There's a Whole Foods in West Hartford that has a good variety of gluten-free items, so that might be nice to pick up some snacks. Also, I just discovered this store: Open Original Shared Link but I haven't been there yet! I'm going to go this weekend, I'll try to remember to post and let you know how it is. -Em

ARCHIVED Here Is What I Like So Far From Trader Joe's!
ewalton replied to Dolcenotte's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Gluten-free peanut butter cookies, and the lime popsicles. Mmmmmmmmm. The brown rice pasta is great, very much like Tinkyada. They also usually have good tea, and I love their juices. -Emily -
ARCHIVED Oxford Spa - Cambridge, Ma - Harvard Square
ewalton replied to Sterndogg's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I haven't been in about a year, but I found that I had to ask them to change gloves etc. to prevent cross contamination, depending on who was making my sandwich. They said, "oh, you're *that* sensitive, even just a crumb?". So while the sandwiches are great, I have to suggest being very careful in how you order. Maybe they've changed in the last year... -
ARCHIVED Everyday Minerals - Great gluten-free Mineral Make-up!
ewalton replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well...honestly, it didn't. This was about half an hour of lap swimming, though, so maybe for a more casual splash it might hold up better? But there was definitely nothing left afterwards. -Em -
ARCHIVED Everyday Minerals - Great gluten-free Mineral Make-up!

...how about for putting on makeup before going swimming? Not that I've done that....hehe. The MTN is pretty versatile. I'm pretty pale as well- Sandy Fair or Olive fair might be my best shade- but MTN works on me too. I've been surprised at what a range of foundation colors look OK. The hard part is figuring out which one looks best! The... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Cupcakes Now In Boston/cambridge Area
ewalton replied to BostonCeliac's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Hot of the Press was awesome. They don't have anything about "gluten free" posted on the menu as far as I noticed, but if you ask they're happy to make any of the sandwiches gluten-free. They carry a couple of the food-for-life breads and Jillian's rolls and...I think something else.... They don't actually press the gluten-free sandwiches- too much risk... -

ARCHIVED Everyday Minerals - Great gluten-free Mineral Make-up!
ewalton replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I tried it out today, and OMG my skin looked so good! Up close you could really see that I was wearing makeup, though. I tried applying eyeliner wet too, and I really liked that. It's much easier and less powder winds up on my cheeks that way. I....I did order today. I just couldn't wait any more. Now there's gonna be a special tomorrow... -
ARCHIVED Everyday Minerals - Great gluten-free Mineral Make-up!
ewalton replied to Mango04's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ah me too! I can't believe there isn't a new special. I've had a cart full since the 22nd just waiting! I went and looked at a bunch of other mineral makeup companies....but.....they're just not the same. The sites aren't as easy to navigate, and the color descriptions for the foundation just aren't as good. A few of them have only 3 or 4 foundation colors... -
The first doctor I saw about my celiac symptoms: "Maybe you just need a hamburger" (I was vegetarian at the time), "IgA Ttg is the only blood test for celiac", and after I told him that it *wasn't* and told him exactly which tests he should have ran, he handed me a computer printout and told me to "go do your homework and you can call if there's something...

Wow, this cult is so welcoming! How nice One of my favorites that I haven't seem mentioned here is the Morocco eyeshadow used as a liner with some of the brown shades. I love hot chocolate/countryside/morocco I also really like the cypress eyeshadow as a liner, but I haven't found really good highlighter/lid shades to go with it. I think I've just... -

I've been a lurking cult member but decided to speak up. You all got me hooked back around page 10- and I never ever wore makeup before! This is crazy but so much fun. I'm going so crazy over the no-new-special thing! I have a cart full of stuff just *waiting*. My favorite thing has definitely been playing with the eyeshadows- I got the mini eyeshadow... -
I should've know college chemistry wouldn't actually apply to the real world. You're absolutely right. I looked at some of the links you sent, and it looks like it does nearly always derive from wheat, at least in human food products- it's a wheat gluten hydrolysate. Supposedly it can be made gluten-free: Open Original Shared Link There is corn gluten...

Glutamine is one of the amino acids (building blocks of proteins- see Open Original Shared Link and isn't actually related to gluten, even though they sound similar. "peptide bonded" is also a bit of a confusing phrase. A "peptide bond" is the way 2 amino acids stick together. So peptide bonded glutamine just means "we added extra glutamine, and it's attached...

ARCHIVED Tastings In Pittsford Ny
ewalton replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I've been to Tastings twice pre-diagnosis, and wow. Awesome, awesome restaurant. I'm certainly not aware of anything else like it in Western NY (except maybe in Ithaca). They did a great job of handling our table last time I was there- one soy-free halal, one halal, one kosher-vegetarian, one no-meat-except-fish, and two people who eat everything ... -
I tried making chebe-type bread with just tapioca flour, and it definitely did not work! The dough never turned elastic, it just made a super-viscous fluid. It was very strange. If you do come across a recipe for making your own chebe mix, please let me know. This naan recipe sounds super-good, I'll have to try it as soon as I get more chebe mix! ...

For the first six months or so of being gluten-free I had some CRAZY sugar cravings- like I could eat an entire huge bag of m&ms (the bags that are a pound or so) in 24 hours. I was never like that before I went gluten-free. After six months it started calming down, and after a year gluten-free it pretty much disappeared. Now (18 months gluten-free...

ARCHIVED Chebe-like Bread Without The Mix?
ewalton posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi, So, I like using the chebe all-purpose mix to make wrappers for samosa/calzones/etc. but I don't like spending so much on each little bag of mix! I have tapioca flour from an asian grocer. Does anyone have a recipe for making a chebe-like bread from tapioca flour instead of the mix? -Emily -
Hi, I'm headed to a conference in Lyon this August and I'm a bit worried about eating gluten-free. I'm planning on bringing a ton of Lara bars, rice crackers, peanut butter, etc. but I was wondering if anyone had experience eating out in the region. I've got the Triumph dining cards (I don't speak french), but I've had mixed luck with those here...

Takeout chinese. Steamed dumplings, general tso's chicken, beef with scallions- and you can just go and order it without having to explain for 5 minutes and provide written explanation in multiple languages. And homemade challah- I miss kneading dough! Chebe is as close as I get these days.... Possibly also homemade fresh pasta, but gluten-free gnocchi...

Yes- McKay's Public House! I poked around trying to find the name and couldn't find it, but they were fabulous as well. I think I had duck there too, Char I ate there 3 times during the week I was in Bar Harbor, and everything we ordered was excellent. Even all of the appetizers ordered by our table came with gluten-containing garnishes on the side...

ARCHIVED Bali Spice Sweet Soy Sauce?
ewalton replied to New Mama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have some of this too. I've used it a couple times without any apparent ill effects but I wish I knew for sure too. It's good for making pad see ew. Maybe over the weekend when I have free cell minutes I'll try calling their contact number. -Em -
It's not authentic at all, but I use Chebe mix sometimes to make "samosas" - wrap the filling up like a turnover and then bake. If anyone has suggestions for something that would be flakier more like a real samosa, I'd love to see that too!

This was the most awesome place: Open Original Shared Link The owner's son has celiac, so they're very aware of what's necessary and which menu items are OK. It's dinner only, and you have to make a reservation because they fill up fast. 2cats cafe was also very accomodating, and I ate there twice last summer for brunch with no ill effects ...
