  1. Have fun in Nashville!! :) I was there two years ago and was surprised at how much I loved the city!! I, too, am heading out of state for a bowl game and understand how difficult it can be trying to find restaurant info!!

I googled "gluten free nashville" and here are two links that I found with quite a bit of information on local restaurants:

    Hope that helps!

  2. Hi everyone!! I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions for restaurants/grocery stores in the Tampa area?? I'm going to be heading down there around New Years for the Outback bowl (I'm a senior in college at the University of Wisconsin ----- Go Bucky!!).

Anyway, back to the point -- I'm going to be staying in Tampa and then heading to Lakeland to visit some family for a few days and any help with suggestions would very much be appreciated! :)

    Thanks in advance,

  3. Hey guys! I'm going to be a senior at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I was diagnosed at the end of my freshman year of college, so I know how hard it is to completely change your lifestyle and try to survive college at the same time! :)

Good luck to those of you in dorms. I lived in the dorms for a semester after being diagnosed and it was really stressful. I lived on nachos made in the microwave (melted cheese on tostitos and dipped in salsa), junk food, and fruit and vegetables! Luckily, the university permitted me to have a small freezer in my dorm, so I kept it stocked full of food that my mom made for me at home.

If anyone wants to chat about anything, feel free to drop me a line.

Okay so I need someone who was IBS-C or similar diagnosis before celiac disease diagnosis.

So if this is you, what happens when you get glutened now? Have you switched to D. I think I have been contaminated 2 times and it was dizziness and nausea and mostly just fatigue and feeling like laying in bed all day. Some pain.....

    Anyone?

I alternated between constipation and diarrhea pre-diagnosis. When I get glutened, I get fatigued, nauseous, feverish, and want to curl up in a ball and never move! I have Crohn's, too, so I think that affects why sometimes I get diarrhea and sometimes constipation....

I hope it helps knowing you're not the only one with those symptoms! :)

  5. I used to have the same problem. All of the supposedly gluten-free vitamins I was trying made me incredibly nauseous within an hour of taking them. I tried so many different kinds and they all made me sick, even though they were gluten free. I even refused to take vitamins for awhile!! After being lectured by my nurse practitioner and my mom, I decided to continue on my search for a vitamin that didn't make me feel like laying in the fetal position for hours! :) Anyway, I'm now on Nature Made Multi Daily, though I'm gonna try the kind made just for women after this bottle runs out. It even says "No Chmical Solvents, Yeast, or Gluten" on the back!

Anyway, good luck searching for a vitamin! I know it can be frustrating!!

  6. Hello!

I'm heading out to San Francisco in a couple of weeks to visit my brother and sister-in-law who moved there last month. I was wondering if anyone could suggest any restaurants?!? They live in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood, but we'll probably hit up all of the touristy spots (North Beach, Chinatown, the Marina District... the works!).

I also want to get tours of some of the medical schools in the area since I would LOVE to live in the San Francisco area as soon as possible! :)

So, yeah... any suggestions for eating out would be MUCH appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

  7. In order to test for lactorse intolerance, my doctor suggested that I completely get rid of it for three days and then have a giant glass of milk on the fourth day to see if my symptoms (diarrhea and lots of gas) came back.

Too bad I'm from Wisconsin (born and raised with some of the best dairy products around) and haven't yet brought myself to try testing for lactose intolerance! I made it about 13 hours before someone was shoving cheese down my throat!

    Anyway, good luck!

I think Hidden Valley's is gluten free, but I'm not sure. Cool Ranch Doritos would be really good in a ranch flavored chex mix.

Huh - the last I had heard, Hidden Valley's dry packet was NOT gluten free. Maybe I'm wrong, though. It'd be great if it was... My mom (also celiac) uses Simply Organic Ranch Dip mix instead of the Hidden Valley kind. I haven't tried it yet, but she says it's pretty tasty.

  9. I cheated about 2 days after I was diagnosed and didn't really have much information on Celiac at the time. (This was about 2 years ago) I worked in an orthopaedic clinic and one of the doctors was nice enough to buy the whole office pizza from Domino's. I figured I deserved one last gluten-filled pizza meal before I officially gave it up - besides what could two pieces of pizza do to me since I'd only been gluten free for 2 days?

    Very stupid mistake.

Within an hour my face was flushing, I felt like I had a horrible flu/fever, and my stomach ached (these are my symptoms of eating gluten). I lived 30 minutes from work, so I had to drive home. I honestly didn't think I was going to make it home because I was so out of it that I almost swerved off the road a couple of times. When I got home, I took my temperature - 102 F. Let's just say I didn't go into work the next day.

Trust me -- as tempting as cheating may sound, it's not worth it! I haven't cheated since!

Thanks all. I feel a little better today, but still only 65% of normal. And I'm behind, but I have a plan in place to get things done.

My headache is killing me. Anyone know what headache medicines are gluten free?

