ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Mia, I tried to send you a PM but I get a message that I am not allowed to use the messenger feature on this board. Its puzzling since I haven't been informed of any problem with any of my posts nor of my PMs and have had 0% warnings. I noticed the last time or two I tried to send a message that it wouldn't go, but I missed the message that I was not allowed... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

My best sense so far is that staying on my very basic SCD foods is making a difference in my bloating. However, it just tends to build up anyway. I'm still experimenting. I'm kind of wondering about doing just a very nutritious broth 1 day a week or so. I notice if I just do apple juice for one day (I've done this twice preparing for the liver cleanses... -

Mia, maybe the improvement on antibiotic is a clue. What you describe sounds a lot like what happens with lyme. -

Yes, interesting article, Pele. I wonder, would the results of the study have been any better if the patients were following SCD instead of merely gluten-free? Historically, SCD was the first treatment used successfully for celiac according to Elaine. And she questioned the decision to restrict it to only gluten as the problem. Jan, I know what you... -

Good question. Apparently the condition can be both genetic and/or acquired. So I suppose it could come after gluten damage, though I would think it could have multiple etiologies. I'm suspicious it is genetic for me. Because my daughter has many of the sx, and one in particular that really caught my eye: she started getting stretch marks as a child... -

Welcome Rhoger1! I'd stay a minimum of 1 month on your safest SCD foods, and make sure they are the easiest to digest. Very well cooked, etc. At that point I'd retry the SCD goat milk yogurt (NOT purchased yogurt), starting with 1/4 teaspoon and building up if you tolerate that little amount. If you can't handle it, then make some fermented veggies... -

Many of us here don't digest carbohydrates well which is why SCD helps. Here's another cause for such a problem: kryptopyrroluria. I'm getting tested for this in the next month. It could explain a LOT. It would be worth it for all of you to read the symptom list. Remember that you won't have all of the symptoms, just some. Of the long lists of symptoms... -

Interesting comments. I have been reviewing the GAPS site again, because of my persistent problems with bloating (worse the last weeks), and there is an emphasis on animal fats I noticed. I think I am going to try the GAPS intro for a couple of days to see if it helps the bloating. Its SCD compliant, just a slightly different approach. Also, I'm experimenting... -

Could be. But Elaine says it is one of the hardest foods to digest, and I think that is the main problem. Sherry -

Darkhorse, I think that is a pretty common transition. I experienced something very similar. I allowed myself to eat grape juice, jello, and even a teaspoon of honey often those first few days just to make it through. Eventually I also found I didn't feel hungry all the time. Seems important to follow a meal schedule with at least something nutritious... -

It appears my severe bloating problem is either diet or medications. I just did two days of break from medications, while prepping and doing a simple version of liver flush. The first day I just drank homemade apple juice and nothing else. To my surprise, the bloating decreased and I also lost some excess fluid. I thought the fruit/juice might be part... -

That's a good question, Ali. Perhaps the form of magnesium makes a difference. The other thing I wonder, if the magnesium stimulates the intestine in a way that makes it spastic. So that the movements are chaotic and don't serve to move things along. Another thought is that it sometimes takes pretty high doses of magnesium to work. But if you think it... -

Welcome dtgirl! From your description, I'd think the diet would be well worth trying. I think in your case that you'll need to start at a very simple level. When there is a lot of damage, the fiber worsens the C instead of helping. Intestinal motility is compromised. This can be for various reasons. I had a very clear response on the SCD in the... -

Maltodextrin would be a sugar, so illegal. It may or may not be gluten as well. GiProhealth makes a SCD legal probiotic. Kirkman acidophilus is also SCD legal. These are the two I have used. Many probiotics also have FOS and Inulin which are not legal. So its not just the organisms but the other ingredients that have to be considered. -

As I mentioned, I've had severe bloating again and some weight gain (I think it is water retention), so I asked Kim on the SCDinfo group. She said the bloating and gas are by products of the bacteria in the gut, so she thinks my gut ecology is way out of wack, probably secondary to my medication treatments. So I must increase my probiotics. Also she... -

Great post, Pele. Welcome Darkhorse! I hope this proves helpful for you. Some people seem to be able to reintroduce some dairy after a period on SCD. On the www.pecanbread.com site, with kids they sometime start with only a 1/4 tsp of goat milk yogurt and work up. The cravings at the beginning are very common. I had that too. I allowed myself some... -

Clearsky, for me there are many factors in my health problems, so its hard to say how much I have to go. On SCD, I have had improvement with constipation. It also helped a lot with overall energy. It clearly also had a cleansing effect with regard to parasites. I have continued to have some bloating--which has been much worse over the past several weeks... -

Thanks, Pele for checking out about the Welches. Martha, I think extra fruit causes more bloating for me, at least more gas. I seem to be okay with some, so I'm going to try to monitor the amount that works best. One thing, my last testing showed lower levels of good bacteria, so it might be that I don't have enough balance yet enough to handle too... -

I just read on another SCD forum that other people have had trouble with Welches. Someone posted that it is now made from concentrate, and isn't the same juice that Elaine approved of before. I haven't verified that, but just wanted to pass that on. Ali, I'll try to get to posting that recipe a bit later. I think, but am not sure, that it is based... -

I agree that sometimes the fruit needs to be restricted or eaten in a certain way. I just read Dr. Burrascano's newest guidelines for lyme disease. He said that the fruit should be eaten at the end of the meal. I don't think he was considering digestion in that, he was considering not feeding candida for people on antibiotics. So that's just another side... -

Jan someone just mentioned on the SCD group (the one I referred to above) that she heard of a case of severe vomiting and diarrhea that was undiagnosed for a long time. It turned out to be hereditary angioedema. I'm glad you are still seeking for solutions, and especially glad that SCD is reducing the symptoms at least. -

Jan, I am not sure about the symptoms other than that flares on the diet are common especially the first year. My thought is you might ask the SCD official group, the yahoo group. There are people there with various GI issues, that have been on SCD for years, and might know the answer. I'm wondering if you have a concurrent GI issue. I've learned there... -
ARCHIVED Experience With Parasites?
mftnchn replied to mellowyellowmushroom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've absolutely had this experience. I first became aware this was a possibility for celiacs due to compromised gut. I tried some home remedies: a bunch of fresh garlic several times a day, and then two days of fasting and eating pineapple and pumpkin seeds. I saw enough to convince me I did have parasites. I then did a month of herbal treatment... -

Yoekie, one more thing to read about might be pyroluria. Some of your symptoms fit that too. I'm considering that for myself too. SCD has made a huge difference in my intestinal health, though I am still needing additional help to solve my remaining issues. -

What kind of almonds are you eating? Some are processed with gas in the pasteurization process. Some people do better with the blanched. I bought some that are pasteurized with steam only. You can do alternative nuts like hazelnuts, just more spendy. Cashews are also ok however, they are hard to digest so may not be tolerated until later. Sounds...
