  1. I'm sorry you're going through that. I went to Japan 2 years ago and felt like I could never eat out at all, especially since I didn't speak the language. I was there for 2 weeks and hated leaving the apartment, which doesn't make for the best tourist experience. Maybe there is someone on the board who is in Korea or from there that can help. But try not to get discouraged!! If your husband wants to go out, cook something for yourself before or after and just get a drink while your out. That's what I do here, I'm not very trusting of places in the US and I can communicate effecitively here. Hopefully you'll have a better next few days, but you're not alone!!

  2. I'm guessing that very few homeless Celiacs have been diagnosed. The news stories suggest most people living on the streets have mental illness problems, drug and alcohol abuse problems, and don't always avail themselves of indigent health care services. Some are in and out of jail. They live in high-risk crime and abuse environments.

Throw in being exposed to the elements more, and an inferior or inconsistant diet, and it's a pretty good bet that many are in poor physical health.

Daily life is most likely more about survival (literally), and less about food intolerances, than those of us more fortunate.

    best regards, lm

which is what I was basically trying to say but apparently didn't do a very good job!

  3. I'm not trying to be insensitive here....but if you're homeless do you really care about the fact that you're a celiac. I mean if you're homeless...wouldn't you be more concerned with just eating in general...I don't know. I thought about this once before when I was visiting Atlanta and saw a bunch of homeless people. I just think if I was homeless...I'd probably worry about just eating in general. I think when y ou're homeless, your body might just react a lot different...I imagine when you're homeless you just learn to adjust and your body is a lot different

  4. I've been on Yasmin for 5 years and when they automatically switched me over...I refused and pay the higher amount for the Yasmin. I figure, I'm not looking to switch from something that works until I speak directly with my doctor about it. Yasmin is going 100% generic but it'll take about a year for that to go full cycle. When I asked my pharmacist about Ocella he said "yes its gluten free" without even looking it up, so I didn't trust him. I see my gyno in March and will discuss my options with her. Since you have to take birth control daily, I just fell like we need be be 100% sure about a product otherwise we'll be questioning EVERYTHING we eat or do, so I'd rather pay more now and benefit later!!

  5. I'm removing the patch myself but I don't put my hands in my mouth after, or any where near my face. I go straight to the restroom and wash my hands and then use hand sanitizer after. I don't ever really have my hands in my mouth...I don't bite my nails or anything like that. I've been going over in my head what it could possibly be and I just can't come up with anything other than the medicine...

Do you think I should try it once more next week and see the reaction or just stop while I'm ahead?

Thanks for helping try to figure this out everyone!

  6. I got diagnosed my junior year of college as well and had a similar situation. The food staff went above and beyond but even that was limited and you can only eat fruits and salad for so long. I went to my director of res. life and asked if we could work out a special meal plan...that didn't take me off of it completley, because I certainly couldn't afford that, but was less expensive than the other since I wouldn't eat the full cost for 3 meals. I've often found that most colleges and universities will be willing to work with you as best as possible, they often make acceptions if you go about it in the proper way. I know it's frustrating but good luck!

  7. Is there any way you can get sick based on certain medicines that are soaked in through the skin? For example, I'm in physical therapy for my knee and my therapist, once a week for the 3rd week now, uses a patch that you put a medication on to help inflammation and then use electro-stimulus to penetrate the aggrevated area...the medicine is soaked in through your skin. After each time that I do this, later in the day...my stomach is horrible. Like I ate something that I cannot have and I couldn't for the life of me figure it out. I guess what got me thinking is the last time I got my pupils dialated at the eye doctor, my stomach went bazerk and I hadn't eaten anything else. I know people are going to say "check your diet and what you ate" but I don't eat a whole lot...and what I do eat, is 100% no mistake gluten free. For example today I've only had 2 eggs, gluten free toast with water and an apple. I have horrible eating habits. Sometimes I just find that its easier not to eat than to risk eating out.

Anyway, could this be possible? That my reaction is related to those things? Or is it just an odd coincidence

  8. Does anyone know if Centrium or if any other vitamins are gluten free? I need to start putting myself on some vitamins because I'm just not bouncing back as quickly as I need to be and my mother (the nutritionist) has been nagging me for years about getting on a good vitamin regiment. You'd think by the time you're grown up the mother's would calm down!! haha :P

  9. I've lived in Atlanta for years.....I'm not really sure it's right to say that the city is full of "creeps, prostitutes, and who knows what", a lot of the city is pedestrian friendly AND safe, obviouslys it's a big city so you're going to have the normal big city issues....but I never have felt unsafe here. There are more places in the city than you realize, check this list out

Chow Baby is great, so is Hot Stix if you like stir fry. PF Changs and Wildfire are at the Perimeter Mall. Maggiano's in Buckhead and Blue Ridge Grill in Buckhead as well as the Atlanta Fish Market all have gluten free menus. Whole Foods, Kroger and Publix all have gluten free options. Ecco on 7th Street has some great gluten-free options, just talk to the person when you make a reservation. Gordon Biersch also can accomodate. A place called Metro Fresh on Monroe Ave is a great option as well.

Look at that list and you'll see that there are PLENTY of options in the city as well as around it. Good luck and if you need anything please let me know! I stay in Midtown.

  10. yes a date with a man.....shocking, I know. Usually no one likes that "i'm a freak about food otherwise I'll get sick conversation" but so far so good....

thanks for the help so far, and pushing me to y'alls blogs. Cornish game hens sounds pricey......delicious, but pricey. I'm on a strict budget here people :)

  11. Hey guys-

I have a lot of recipes and have used them often but I'm in a new situation with a guy who doesn't know a whole lot about my disease and I want to cook for him on Saturday but want something special that will really impress him and make him realize that just because I can't eat a lot of things....the stuff we can eat CAN be normal and delicious!

I was wondering if anyone had a fun recipe that they've used for their "date nights" that you could post on here to help!

    Thanks!

  12. Just because one says "best regards" does not mean that you mean well in what you have said. I feel that this post has gotten slightly ridiculous and now instead of educating people or allowing people to share their experience, others are poking fun at those people who have attempted to drink light beer calling it a "research project" in the most sarcastic manner. It really does make people not want to post things on this site if they're going to be subject to ridicule and judgements.