After I googled "Gluten Free drug list", I stumbled across this beauty. Check out this website for a pretty sweet list of gluten-free meds:

    Open Original Shared Link

I'm an Excedrin user, personally, but the list has a portion devoted to migraine headache meds...(that is, if you're looking for migraine medicine -- otherwise check out the rest of the list) including:

    "MIGRAINE HEADACHE MEDICATIONS

    Brand Name Form Manufacturer

    Cafergot Tabs, suppository Novartis (800-526-0175)

    Excedrin Migraine Bristol-Myers Squibb (800-321-1335)

Zomig, Zomig ZMT, nasalspray Astra Zenaca (800-236-9933)"

I tried to space it all out nice and neat, but I'm pretty sure I failed at that! :) Anyway, I hope this kinda helps.

    Feel better!!

  11. Hey Grey --

I go to UW-Madison and see a nurse practitioner at the UW Hospital -- her name is Patrice Kennedy. I've been seeing her for about 2 years now and she does a great job at taking care of me! :) She works under/with (?) Dr Reichelderfer who I believe is the head of the GI department (I'm not 100% certain about that), but he's the guy who gave me my second endoscopy and colonoscopy! He has quite the personality -- in fact, he explained to me how he had to give himself an enema.... Like I said - he's quite interesting!

Anyway, I definitely recommend going through the UW Hospital and Clinics for celiac disease. They are very personable and actually take the time to listen to you and answer questions. They were also the ones who discovered I had mild Crohns (after going to a doctor in Green Bay who said even though there was evidence of Crohn's that it was probably just Celiac.... right).

Anyway, good luck! :) Let me know if you have any other Wisconsin-related questions!

  12. I can definitely empathize with you!! I just finished my third year here at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and my finals week was going well (as well as finals week can go, I guess) until I decided it would be smart to go out to dinner! Halfway through my rice noodles dish at Noodles I found several wheat noodles in my food. Great, huh? And I had a final at 7:45 AM the next morning.

At least the manager was incredibly nice about it. He offered to call his supervisor if I needed to talk (complain) about anything and told me if I ended up going to the hospital to be sure and call. They also gave me a $20 gift card to come back. Ha - we'll see if that happens anytime soon!

But, I just wanted to say that I hope you feel better and managed to survive and do well! :)

    Good luck!

hey guys i was wondering if any one had any gluten-free ideas other than outback steakhouse in northern illinois or southern wisconsin.it would be awesome if anyone could suggest a pizza joint

I know it's not Southeast Wisconsin, but I'm from Madison, WI. You should head over this direction and check out the Silly Yak Bakery. Not only do they have wonderful baked goods (breads, muffins, cakes, cookies, etc), they have frozen gluten-free pizza that you can heat up at home. You can also check out Bunky's Cafe here in Madison (www.bunkyscafe.net) - they have pizza and pasta, I think. I haven't eaten there yet (I'm living on a poor college kid's salary!), but I've heard it's pretty tasty.

    Hope this kinda helps! :)

  14. I live in Wisconsin and have eaten successfully at two Hardee's (one in Oshkosh, WI and the other in Oconto, WI). Both times I got the low-carb burger in a lettuce wrap. Granted, I haven't eaten at Hardee's in about a year, but the last time I was at the Oconto Hardee's, they had a dedicated fryer for fries. I don't think the one in Oshkosh had a dedicated fryer, so apparently they vary by location....

    Hi-

I was wondering if any of the Wisconsinites went to any of the support groups? And if so, how they were/what they were like? (I'm new at this). thx

Hey! I'm a member of the "Madison Area Gluten Intolerance Chapter" (MAGIC). I haven't actually gone to any of the meetings, but they send out monthly newsletters which are pretty awesome. They have recipes, product updates, tips, and medical information. I know the Fox Valley Celiacs also have a newsletter (my mom is a member), so I'd think the rest of the groups in the state would have them too. I definitely recommend it though. And maybe I'll find time to actually go to a meeting! ;)

  16. I'm from Oconto (30 miles north of Green Bay) but am currently going to school at UW-Madison!!

winniepooh--- it says you're from Antigo --- I think the name of the gluten-free bakery that's there is Life Without Wheat (i could be wrong on that), but I know there's a gluten-free bakery in Antigo -- my mom goes there all the time to buy me desserts! :)

    Hello!!!!

I'm a newly Diagnosed Celiac and I was wondering if anyone knew if support groups in the LaCrosse, Wisconsin area??? I live about an hour form LAX but go there often! Please help!!!!

I found the following information about a LAX support group from the website Open Original Shared Link .... This site has a list of all of the other Celiac support groups across the state, if you're interested. I'm from Madison, so I'm not really knowledgable on the LAX group, but I'm pretty sure a lot of the groups across the state stay in touch with each other. The group in Madison is really great! Hope this helps! :)
