  1. I am DQ1 (but don't have the "real" celiac genes DQ2/DQ8) and I agree - there is a spectrum and the research is not complete. Articles like this are really helpful - and it's so timely for me that you post this now, since I'm just getting my DNA test back. I don't understand the logic behind limiting the label "celiac" to such specific requirements like...
  2. nora_n - I read the article "Gluten sensitivity as a neurological illness" by the author you mentioned, Hadjivassiliou, and I have to thank you enormously for the reference. I'm surprised, frankly, that my GI doctor did not recognize the positive DQ1 typing that my tests show as a positive result for my diagnosis - and am very relieved to know that my neurological...
  3. Thanks everyone for your helpful answers. I admit I was a bit excited that maybe I could have a slice of pizza again if I really wanted one, but the funny thing is that I now see pastries and breads and they look like poison to me. I'm not sure if I'll have the stomach ;-) to dare eat pizza again! But what I'd like to know is whether gluten just gives...
  4. Three months ago I tried out a gluten free diet and it resolved a lifetime of issues. My GP took a blood sample and I didn't have the celiac antibodies, but I knew the test might not be accurate and he said he still thought I was celiac. Still, the diet became more difficult and I am now super sensitive to smaller traces of gluten. I have heart palpitations...
  5. NewCeliac, all of your symptoms are familiar to me, although I think many of yours are more progressed. I know symptoms can vary, but I have had the achey joints, the sleeplessness followed by days on end that I can't get myself out of bed, gas that's pronounced in the evening (just in time for social events!)... hang in there, you will feel better soon...
  6. I have to agree, though, with whoever said that it seems pointless to make a "gluten-free" product like pancakes, which is probably not going to be eaten by non-celiacs, and then to manufacture it shared with wheat. Trader Joe's is so conscientious about a lot of other things, so I'm surprised that they would not see the irony there.
  7. I'm sorry but I have to disagree with becoming completely discouraged and giving up on dining out. I have worked in kitchens in the past and I know how they can be not only disorganized but just plain unsanitary. But there are many kinds of restaurants out there - it's probably worth paying an extra $20 per table to go to a restaurant where the chef and...
  8. I had one of my first post-diagnosis gluten reactions to a serving of Trader Joe's Carrot and Ginger Soup. I was so confused because I had made such an effort to be gluten free, and on top of that my newly gluten-free GI system reacted much worse than I was used to. It made me distrust anything manufactured on equipment shared with wheat. It was a major...
  9. What's great about the ad, though, is that even those who do not need to be gluten-free might choose Boar's Head instead of some other meat, just in case they end up catering to someone with celiac or gluten intolerance. And if other producers start losing customers to the "just in case" phenomenon, maybe they'll go gluten-free too!
  10. I agree that the personal lists of products are really helpful, especially for things like soy sauce, etc, that family members can look at for easy reference. I just think we should not have to list everything under the sun just so we can eat like a normal person - I mean, Ice Cream?! Cold cut ham?! And things like Vitamin supplements and Yogurts should...
  11. As I understand it, this has been enacted and should be in force, and food manufacturers should now have to disclose whether their products contain one of the 8 "major" allergens (good luck to those allergic to anything else). But from what I can tell, there is little effort to comply with this aside from manufacturers who already cared about allergens,...
  12. If others have heard of it, have any of you found it to be safe? I just had some unfamiliar blended yogurt (but the ingredients SEEMED fine) and a new prescription for folate containing Maltodextrine and vegetable magnesium stearate, among other ingredients. One of the two, can't tell which, just made me sick. Any guesses? Not sure how to react if the...
  13. It's so helpful to hear all the different ways that everyone has learned to deal with this... it's true that this forum is so valuable to keep from going crazy, or thinking that I am! I love the poison ivy quote - so true, how much would anyone be willing to eat? I know that after that imitation crab bite I had last weekend, I'm not willing to eat one iota...
  14. I have been gluten free (with a few setbacks) for one month, and I'm getting used to the diet but have come across a number of people who are unwilling to help or sympathize. I can relate to the attitude, because until now I've been very skeptical of people who claim to have allergies. So when I request a different dish or am slipped some imitation crab...
