OK Guys--there's hope
WE'RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE
KEEP THOSE CALLS AND EMAILS GOING
Last nite i printed the ingred spread with the ff marked with the X for wheat
didn't go back just now to ck..but listen to this.
Last nite there were 3 SECTIONS under the search the site. gluten free menu
the link wasn't working for the gluten-free menu BUT IT WAS THERE.
BUT just checked and now the OTHER 2 are NOT THERE only the professional thread and this was listed under that so we know it was there....we all have old prints.
McDonald’s Gluten Free Menu Items: This sheet provides a list of popular McDonald’s menu items that do not contain gluten.
They are working on the web site since last nite so somethings happening at McDonalds
keep bombarding them.
I used the link that susan posted last nite in her first post.
judy
Yes, they definitely changed it since last night. The french fries are still listed on the gluten-free list but the "X" has been removed from the column to indicate "Wheat" and "Gluten" from their allergen information list.
It seems they don't know what they are doing.
But here is another issue I just thought of. The gluten free list states "McDonald's provides a listing of popular menu items that do not contain ingredients made from wheat, barley, oats or rye." If the gluten is indeed added during there frying process because of the oil they can issue a CYA stating the fries are gluten free but the oil isn't. Which would be wrong to do because of their whole dedicated fryer policy.
-
Ok - I can see them not listing the wheat as an ingredient prior to 1/01/06 since they were not legally forced to do this. It may be immoral to deceive your customers at that time but it was not illegal. However, the true negligence here is MCd's listing their french fries on their gluten free lists when they indeed were not gluten-free the whole time.
Where's Jackie Childs when you need him?

Their website - newgrist.com states it is now available nationwide and several posters here have said Whole Foods is going to carry. So hopefully it will be available in NY soon. New grist also has a phone # on the site if you want you local liquor store to carry it.
I have the RVB gluten-free beer as well but I am waiting for Super Bowl Sunday to have some.
Just wanted to update on the RVB gluten-free beer and offer a suggestion. The first one I drank was very sweet. Obviously, since its made with honey and molassess. I wasn't realy enjoying it and thought I had wasted $30 for three 6 packs. Well, my sister suggested I put a lemon in it like you do with a Corona. After, that I thought it was great. So if at first you don't like it try the lemon trick.
-
Could it just be you are not drinking alcohol as much as you did before you were diagnosed and your tolerence level how gone done? Basically you may just be getting "drunk" faster than you are used to.
I know I have gotten drunk quicker because I have been drinking vodka when I used to be a beer drinker.
Also, I read a low carb diet lowers your alchol tolerence. I've experinced that at a Bruce Springsteen concert. Bob Dylan came out and played a song with him which I had to be told had happened. Anyway since we are not eating bread, grains etc maybe all out tolerences are effected.
Just my two cents.

I still am a fan of Ramapo, but I would like to try New Grist, does anyone know if I can get it in NY?

I'm sorry if my last post was misunderstood. As I mentioned gluten-free beers in one country may be non-gluten-free in another.
The Sweedish Agency for food products actually took time to analyze the ppm gluten in a range of beers and they have published the results.
Open Original Shared Link
It's in sweedish but please pay attention to the colums "Under 20 ppm", "20-100 ppm" and "100-200 ppm". If a beer is categorized in one of those three categories it's gluten-free. if it's categorized as "Over 200 ppm" it's not gluten-free.
So the report combined with the official answer from Carlsberg in Denmark (i'll try to locate it and post it in english) has convinced me that it's safe to consume Carlsberg Beer (Pilsner), Carlsberg Export and Corona. There is a lot of gluten-free beers in the report but not all off them is sold worldwide so I'll stick to Carlsberg.
To be sure i'm going to write Carlsberg Denmark a mail asking for their opinion on Carlsberg Beers being gluten-free even if it's produced outside denmark/sweeden
You have to be careful with this. First off its in Swedish which we don't understand. Second even if it is gluten-free in Sweden does not mean it would be gluten-free in the US. Also, posters in other threads have stated that these beer companies are only testing for wheat gluten when they announce that their mainstream beer is gluten-free. As you know beer is also made from barley which is not gluten free. If they are only testing for wheat gluten then the test is N/G.
I just purchased the Ramapo Valley Brewery gluten-free beer in a Whole Foods in Mahattan. Have not tasted it yet. I'm waiting for the weekend.

