  1. Are you talking about other untested family members, or about your other kids, yourself, and your husband? If you're talking about the latter, I would just go with the info Enterolab gave you and take everybody off glutens. They all have genes that show they will likely have a problem with glutens.
  2. I wanted to add that while breastmilk is lower in iron than formula, it is more bio-available and more efficiently used than iron from cereals or formula. There is no need to supplement with cereal. In fact, before the age of about six months or so, both the AAP and WHO advise against introducing solids at all because the gut isn't "sealed" yet. Open...
  3. I would even take it a step further and say that not only is he abusing you, but your daughter as well by doing that in front of her. Abuse is a deal-breaker, in my book.
  4. Jeeze, that IS scary. I don't seem to be all that sensitive (as far as I can tell anyway), but my husband is. Being gluten-free is hard enough without contending with that kind of nonsense!!
  5. I looked at a bag of chips not too long ago (sorry, I don't remember the name of them). On the label it said "gluten free", but on the ingredients list one of the first ingredients was OAT FLOUR. I know that oats in and of themselves don't contain glutens, but I found it scary this product was labeled gluten free, when it seems most celiacs avoid oats because...
  6. Lactose intolerance in children IS very rare. Breastmilk contains lactose as well, so if your son was lactose intolerant he would be VERY sick by now. Here's some more info on it: Open Original Shared Link The issue is likely to be something you're eating (dairy, glutens, etc.), or possibly something you're feeding him (if he's taking baby food or table...
  7. My son had negative blood tests (I refused the biopsy), but a very positive dietary response. According to Enterolab he doesn't have any celiac genes, but does have two genes for gluten intolerance.
  8. Before we got our son diagnosed and started on the gluten-free diet, his toenails used to crack & peel pretty regularly. His finger nails never did it though. Now that he's been gluten-free about a year his toenails no longer do that.
  9. It is....and now that my one year old is refusing baby foods and wanting table foods, it'll be double...actually more because I pack my lunch and DH has decided he wants me to pack a lunch for him too!
  10. Oh thanks for that! I'll have to check out one of the Asian markets - I didn't even think to look there.
  11. I've been watching this thread for a while, and the Bento box looks really cool. I'd be more inclinded to get the "copycat" at Target a pp was talking about (I have two kids I send food for and I can't see shelling out $30 a pop). My question is this - my boys are in daycare and I have to send breakfast, lunch, and 2 or 3 snacks....I love the idea of the...
  12. We just recently started trying small amounts of dairy with our 3 year old son after being gluten-free for a year and CF pretty much his whole life. He seems to be handling it ok, whereas before even the tiniest exposure would cause him to develop hives and severe diarrhea. I don't think we'll ever make dairy a regular part of our diets, but I think an occasional...
  13. If you're really feeling that unsure about the shots, you can get an exemption - either medical or religious/philosophical (depending on whether or not you meet the criteria for a medical exemption). If nothing else, you can get it just to allow you time to make up your mind or take the vaxes slowly. You can always get the vax whenever you want (or not at...
  14. Yeah I didn't find the batter to be thin either - I thought it was just fine. Next time I may try fiddling with it a bit - maybe using applesauce rather than eggs (my oldest is sensitive to eggs and I believe I may be, too). I may also try adding a bit more brown sugar too - I prefer my brownies a little on the sweeter side. I found them to be very good though...
  15. Open Original Shared Link The only caveat I have is to make sure you grind the almonds really well, otherwise there's a bit of a crunch from them. I would also recommend leaving them slightly undercooked so they don't dry out. They have wonderful chocolate flavor and are easily the best brownies I've had since going gluten-free. My DH said he thought they...
  16. DH and I carry genes for gluten sensitivity. We don't know if either of us has celiac or celiac genes, but our older son has two gluten sensitive genes. We're just keeping the whole fam damily gluten-free and may or may not have our 9 month old gene tested at some point. Really - cereal isn't necessary. I haven't given my 9 month old any cereal, and haven...
  17. My son's celiac panel was negative and his GI doctor wanted to do a biopsy, which I refused. She then decided she would no longer help me, and even discouraged me from trying the celiac diet, saying "it sucks." I had him genetically tested and found out that he doesn't carry either of the two recognized celiac genes, but he does carry two genes for gluten...
  18. Thanks so much for all the help! We're also avoiding the top 8 allergens for a bit because my older son has a history of milk/egg allergy, and I have seasonal allergies. Guess I should have mentioned that too - can't you guys just read my mind? Your suggestions definitely give me a great jumping-off point and I can see which things are appropriate...
  19. Cool - I didn't know about these things - thank you!
  20. I'm sure this has been covered before, sorry if this is a repeat. I was just wondering what finger foods would be safe. My son is nine months old and has two teeth. So far the only finger foods I've given him are gluten-free brown rice cakes and quartered grapes (which are a little too slippery for him). The kids at daycare have crackers and he tries to...
  21. Is there any such thing as gluten-free ice cream cones? My son's daycare is having an ice cream party on Friday, with ice cream cones. I'm obviously going to supply the rice ice cream (he's allergic to milk, too) and some Enjoy Life chocolate chips as a topping. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if he has to have his in a bowl since that's how he's always...
  22. It took me a while to figure out that my son's yellow poop was caused by the rice milk he's drinking. Mind you, he had no other symptoms of being glutened, and I felt relatively confident he wasn't. Is that a possibility with you, too?
  23. This is us to a "T" (in fact Vicky was the one who helped me finally figure that out! LOL). Removing gluten from our diets has improved our health in SO many ways - and yet we don't carry the genes for celiac disease - "only" for gluten sensitivity.
  24. Do be careful with soy - many people with casein allergy/intolerance also react to soy.
