as closely as I can. I am very careful at home, have a separate toaster, etc, am careful about reading labels, choose gluten-free cosmetics, etc. I do eat out about 1-2 times a week but... this question is not about how careful I eat, it is about whether the rash is from gluten, or possibly something else...
  9. I was loosly diagnosed with celiac about a year ago (no biopsy) and have been gluten free since. In the past several months I have been getting a recurring rash on the inside of my right elbow. It starts out with tiny red bumps and spreads outward in a ring- centered right around my inner elbow fold. It is slightly itchy. The think that makes me suspect...
  10. So after being gluten-free for just over a year, I have started branching out and doing some baking of my own now. What was once a small cupboard that housed a tin of white flour, baking soda and baking powder has been replaced with over a dozen assorted flours and various other "gums" and baking supplies. It is a chaotic mess now- and way too small...
  11. Way to go Yoplait yogurt! I just noticed they now list GLUTEN FREE right on each container! I just love it when companies do this- I always buy products and support companies that list their gluten free status right on the packaging.
  12. I have had 2 different experiences at 2 Red Robin's- one said they do fry other things in their french fry frier (when they are in a pinch), the other one said it is dedicated. Be sure to ASK at your Red Robin, before you dig in!
  13. Wendy's actually has many salads that are gluten free. I like the chicken blt salad (without croutons of course), even most of their salad dressings are gluten free. They have a listing on their website that lists all of the gluten free items on their menu. Wendy's by far has the most options of fast food chains that I have seen.
  14. Check this out- I live in Wisconsin so I can get this beer locally, but it looks like it may be distributed elsewhere or shipped- it is very good and costs about the same a a good high end microbrew- certainly not $26/six pack. Open Original Shared Link
  15. I was "diagnosed" in August with Celiac Disease by a GI dr. They only did the Anti Gliadin (AGA) IgA and Anti Gliadin (AGA) IgG tests. Both came back very slightly elevated. The ranges were: 0-25 normal 25.1-75 equvocal 75.1 + up high My results were 27 and 31 respectively. Now I'm starting to doubt that I was diagnosed properly. I keep reading...
  16. I just noticed that I no longer have swolen glands in my neck- they have always been swolen, since I was a child. I've been on the gluten-free diet for 6 months now. Could the diet change have made this happen? I was even told when I was younger that it was scar tissue and they weren't "really" swolen- now I just noticed that I can't feel them at all anymore...
  17. Hmmm, I've been eating my cake for three days now and not having any problems. I got the Duncan Heins Creamy Homestyle vanilla frosting. I didn't see anything suspect on the ingreedient list unless it falls under "natural flavorings". There was not any malt/maltodextrin (barley based) listed which I guess was what they added earlier this year, then removed...
  18. Can't wait to hear how it goes- where did you buy the Mrs Robens mix? We have a Trader Joes and I've been there recently but didn't look at thier tortillas- I'll have to check it out next time I'm there. Thanks!
  19. I like corn tortillas just fine, but to be honest I really miss burritos. (I've tried a store bought rice tortilla (flour tortilla substitute) and it was yucky!) Has anyone made their own "flour" tortillas with gluten-free ingreedients? I've been considering buying a tortilla press if it is possible to make them and have them turn out. Any thoughts...
  20. New listing on the Clan Thompson site states: June 6, 2006: Duncan Hines Creamy Homestyle Frostings: We placed another call to Duncan Hines regarding their Creamy Homestyle Frosting since the labels no longer list barley malt as an ingredient. The company states they are gluten free. There are no gluten containing ingredients in the product, but there...
  21. Thank you all for your replies!! I have heard about the study for feeding gluten between 4-6 months, however we missed that window. I was newly diagnosed at that time and was still focusing on my health and recovery. We didn't introduce any foods to our son until he was 6 months old. I am breastfeeding, so we have that on our side! For now I think...
  22. Thai food yum!!! I went out for Thai last week for a work lunch party. Pad Thai is generally safe as are the curries! Ymmm. Stay away from dishes with bean sauce- they have soy sauce in them. The spring rolls (non fried, cold in rice wrappers) are delish too. When DH and I get chinese takeout I order off the "diet menu"- steamed chicken and broccoli...
  23. I hope you found something to eat there. I was there not too long ago and I asked about gluten free foods and they had a binder that listed gluten and other allergens with their complete menu. They actually had a lot of salads that are safe, and a couple of soups too! I just love places that have a printout-- and actually have things that are ok!
  24. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease this past summer. I have an 8mo old son. Right now he's eating baby food veggies and fruits and only rice cereal. Should I be feeding him wheat/oats, etc? He's about that age where he will start eating finger foods soon and I'm wondering if I should/should not be giving him Cheerio's, teething biscuits and the like...

    ARCHIVED "the Trigger"

First I think I was 1 1/2 years old when I had my first trigger- I fell down a flight of stairs, had severe digestive problems so bad that my parents put me on an ellimination diet- stayed off wheat until I was 3 years old. Was not officially diagnosed with Celiac, but back then in the 70's they thought it could "go away" anyway. Ate normally for 29 years...
