ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Protein in diet: I'm actually opposite, I need a higher protein and lower carb diet. We are all so varied, aren't we? I've malabsorbed protein in the past and tested with very low amino acids (results said it appeared I was not eating protein). Also with lyme disease, more protein and less carb is recommended. -

Hi all, I'll never catch up with all the posts so will just jump back in and respond to a few of the latest discussions. I'm SCD 9 months now. Been really busy, but also have a similar experience to what Rinne said with regard to the climate on this forum in recent months. Bouts with constipation on SCD--on another forum, a person on SCD for ... -

I've learned that some people don't handle carrots well, so that could be the issue with the soup. I take prescription digestive enzymes, high doses. But I am noticing now that I have been able to cut back a lot without too much problem. I ran out even for several weeks and was mostly ok. So I know that I am healing on this diet. (7 plus months on... -

Yes, I am concerned about getting rid of it too. I want my husband to get checked too. I highly recommend the Metamatrix intestinal ecology panel--that checks for DNA of parasites. I am sure this would never have been picked up without this test. As celiacs, what I have read is that we are much more prone to parasites. We need to have this thoroughly... -

Hi, I am using Sun Star Organics Oxy-Mag powder. My doc says it is SCD compliant, I'm looking on the bottle but don't see any ingredients listed except magnesium citrate. Its pretty potent. 1/2 tsp is 642 mg of magnesium. I am using a teaspoon at bedtime, and I usually have loose stool in the morning with that. It isn't acidic so isn't too uncomfortable... -

I've been absent for awhile as I'm very very busy. No time to catch up with all the posts, sorry. I've continued to have GI symptoms...on strict SCD since 7/08. From another forum I learned that the first year can be rough with a lot of healing crisis, so hang in there. Remember that it takes 1-2 years to heal the intestines (after we have removed all... -

Excellent description, Mia. I'd only add that celiac causes villi damage, and that means lowered or absent production of certain carb digesting enzymes, lactase, and a couple of others that I forget the names of. Without the enzymes, the carbs are not broken down and then the cascade effect in the lower intestine. -

My post maybe was just lost. The compounding pharmacist said there are certain benefical components included in Armour that they are unable to reproduce when they compound. Open Original Shared Link This pharmacy told me there is another brand that is safe to use that is similar to Armour, and much cheaper than compounding. Sorry I can't recall... -

I've mostly been grinding my own nuts so far. I just got back to the USA so tried a bag of Bob's Red Mill that someone gave me. I didn't care for it too much. I have some from Digestive Wellness to try which Shay highly recommends and is safe. -

Juli, I think the idea of the juice is that monosaccharides get absorbed high in the small intestine, so don't reach the lower areas where the yeast is a major problem. However, the book does say that if you have a big problem with candida the fruit and honey may need to be curbed for awhile. On intro, chicken carrot soup, homemade jello, dry curd... -

Hi Gentleheart, I can't help with the alternate nut flours, but have seen recipes using cashew flour. April recently mentioned making wonderful muffins with walnut flour which her family likes a lot better than the almond flour. Coconut milk yogurt has been made by posters on this thread very successfully and some make their own coconut milk. There... -
Asia food can be a real challenge. South Asian food uses less wheat, and may be a safer option. I live in Northern China most of the time, and it is very difficult to eat out. There are a few dishes that are safer which by nature don't have gluten, but CC is a major issue in Asian food preparation. Almost alll the sauces in my area contain wheat.

ARCHIVED More Results From Enterolab
mftnchn replied to coldnight's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is hard when you don't have a definitive diagnosis. As it seems you know, you still have a chance of being celiac even without the main genes. Gluten is something that is very hard to digest, and when you get leaky gut syndrome, it leaks out into the system and you can get antibodies to it. It might be possible that something else is causing the leaky... -

Welcome, Julie. No problems, 80+ pages is overwhelming. Just jump right in. I have several thoughts about what you are describing. First it could be a long term reaction to gluten; I've read on the board some people have weeks of symptoms. Second, it sounds like your digestion isn't handling too much at least right now. BTVC talks about one... -

Dawn, try pressing down on the top of the flat lids of your canned sauce. If it moves up and down, then it isn't sealed well, and you do need to refrigerate and use up more quickly. If it is solid and doesn't move up and down, you have a good seal and the long water bath would have killed all the bugs adequately, so you should be fine putting it on the... -

I don't knowingly cheat. Also like others have said, the cravings really aren't there. I did buy some blueberries and have been putting a few in my yogurt...and don't do raw yet so that's a stretch. The appie pie craving--yep! I use the almond honey crisp recipe in BTVC and spread it on top of my apple pie filling (with honey, sans starch) and bake... -

SCD has been a big help to me, and I have enough positive changes to not want to go off the diet. However, the healing process is not comfortable! I am finding myself much more sensitive now, and having more bouts of D, instead of always struggling with C. I have more nausea and cramping, and bloating comes and goes (when it comes, I have a soccer ball... -

I read on some of the SCD sources that it was eliminated by Dr. Hass because he found it to be a problem. Elaine was asked why and she just said it wasn't okay and don't keep asking her about it! LOL, I think she got tired of being asked the question. Sometimes Elaine said that in her research about the composition of various things, sometimes the... -

I agree with the others, and it may simply be a digestion problem. On the SCD after removing the illegal foods, it is also important to remove foods you react to, and then wait for awhile before trying them again. We need to give the gut time to heal. -

LOL! Yes, we are happy and lucky...and the many people across the board that have learned about the SCD from your posts are very lucky too! I think it is too bad you aren't allowed to continue to mention SCD elsewhere. -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
mftnchn replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Welcome Gentleheart! Here's my summary of the diet: Restrict all disaccharides and polysaccharides (gut damage reduces digestive enzyme production--we can't break them down; this wreaks havoc on the gut flora and results in continued damaging in spite of gluten-free diet). A legal/illegal list is available online at the BTVC website. Second, start with... -

Mia, it is good to hear from you, and so glad you are doing well! Can you tell me again how you discovered the fructose intolerance? I'm wondering if I need to have that tested as well when I check my malabsorption this next visit to my doctor. Sherry -
ARCHIVED Confused About The "healing Crisis"
mftnchn replied to loxleynew's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This seems to happen at times. I experienced after going gluten-free, and again after going on SCD 15 months later. I also have lyme disease, and the borrelia spirochete bacteria that is the main cause of lyme gives off toxins when it dies in the body and produces a herxheimer reaction. A few bacteria are known to do that. A lot of people have described... -
ARCHIVED Leaky Gut Causes Gluten Intolerance?
mftnchn replied to Yoekie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Sparkle, Yes, it would be good to know what testing has been done for your gluten sensitivity--an allergy test or the testing for celiac? However, if you are not eating gluten (sounds like you are not) then testing for celiac will not be useful as you'd likely have false negatives. I think you might be helped by the SCD. It means Specific Carbohydrate...
