  1. Well, here's my situation in a nutshell. . .I've had various symptoms for at least 20 years (painful bloating/gas, constipation, fatigue, occasional numbness in fingers and toes, joint pain, constant acne that has scarred my back and neck, and heaven knows what else.) Doctors have been little help. No one really took me seriously. Ten years ago, I cut...
  2. When we say "processesed," we mean any of the steps a food goes through to get to market. This includes the making of the food and the packaging of the food. In making the food, a small amount of a gluten ingredient could be added to change the flavor or texture of the food. In packaging the food, a small amount of a gluten ingredient could be used to...
  3. Here is a quote from a forum at www.celiac.com/blogs/6/Nampa-Boise-Idaho.html "Yes, there is a celiac support group that meets , like every other month in Meridian at St. Lukes. Jakes Gluten Free store is where we found out about a group. 322-5935. also, Cliff's in Caldwell sell gluten free & posted a letter from the support group. My husband been...
  4. Are you, by chance, from Eastern Idaho? Just curious. I was just thinking that I could use someone to talk/rant to who actually knows what I'm dealing with. The links that happygirl posted list support groups in a few different parts of the state. THANKS HAPPYGIRL! I just viewed another thread on this forum that mentioned some gluten-free businesses...
  5. I can tell from your posts that you know in your heart that you need to change your diet, but you are looking for a loophole because you aren't sure you can do it. YOU CAN DO THIS, and your life will be better for it. That said, it is an enormous pain in the *** at first. I went gluten-free 5 months ago. I thought for sure that by now, I'd have it down...
  6. I think Debmidge nailed this one. The #3 type people will counter any argument that you could possibly come up with. The best way that I have found to deal with these people is to explain once, and then resort to "because I don't want to" as a response. Most people don't know how to counter that. Sadly, my in-laws are type #4. They keep inviting us over...
  7. I think you really need to break down and get tested so that your family will take you seriously. I understand why you haven't done it yet--I haven't either. I just can't bear to have another doctor pat me on the head and tell me I'm fine. I live in a VERY paternalistic community, and for the last 16 years I have struggled to get a doctor to take me seriously...
  8. I'm struggling with this as well. I am the only celiac in the family, and I posted a similar thread a few weeks ago. Since then I have made a few changes to my kitchen, although we are not totally gluten-free. My kids are very messy, so I have eliminated everything crumbly. No bread (this was the BIG one we struggled with), crackers, cakes, granola bars...
  9. First, about the apple. . .I find that when I eat raw fruit--especially apples or citrus--on an empty (or nearly empty) stomach, that I'm tied up in cramps almost immediately. But if I eat it with a good cushion of something else, no problems. I thought it might be the acid in the fruit, but who knows. You might want to try eating one at the end of a meal...
  10. Thanks for all the ideas. I really didn't want to tackle this, because I thought I didn't have the time to reinvent the snack/sack lunches. I know I'm in a rut, but it's SOOO nice when the kids can just feed themselves. One of the posts made me realize that I'm spending too much time worrying about their messes and wondering what the heck made me break...
  11. Temptation is not the problem. I've spent the last 10 years trying to figure out what foods made me feel terrible. Now that I finally have an answer, the pizza and brownies lead to a brief "pity party" but no real urge to cheat. The big problem is that my kids' (ages 12, 9, and 7) absolute favorite lunch or snack is peanut butter sandwiches. They have...
  12. I have been on a gluten-free diet for 4 months, and my bloating has disappeared. Although my skin is much, much better, I can't seem to completely clear it up. I'm sure cross-contamination is to blame, but I don't know whether to blame the products that I buy or the messes that my children make. (It is probably some of both.) Is it possible to still have...
