  1. So you had to have either: -- a positive blood test with a positive biopsy, or -- a positive blood test with certified American Celiac genes (DQ2 or DQ8). Those who tested negative on the blood test but had completely flattened villi were not counted. Those who tested positive on the blood test but didn't have "official" Celiac genes (those recognized...
  2. She was quite deficient, and the ped (an excellent, open-minded doc) said it helps with focus and attention. My understanding is, any excess is excreted through urine, so there's no risk of overdosing. We each take three 2,000 mcg lozenges a day. I notice when I miss more than one day of it -- I'm less energetic and less focused. I'd definitely give...
  3. We use Perque activated B-12 guard. It's not specifically for kids, but my DD's developmental pediatrician recommended it and she loves it (me too). It's got a really nice grape-ish flavor.
  4. EBsMom, no kidding -- my friends have said that to me too. And yes, not EVERY problem is related to gluten -- but so, so many are. Like, the cold my daughter just had -- obviously not CAUSED by gluten, but ... her immune system gets compromised when she gets glutened, and sometimes she gets sick then. But you're right -- I'm starting to get a bit unmotivated...
  5. 'Course, I have to say that I've encouraged many of these people (and others, including complete strangers) to get testing/try going gluten-free, and with just one exception, no one has taken me seriously <sigh>. I'm sure there are people out there who *aren't* adversely affected by gluten, but I'm beginning to think we gluten-intolerant are the majority...
  6. Maybe this is old hat to some of you, but it's absolutely amazing to me. I look around at my closest friends and family members (I'm adopted, so no genetic relations except for my DD, who is definitely gluten-sensitive like me), and all I see is ... health disorders that maybe, could be, probably are related to gluten intolerance. Just off the top of my...
  7. I second ravenwoodglass, emphatically. My six-year-old daughter is DQ3,3, Subtype 7,7. DQ7 isn't considered a Celiac gene in the U.S. but is considered to be one elsewhere. My daughter didn't present as a classic Celiac in the least, but the gluten-free diet gave her her life back (and it gave me mine back too, BTW). It sounds as if your child has two...
  8. Sorry, should have said $39 A DAY. Shouldn't type in a rush ...
  9. Hi Mary, Don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but: You might consider the Disney Dining Package (if you're staying on property, which I think you said you are). Disney is BY FAR the most Celiac-friendly place I've ever been in this country, and I suspect Kara will be much, much safer (and much happier) if you stay in Disney restaurants. The package...
  10. LOVE the rat poison analogy! I think a problem I'm having with my two friends is that I didn't go absolutely gluten-free instantly -- it's been more of a process that's taken several years (one I'll detail in the intro thread I swear I'll write soon!). And they never really realized gluten's full effects on me. So they haven't always been as supportive...
  11. Thanks, Barb! Part of the problem is I'm self-diagnosed. I had a long, long talk this morning with my best friend (the salad-maker in the story), and he told me that part of the problem he's having with all this is that I refuse to see a physician about this or to rule out any other problem. I have tremendous distrust of the medical profession (and he's well...
  12. Hey Centra, Thank you so much for your reply. I had a couple of thoughts when reading it. The first was, they (there were three friends there, but really only two -- my two closest friends in this town -- taking part) weren't so much ragging on me or mocking me. They were frustrated and angry with me because they thought they saw an obvious solution...
  13. Yup, that's what I need -- a quiet night out without an inquisition. Unfortunately, it would be alone -- these are pretty much my best friends. You know, if I really thought I could change the world, I'd jump right in. The problem is, I don't think it's possible. I can't even change my friends' minds -- I've tried to persuade two of the three who were...
  14. Hi folks, This is my first post, even though I've been lurking for awhile (a pretty long while, actually). I've wanted to post an intro with the story of how I wound up gluten-free (and will soon), but I have a different story and a question for all of you and didn't want to wait until I had time to write the intro. So, here goes: I wound up going...