You state the doctor said "eventually" which is possible. They are doing tests for certain medications however who knows when they will be available and what the side effects could be. I would take it myself down the road, if the side effects were not terrible, but if you read some of the posts a lot of people here would just stay gluten free.
As far as cheating now without the aide of medication all opinions are that it is not a good idea.
-
I'm fascinated and skeptical about the Corona comment. Where did you get that information from?
I drove across town to buy a six-pack of Ramapo Valley beer from the local Bevmo. It's pretty good. It sweet, but not really sweet, though it has a hint of cinnamon on the first sip, and its a little more carbonated than your average beer. I passed out shots of it to the boys in the house and they confirmed that it tasted like beer and thought it was pretty good. I like it, it makes me happy that I have something for the superbowl.
I had a disastrous experience with Bards Beer a while back, I got some of a bad batch and it was foul and disgusting and then I gave some to Tiffany and it exploded in her kitchen so I am loath to mail order gluten-free beer now.
My Whole Foods may start carrying Grist next month, I look forward to it.
Elonwy
What Wole Foods are you referring to? I used to get Bard's Beer at the Whole Foods in Manhattan but they have not had it in months.
Thanks
-
I will carry Bardsbeer at all Deby's Gluten Free Bakery Stores. I hope it is really as good as reported. I've never been a beer drinker, so I'm not a good judge.
You state you will be carrying Bards Beer. Have you been in contact with Bards Beer recently? Its seemed around 6 months ago they had a brewing issues and stop production. It is rumored here that they have gone out of business. Just wondering if you have heard anything from them since you are a retailer.
Thanks,
Kevin
If it's not confirmed directly by Heineken consider it a rumour. As far as I know only Carlsberg has officially confirmed that some of their beers is gluten-free. Carlsberg Pilsner and Carlsberg Export is gluten-free but it can differ from region to region. To be absolutely sure you should contact your local Carlsberg office. I did and the beers for the Nordic markets is gluten-free. Open Original Shared Link
Btw Corona is gluten-free (made of corn)
I doubt Carlsberg is gluten-free and Corona is not gluten-free.
Here is the response from the Corona webite's FAQ's"
What are the ingredients in Corona Extra?
Corona Extra is made with all natural ingredients, water, barley, hops and yeast.

Hello,
RamapoValleybrewery.com. They have it and used to ship it. I haven't tried it. Maybe you can call them.
I have tried Bards Beer which I bought in a Whole Foods in Manhattan. Unfortunatly, they haven't had a shipment in awhile and they may have gone out of business. I emailed them and have not received a response.
Also, its not beer but many hard ciders are gluten-free.
Good luck,
Kevin

IN a forum that I posted two days ago, someone told me that ALL dry roasted nuts are contaminated. They did make the point though that not all ROASTED nuts have gluten, but all DRY roasted nuts. What do you think?
Hmmmmmm........
I've had reactions to nuts as well - bad DH and a rash. But not all the time. So much that I went to allergist to get tested for a nut allergy. Which I don't have. It was at a time I was doing the South Beach diet and eating a ton of them. I assumed it was just from eating too many. But you make an interesting point.
I have emailed Planters so lets see it we get a response. If you can't wait for the answer this is posted on their website:
How do I obtain allergen information for your products?

I took a Carnival cruise in August to the Carribean (sp?). They did a pretty good job. I spoke with the head chef the first day and told him about my situation. They seemed used to dealing with allergies/intolerances. They asked that I not eat at the buffets b/c of cross contamination, but they were more than happy to serve me food either in the restaurant or through room service. I ordered everything plain (plain meat, potatoes, veggies, hamburger patties - specifying that they could not touch a bun, etc). You can bring dry goods on board too, so I brought chips, cookies, and cereal. They tell you not to bring items that need refrigeration, but I did b/c I knew that they had a little room fridge in there - took out their snickers bars and stuffed it with my soy milk!
Search under the travel discussion - I think others have posted about their cruise line experiences too.
I took a Carnival Cruise in August and thought they did a great job in the dining room to accomadate my celiac disease as well. What ship were you on? I basically handled it the same way you did. I even ate at the outside grill. The meat was cooked on the grill with the buns on a plate and all they cooked where burgers, dogs chicken and steak. No breaded chicken fingers or stuff like that so I felt it was safe.
Also, I have read some of the more expensive cruise lines will even bake you gluten-free bread etc. Carnival did not offer this much accomadation.

I like Dannon Plain Yogurt and Stonyfield Farm Plain. That way I can add what I want - fruit, honey, etc
Dannon & Stonyfield state on their websites they cannot quarantee their yogurts are gluten free due to some sort of process. They may just be covering their asses but who knows? Yoplait is one of the only mainstream yougurts I researched that stated they were gluten free except for the obvious ones with cookies or granola etc.

