  1. Sorry I used to be that girl, but now that I'm older I've realized what a monster I was and have apologized. After all of that, for some reason, I chose to teach 9th grade. Although it might not work for you, the phrase I repeat to myself thousands of times a day is, "Never let a 15 year old kid ruin your day." It keeps things in perspective...
  2. You're welcome! I searched around and found some sites that explain the basic tortilla making process. I'll post those links below. Basically, you need the corn meal, which you can usually buy near the flours or in the ethnic section of your supermarket, wax paper or Ziploc freezer bags, and a tortilla press or rolling pin. I have an aluminum tortilla...
  3. Hi and welcome! I would suggest the following: 1. Read everything you can on this site and others. There are some good blogs and other website that are very helpful. This site Open Original Shared Link has a survival guide for the newly diagnosed that will help you. 2. Don't freak out. It's a lifestyle change, but it's up to you whether...
  4. I've eliminated soy because it makes my gut feel almost like I've eaten gluten. If it makes me feel bad, I cut it out of my diet. Everyone is different, you may not have problems with soy or dairy, but a lot of celiacs do.
  5. You're probably fine eating them. They have huge mills in Mexico where they prepare the corn meal and nothing else. Obviously it's a large business down there. The presses used to make corn tortillas and flour ones are different, so you really should be okay. And in my experience, I've only seen places that make flour on their tortilla machines or corn...
  6. I haven't heard of them. I usually buy Maseca (the ground corn meal used to make masa) and make my own tortillas and gorditas and sopes and things. Did you have any questions about them?

    ARCHIVED Team Gluten-free

I would love to do to the rock and roll half marathon in Phoenix. I've actually been training in the hopes that I can do it. The only problem is the $100 price tag plus lodging for the night. I can pay for a semester of college for my boyfriend with that much money. I'm going to keep training and saving my pennies so that I can try and make it there...
  8. I tell people about it all the time. There's nothing I can do about it, so I don't really think of it as something that I caused or something I can change or should be embarrassed about. It's just a part of me. Think about your reactions to people with allergies. What do you think of them? My response has usually just been, "Oh, okay, good to know."...
  9. It could be the yogurt. You should probably cut out the dairy for a bit as most celiacs also have problems with dairy. If you do a search of the boards you can find more info. I gotta go to work or I'd elaborate and explain. Ezme
  10. Hi Steven, I wonder if you called and asked them more questions if they could elaborate on why the products aren't gluten free. I, personally, have continued to use my protein powder, but as you are still healing, it will probably be recommended to cut out dairy for a while too. That's what most people have done in order to allow the villi to...
  11. Wow. That is definately abuse. I agree that counseling and/or other steps are necessary. You do not deserve to be treated that way. You aren't his possession, employee, or slave. He has more than crossed the line from being insensitive.
  12. Hi and welcome! Someone else was asking about the whey protein the other day and said he was contacting the company. He hasn't posted whether he's heard back or not. I have the vanilla whey protein usually mixed in with my plain yogurt and berries or in a smoothie almost everyday and haven't had any problems. I never contacted the company to find out...
  13. Hi, sorry you're having a hard time with weight. I've lost 100+ pounds and kept it off for about 10 years, so I understand the work that it takes. Here are my questions for you to help you figure out what more you could do. -How consistent are you in your diet and with your workouts? -Do you use anything like www.fitday.com to keep track of what...
  14. I usually have their vanilla protein powder either mixed in with plain yogurt or in smoothies. I haven't had any problems with it. I never called the company to ask because I was already eating it and not having any problems. Ezme
  15. I used to get them all the time, but now that I've cut out the gluten, I haven't had any.
  16. Check out this link: Open Original Shared Link If you look in the International Room posting board someone else was asking about gluten free flours in Peru. Ezme
  17. I'm actually driving 3 hours to either Phoenix or San Diego pretty frequently to stock up on gluten free foods. I don't go as often to the restaurants though. Could you have a combination store/restaurant? That might draw more customers.
  18. You should be able to get egg protein powder just like the whey. You could go to the GNC website and search their proteins. I did that the other day and they have some that are from goat's milk and some that are from egg whites.
  19. Luckily I don't need a new doctor because my GP and GI both told me that I was "fine" after not listening to a word that I said. I was so "fine" that they refused to run any tests or even do a thorough exam. I guess that means I'm okay, right? Well, aside from the pain, bloating, gas, loss of coordination, etc.
  20. While I don't have a direct answer to your question, I did a little searching and sorgo seems to be correct as far as the translation goes. I looked on Open Original Shared Link and it was listed on the right hand side if you scroll down. Here's a link with lots more information. Open Original Shared Link ( Open Original Shared Link...
  21. I agree with a lot of the others who have never hated it. I was so happy to figure out what was wrong with me that I never thought to be angry. I was focused on getting my life back. I think growing up with my brother, who is deathly allergic to peanuts and legumes, got me somewhat prepared for being careful with food. He can die instantly if he eats...
  22. I haven't had any problems with mine and I put tuna, salmon, salads, soup, yogurt, et cetera in it and haven't ever noticed any residual odor. On the days when I do have something with a lot of dressing or liquid, I'll put the actual lunch box inside a freezer sized ziploc bag because liquids can get out and into the insulated lunch bag. I find it's easier...
  23. Do you have a rice cooker or a crockpot? Those would make it easy to make something without a lot of effort.
  24. Hi Sara, I think you'll probably be okay at the resort, but you're going to have to chat with the kitchen manager and cooks if possible. If you can make them understand that wheat = food poisoning type symptoms, they will probably understand. My soon-to-be in-laws didn't understand it until I told them it was like comiendo comida envenenada. Then...
  25. Hi, I used to live in Mexico and spent 2 months there this summer visiting my boyfriend, so I can help you with most of the things you need, especially if you're traveling to the central or northwestern parts of the country. Let me know if you have any questions about more specific things because I don't know if you have any other allergies or needs...
