  1. OK, i thought about putting this on a different board, but seeing as the only people that can relate are the "parents of kids or babies with celiac disease" here i am. Our 3 year old (7-23-04) is recently diagnosed with celiac (7-1-07). I asked her GI specialist about my husband and i getting tested, and his "theory" on the whole thing was- you both need...
  2. i'm usually all for the endoscopy. I really am. Not in your case. I'm all for scoping a three year old, but 13 months is EXTREMELY young. I honestly believe the test will be inconclusive. There is NO way that a baby could have intestinal damage (or that they would biopsy the exact place that he does) after two months of a little macaroni and spaghetti-o's...
  3. agreed with everyone, celiac testing is extremely unreliable. I also dont feed my babies any of the top allergens (wheat, dairy, soy, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts or treenuts) before one. The last 4 i listed my kiddos allergist recommends waiting until 3. You might consider allergy testing, i've seen many kiddos that are allergic to wheat, rye and barley...
  4. I did the endoscopy on my 3 year old, because i didnt think i would be able to stick to the gluten free diet 100% without solid proof. In your case you are already committing to the gluten free diet, so it wouldnt be so big of a lifestyle change for you. I would probably just try the gluten free diet. I don't think that's what your question was though. In...
  5. Thanks for the replies ladies! It's great to hear how other mom's handle the same situation. Makes me feel a little less crazy Thanks again ya'll!!!
  6. OK, protective is probably the wrong word, but for lack of a better one, there it is! What i mean is, not that any of you let your kiddos eat gluten, but how careful are you to prevent it? Are you okay with food produced on equipment that produces gluten? Made in a facility with gluten? What about restaurants, do you even let them eat things that should be...
  7. i have a 3 year old that is diagnosed with celiac. I also have a 9 month old. Bayleigh's gi dr told us to wait until 12 months to introduce the baby to gluten, and blood test him at 18 months. Hope that helps! good luck!
  8. Agreed with happygirl! Just wanted to add that My GI dr. said on my 9 month old that we'll wait until he's 12 months, introduce gluten and then test him at 18 months. So i'm assuming that it's necessary for your one year old to be on gluten for atleast 6 months. Also he told me that celiac disease can just show up on a family member without any previous history...
  9. sorry i forgot to answer this part. The celiac blood panel is a blood test where they take blood, send it off to a lab, and they often (especially in young children) produce false negatives. This blood test is generally accepted and respected by doctors, although alot of doctors still follow up with an endoscopy and biopsy. If by "home tst" you mean the stool...
  10. i dunno about all that. My dr. told me that testing my nine month old would be pointless. Although... he has never had gluten or any other food directly. He is exclusively breastfed. My pediatrician told me that I can start him on gluten at 12 months, and we will bloodtest him at 18 months. So I am assuming that a good six months is needed in kiddos this...
  11. sorry. that really sucks. it sounds like you're doing everything right. Do you have a safe snack box in her classroom? maybe that would help hold her over just in case she forgets her lunch! good luck!
  12. it's 20 days. go for it. my first thought however was that by next year the teacher would no how to handle it. my biggest fear on that is:::: What if that child's mom is not as educated as she should be, and not as strict with the gluten free diet? what if the tacher has it in her head that she doesnt have to wash the tables after snack, or play-doh is okay...
  13. The best advice i can give you is for you to relax and act like it's not a big deal. My 3 year old had to get a shot on her third birthday, and her dr. told me to sit down and relax and she would too. he was right. when she had to have her blood taken for the celiac panel i just tried to stay calm and talk to her about how we were almost done, and we would...
  14. just wanted to agree with crittermom... from your original post it sounds like he was gluten free when you had the celiac blood panel. It will give a false negative, if you're already gluten free!!! good luck!
  15. thank you all for your info!!! She also has an allergy to zithromax, although from what i've seen its usually prescribed for sinus/tonsil infections so i cant imagine it being used in a medical emergency, but better safe than sorry!! I think i'll go ahead with it, because she is on daily medication for her asthma, and her allergist said it's very important...
  16. hi YES try it!!! tinkyada pasta, we like the shells... make macaroni and cheese, just add butter, grated cheese and sour cream kinnikinnick breads for sandwiches kinnikinnick also makes individual size pizza crusts, just add pizza sauce, mozzerella and whatever else! glutino makes ritz like crackers, pretzels etc. enjoy life bars... caramel apple and...
  17. thanks everyone!!!!
  18. i was thinking the same thing! thanks for the advice! anyone else?
  19. forgive me if this has already been covered... what do you guys think about medicalert bracelets? my three year old has celiac and asthma. necessary or no? thanks guys!!!
  20. just jumping in the conversation... but yay breastfeeding!!! and also it is a problem if you are on the pill... however, they have pills for breastfeeding women they call them POPS. ask your ob/gyn for a prescription, but im not sure i would rely on them, especially in your situation
  21. i would probably buy a gluten free flour blend, because i think those do the most like wheat flour... or you can make one... 3 cups garbanzo/fava bean flour 2 cups potato starch 2 cups cornstarch 1 cup tapioca flour 1 cup sorghum flour (obviously that makes 9 cups, if you need less, reduce recipe) I don't know if id let my kiddo go, unless...
  22. lays stax are gluten-free and they come individually packaged! just thought id add that!!! my 3 year old loves them.
  23. from what ive read on here elmers glue is safe, as well as the glue sticks i just so happened to buy (i cant remember the brand name right now) so i would assume you dont have to worry about glue. PLAY-DOH is not gluten free. I know she probably wouldnt eat it at 4, my three year old wouldnt. Make sure you either tell her teacher she must wash her hands after...
  24. i hear people on here talking about stool testing through entrolab i think its called. as far as getting a diagnosis from a dr, from what i hear it sounds like dr's dont acknowledge entrolab testing. we had a blood test that my daughters allergist performed, that he read as positive and diagnosed my 3 year old with celiac. when i took her to her g.i. specialist...