I ate at Pastamoria in the Citywalk. I know I am spelling it wrong. I had a steak and asked for no sauces etc. The waiter seemed pretty knowledgeable about gluten-free. They also had a flourless chocalate dessert which I had. It wasn't great but hey it was cake.
Didn't go to these but their are a PF Changs,. Carrabbas & an Outback in the Orlando / Kissimmee area. They each have a gluten-free menu.
Enjoy your vacation

I had a similar situation at PF Changs recently. We went there because there was 2 of us dining with celiac. We asked for the gluten-free menus and verified the appetizers were gluten-free as they brought them out. The server was very helpful and understanding (we had a party of 14 with 8 kids) and brought out the gluten-free soy sauce etc.
However, when they brought my main course I asked if it was gluten-free and they said yes. Then a few minutes later they came back and said they made a mistake. I had not eaten it yet as I was finishing the gluten-free lettuce wraps. My initial reaction was relief and I thanked them for catching and admitting their mistake. Later, I thought to myself should I have gotten upset since they made the error to begin with.
Should we have had doubts about the enitire meal or should we feel extra confident that they corrected their mistake?
BTW - I felt fine afterwards but I don't always have an immediate reaction.
-
You do have the possibility of cross contamination due to the fact they make non gluten-free food here. I've had the Hoeny Rice and I've been fine. You just have to make sure you get the Hoeny Rice. The other flavors have oats in them and are not gluten-free.
-
Welcome,
I am from NJ also. Here are some places to shop for gluten-free food if they are near you.
Wegmans - By Woodbridger Center
Trader Joes - Westfield
Whole Foods - Short Hills - Milburn
Good luck with everything.
-
I've called the company cause I loved skins prediagnosis and they state they are not gluten free.
when you have doubts about a product ALWAYS call the manufactutor before consumption, even if it looks safe.
Did you call Heinz or the TGIF restaurants? I could see the restaurant telling you they are not gluten-free due to cross contamination etc? I was talking about the ones you buy and take home and cook yourself.
Thanks,
Kevin
-
I think its a CYA. Not related to gluten but I was checking Chips Ahoy and Keebler cookies. (Son is allergic to tree nuts) and all bags state "may contain peanuts".
-
Does anyone know if the store bought TGIF potato skins & spinach dip are gluten-free? The box states allergins as soy and milkon both. They are distributed by Heinz. Are they a company that won't hide gluten? The only questionalbe thing I see is MFS.
Thanks,
Kevin

Had success with SBD. Lost about 30lbs. Put it back on and more when I went back to carbs. Be careful when you go off it.
-
You really should check it since it is flavored. There could be gluten added with the flavoring.
Distilled alcohol loses the gluten in the process but this theory is debated here back and forth.
Some people can't even have the distilled alcohol as you stated. I've had vodka since being diagnosed and I think its ok for me.

Some of the hard ciders are gluten-free. You can search this message board for the exact ones. Its kind of like a beer.
Also, Ramapo Valley Brewery used to ship gluten-free beer made from honey. The website is Ramapovalleybrewery.com. You can contact them to see if they still ship. It was expensive when they did.
I doubt Rolling Rock is gluten-free. Never heard that one before and I've been dealing with C/D for 3 years.

Hello,
I give you some pointers even though you are a Jets fan. Only kidding, I'm a Giants fan here.
There is a gluten-free beer called Bard's Tale. The website is bardsbeer.com. The only problem is they had some sort of problem with the beer making process and its currently off the market. They state they are working on the problem and will have more available soon. Let's hope. You can get it in Manhattan at the Whole Foods on 7th Ave. I'm assuming you are in the NY area since you are a Jets fan.
I've had this beer and it is good. More of an ale than I was used to since I was a Bud Man in my pre-Celiac day. It definitely filled the craving for beer so lets hope they get it back on the shelves.
The is also a brewery in Hillburn, NY called the Ramapo Valley Brewery. They have a gluten-free beer made from honey. I have not tried this one but some say it is good. They used to ship it but I think they may have stopped. The S&H fees were crazy.
Also, I think they only sell it to go at the actual location. You could call them and find out.
Also, some of the hard ciders are gluten-free and its sort of like a beer.
Good luck,
Kevin
Mcdonald's French Fries Not Safe?
in Gluten-Free Restaurants

Well the conspiracy theorists will have a ball with this one.
Here is what I got when I tried to email McDonalds:

You do not have access to this script.
Worked fine last night. Even tried a differenct email account to see if they blocked my message since I had sent one already. Didn't work either.
