ARCHIVED Questions About Symptoms..confused
annacsmom replied to Bon359's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
[quote If I decide to cut gluten out for a test. How do I handle that? My whole family won't do it so I have to cook for them. Plus I can't through out my pots and untensils just to try. What do you recommend? I thought I would get tested first so I don't have to go through all that if I don't have it. But then I'm afraid of the future insurance repercussions... -
ARCHIVED Questions About Symptoms..confused
annacsmom replied to Bon359's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI and wecome to this board. You understandably have a lot of questions so I'll try to help you out with a few. I'd like to give you my experience with my 18 yr. old daughter. Along with everyone else on this site, her journey has been long and difficult. But a few things ring true in your story. First of all, she has Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, and... -
I have just began to do some gluten free baking and I notice that corn starch is used all the time. I just told a friend of mine and she said that corn starch is no good for you (according to her health conscious friend) Has anyone else heard about this, and if it isn't good for you, then what are the reasons?? Thanks in advance.

ARCHIVED Snack Size Candy
annacsmom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
HI I just need to know if the snack size butterfingers, snickers, milky way are gluten free. I don't mean the bite size but the snack size. I think I read somewhere that there might be wheat in the smaller sizes, but I didn't know if they meant snack size or bite size. Also, does anyone know if tootsie rolls are gluten-free? Thanks for your help -
ARCHIVED Malabsorption Results
annacsmom replied to annacsmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for all your replies. I should also mention that his gene tests showed HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ1. His older sister has suffered from autoimmune diseases since she was 4, and now is gluten free. She also didn't have any intestinal issues, but began developing neuropathies this year. I consider her a celiac, although she opted not to have the biopsy. ... -
ARCHIVED Who Knows What Their Genes Are?
annacsmom replied to Rachel--24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Now I'm confused about what constitutes having celiac if there are no symptoms present. For example, my son (13) tested as follows: Antigliadin IgA 20; Transglutaminase IgA 10; genes: HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ1. If one doesn't go the biopsy route, which I'm not convinced is conclusive, then how does one really know if it is celiac? He is very healthy, growing... -
ARCHIVED Malabsorption Results
annacsmom replied to annacsmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
OK but here's the rub - he is virtually symptom free other than having some sinus problems such as a runny nose, but no infections at all. He is actually very healthy. I only got him tested because his older sister has had a history of autoimmune diseases and now we think we have figured out that it is celiac. He is 13 and constantly growing and very athletic... -

ARCHIVED Malabsorption Results
annacsmom posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My enterolab results for my son showed the following: Antigliadin IgA 20, Ttg 10, but malabsorption totally normal. Does this just mean that he is gluten sensitive but doesn't have celiac? -

How can they possibly know for sure that tTG in their stool test is *only* caused by gluten. What kind of studies have they done to support this? -
ARCHIVED Questions?!
annacsmom replied to lax87's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
For starters, go to the site index on this website and print out the Safe and Forbidden Lists. This is a great resource. Also, I purchased the book "Celiac Disease - a Hidden Epidemic" by Peter Greene. Also, I know there is a Celiac for Dummies Book, which I assume is a good overall look at celiac. Maybe check it out on Amazon for some reviews. Also... -
ARCHIVED Flavor Extracts
annacsmom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm getting ready to do some holiday baking, and I was wondering if the "alcohol" in my pure extracts (vanilla, almond, etc) is safe to use. The alcohol thing still has me confused. -
ARCHIVED Questions?!
annacsmom replied to lax87's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
First, welcome. I know you will find the help and support here on these forums. As far as the symptoms, I know that severe panic and anxiety attacks are also symptoms. Depression is all too common. Whatever you are experiencing, it is probably due to being glutened since you have had times of feeling well. I hope that you become completely gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Qvc gluten-free Chicken Tenders
annacsmom posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just found out from my mother that QVC apparently has a gourmet products show and one of their items is a box of gluten free chicken tenders. I quickly put on the show, because I couldn't believe that they actually stated it was gluten free. The chef was so kind and actually said that he was priveleged to bring on this product. It's also casein and sugar... -
ARCHIVED Mother Of Newly Diagnosed Celiac
annacsmom replied to judycolby's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I really sympathize with your difficulties with your son. My daughter was just diagnosed "unofficially - meaning without the biopsy) two weeks before starting college away from home. But looking back, I feel so bad that since 7th grade all through high school she was miserable. After going to a myriad of different doctors, we settled on a naturopath who... -
Source Naturals makes some in the methylcobalamin form, and they specifically state gluten-free. In all forms, lower dosages are absorbed more effectively than larger ones.

Thanks for all your replies. Georgie: She is taking an iron supplement -- is that good enough for her very low ferritin level? NicoleAJ: Thanks for the info about b12. I thought her level was ok. She is taking a b complex vitamin for energy, immune system, etc. But if she starts going downhill, as she has been known to do, I think I'll try the...

ARCHIVED Where To Go For Assistance?
annacsmom replied to Julie M's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just another note - please be sure the supplements you take are gluten free. And make sure if you take a vitamin e, that's it's not from wheat germ oil. We found out the hard way. And welcome - this forum is a wealth of information. -
Can anyone explain what pernicious anemia is. My daughter is highly anemic - ferritin level of 5, but her b12 is about 590. She also has hashimoto's, celiac, and has had vitiligo has a child. I don't know if this is something else we should look out for. Thanks

ARCHIVED Not Serious?
annacsmom replied to Ophelia42's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
CarlaB Does your daughter have celiac also?? I'm suspicious that my 13 yr. old son may have it -- he is always congested and intermittently has had migraines and stomachaches. My 18 yr.old daughter was just diagnosed two months ago. I'm not sure how to approach getting him tested. Do I do bloodwork from our MD, enterolab, or just try the diet??? -
ARCHIVED General Mills
annacsmom replied to Nic's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just bought two very large boxes of cocoa puffs because I read the ingredients, and no malt was listed anywhere. It still makes me nervous to use it after reading your threads. I did buy them at Big Lots, so maybe they are leftovers from the "days of Old"?? -
ARCHIVED Nerves And Celiacs
annacsmom replied to Montana Julie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My daughter is a newly diagnosed freshman at college and interestingly, stomach issues and D were not among her myriad of symptoms. But during this first month there, she has had more D than in her life. I know it isn't gluten because she pretty much buys her own food and is extremely careful about what she eats on campus. Anyway, after ruling out different... -
ARCHIVED Mom Of College Student
annacsmom replied to annacsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Dear UofMMom, It sure sounds like celiac to me. My daughter began her journey at four yrs. old with vitiligo, but developed very severe Hashimoto's Hypo. in middle school. We only figured out the celiac after high school. Your son's symptoms sound exactly like my daughter's main ones, although she also had various neuropathies. She, too, is very anemic... -
ARCHIVED Boulder, Estes Park, Co Restaurants Needed
annacsmom replied to ArtC's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
To lexsprs: Thank you so much for replying. My daughter is finding it somewhat challenging, but does go shopping once a week at Whole Foods. I'm sure she would benefit from some kind of support. It's very difficult not being able to cook her own food - I wish I could cook her a good home cooked meal, but we live in Arizona. Unfortunately, she ate at Chipotle...
