ARCHIVED Celiac-when Family Members Refuse To Get It
ginghamkim replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How absolutely insensitive! It's your shower afterall! How sad that would be to see a almost full-term woman at her own baby shower eating her food out of tupperware that she brought for herself. That is sad! Can you do a light appetizer shower? There are alot of gluten-free appetizer recipes. You could have two cakes...one for the gluten-lovers... -
ARCHIVED Celiac-when Family Members Refuse To Get It
ginghamkim replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Family can be the most difficult. Plus, most social occasions are centered around food which makes us very anxious. My therapist (yes, I recommend this to anyone), is to do the following: (1) Send a letter or have a packet that explains celiac, the testing procedures, the side effects, what happens when you eat it (be blunt...that it increases your... -
Thank you FEELGOOD for your positive statements. I'm so glad that your body is healing. I just wish we could drop the "Disease" from Celiac Disease. It is only a disease relative to society. Basically, it is not us, it's our environment and the foods we are exposed to. Anyway, great message...just what I needed today! Kim

Kathy, Can you be more specific? If I can't answer a question there are many others who can. It's all very overwhelming at first and you can experience a mourning period of sadness/anger/resentment/adaptation. Sounds crazy, but it happens. Do you need help with meal ideas? Snacks? Drinks? At first, I looked in my cabinet and thought there...

ARCHIVED Vitamins
ginghamkim replied to lilypad23's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just started to take Kirkman Labs prenatal vitamin today. It says it does not contain sugar, starch, soy, acacia, wheat, corn, milk, yeast, casein, gliadin, gluten or artificial colorings. Many of their other products are free of many things too. Plus, they offer trial packs. Does anyone have advice of taking vitamins? Should I be ramping up to... -
Kathy, You asked about sites and restaurants. Regarding sites, I use this forum alot for recipes and to see if a ingredient or product really is gluten-free. Another site I use for recipes is Open Original Shared Link and foodnetwork.com. There is a wheat-free section on the elise section. If you choose to eat naturally gluten-free food, you'll be...

ARCHIVED Info On Kroger Distilled White Vinegar
ginghamkim posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi! I have a feeling that this post is going to open a gluten-free can of worms, but here it goes. I emailed Kroger about their Distilled White Vinegar. The dietician left a voicemail and said that at least 90% of the grain used is corn. However, the remaining 10% can be wheat or other grains. After final distillation, the vinegar is gluten... -
Hi Kathy! I'm in Warren County (soon to move to a farm in Clinton County) in Southwest Ohio. Wow, advice? I don't feel qualified or experienced enough, but I can help to answer any questions you might have. I still am learning so much. This forum is outstanding and really has helped me. I've been gluten-free since Christmas 2006. I still have...

ARCHIVED Glutened At Hair Salon
ginghamkim replied to ginghamkim's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi! Finally better a week after my haircut...whew. I've been thinking about how to get a haircut with out getting glutened. Perhaps I'll call my salon and find out the slowest day and when only a few stylist are there. Then I'll try to schedule first thing in the morning. Here's a business idea for anyone interested....start an traveling salon and... -
ARCHIVED Glutened At Hair Salon
ginghamkim replied to ginghamkim's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks Patti, that's one option for sure. I'm glad I'm not imagining things. -
Hi! My husband thinks this is far fetched, but I need to ask all you experts. If a hair salon uses a hairspray that contains hydrolized wheat protein, is it possible to get glutened from the particles floating in the air? I stopped my stylist only seconds after she started to spray me. It seems that if all the other stylist (10 chair salon) are using...

ARCHIVED Too Much Fat?
ginghamkim replied to radgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, fat is a problem for me too. I have to ration nuts, eggs, and meat. It makes my duodenum, gallbladder and pancreas work harder. If I have recently been glutened, I have to really try to avoid fat for about 2 weeks. If you need protein, remember that low-fat egg whites have more protein than the yolk. -
ARCHIVED To Take Progesterone Or Wing It?
ginghamkim replied to ginghamkim's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks everyone. I did find out that the pill is gluten-free, sf and df. I just wonder if I could go without and do it "naturally". Thanks for the tip about the blood test! -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Female Hormone
ginghamkim replied to tammy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi! I know you posted this a while ago, but I wanted to know if you have been taking prometrium and if you have had any problems with it? I took this during my first pregnancy before I was gluten-free and I have a prescription for the next time around. Thanks! Kim -
I miscarried my first pregnancy. My ob/gyn prescribed progesterone, she called it her magic potion, to see if I would carry. I did and have a healthy boy. Ten months later, I became ill and diagnosised myself with celiac. We would like to try for #2 but I'm hesitant to take progesterone b/c it can cause constipation, indigestion and who knows what the...

ARCHIVED Baby Wash
ginghamkim replied to momof2sn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I use Burt's Bees Baby Bee Shampoo and Wash (tear free) on my 18 month old. To my best knowledge it is gluten-free (ingredients are listed on their website www.burtsbees.com) . I've also seen numerous post for California Baby products as gluten free, but I have not tried them yet. Cosmetics are a tough one. I started to use Bare Minerals and... -
ARCHIVED Buttered Popcorn?
ginghamkim replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi! I'm a popcorn lover and just had to respond. When I went gluten-free, I gave away all my microwave popcorn. I can't remember the ingredients specifically, but it has all kinds of bad stuff in it...msg (can be labeled something different), soy, artifical butter flavor...who really knows what it is. I agree with TLT, air-popped is best. I stay away... -
ARCHIVED Grain Fed Beef?
ginghamkim replied to FeedIndy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi...I know this is an older post, but I wanted to tell you about my experience over the weekend. I had to purchase steak from the grocery store (starts with W and is all over the nation) for the first time since going gluten-free (we have freezer full of beef from my uncle's farm and I've not had to buy it), and I believe I was glutened by it. It must... -
ARCHIVED Chap Stick
ginghamkim replied to Calikat4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Burt's Bees and love it. It is all natural and doesn't contain any oil/petroleum products. Also make sure that what ever you use doesn't have alcohol in it...it will dry your lips. -
ARCHIVED Grain Fed Beef?
ginghamkim replied to FeedIndy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Angelbender, Most people don't know the difference between straw and hay unless you farmed. Straw is the stem, leaves and haul of wheat. After wheat grain is stripped from the plant, the farm machinery called a combine, spits the stem, leaves and haul back on the ground. This is called straw. Then a bailer will take the stem, leaves and haul and... -
ARCHIVED I Need A Quick, Sugary Snack Stat!
ginghamkim replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I fix something a little different that has a salty-sweetness. It is Curry Popcorn...air-popped popcorn, dizzled with a mixture of olive oil (or butter), curry powder, a dash of sugar (or more if you want), a pinch of salt, and a dash of ginger powder. Stir mixture and dizzle over popcorn. Sorry, I don't measure things. My husband and 17 month old... -
ARCHIVED Grain Fed Beef?
ginghamkim replied to FeedIndy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi! I grew up raising beef cattle and represented the State of Ohio's Beef Industry in 1994. I can say from personal experience that cattle typically bloat when feed wheat and oats are very expensive to add to the feed mixture. We fed our herd corn and hay. This is typically what you will see in the feed mix. One, it is cheap and two, it causes less... -
Hi! I don't know if this is still relevant, but have you considered garlic chives? I grow them in my herb garden and just snip off what I need when I cook. They are part of the onion family, but you eat the green leaves not the bulbs. However, if someone knows that you can't eat chives even if you have an intolerance to onion and garlic bulbs, please...
