  1. My son is 8 and has been gluten free since his mid-December dx of Celiac. He had a very bad afternoon with 11 diarhea bms in a six hour period. Most were green and a lot looked like they had sand in them. Other than having Celiac, he is also autistic and has limited communication skills so he can't really help me figure out what is going on. I'm trying...
  2. This is such fun. My biggest goof is still a cake a baked for my mom's birthday when I was in high school. I was in a hurry to do it as a surprise for her while she was out of the house. I grabbed the wrong bottle from the cupboard and put in Lestoil (cleaner) instead of vegetable oil. When I proudly served the cake, my parents commented politely on...
  3. My kids are on IEP's instead of 504's. I think with either IEP or 504, a letter from the doctor stating that your daughter requires a gluten-free diet as well as gluten-free school supplies should be sufficient. I don't think the school will look at the diagnosis as much as the letter from the doctor. I personally wouldn't do extra testing just for school...
  4. My 8 year old son's growth since going gluten free in mid-December has been phenomenal. He was a very large baby-- 9 lb 9 1/2 oz, 22 inches. Sometime between age 2-4 his growth stagnated. He did grow but very, very slowly. He could wear the same clothes for 3-4 years. At the beginning of this school year, he was still wearing size 4 or 5 pants. Sunday...
  5. My eight year old son was dx celiac and began the gluten-free diet in mid-December. At that time, he was quite thin, rather short, and very pale. The diet has definitely been confirmation of the dx. After very slow growth over the past 3-4 years, he seems to be making up for that in record time. He has gone from wearing size 4-5 pants to a size 7. This...
  6. Lori, I will get easier. My son is 8 and has been gluten free for almost 2 months. We still have a lot of learning to do but are getting some things figured out. These aren't the most well rounded choices but my son's not good with his fruits & veggies and here are some things we have liked: The Chebe pizza crust mix is expensive but quite...
  7. Thank you! We used a Pamela's mix and ended up with the Pillsbury Frosting. It tasted very good. Marsha
  8. My son will be 8 on Sunday and we will be celebrating his birthday this weekend with my parents and next weekend as a family in a hotel with a pool. Does anyone have ideas for particularly good chocolate cakes, either by mix or recipe? I think I have a couple options but haven't tried any yet and would love to hear what has worked well. We need it to be...
  9. My son's helper at church is also working on switching his Sunday school class to snacks that everyone can have. He is 7 and his aide (he is also severely autistic) had the kids think about ideas. One thing the kids mentioned is fruit--not as cheap as the goldfish or as convenient esp. with toddlers when a grown-up would have to cut it up. I think they...
  10. My son has been gluten-free for a month now. We're starting to get the basics down and I'm ready to look into if any more gluten is hiding in our lives. Does anyone know if Suave kids 2 in 1 shampoos and/or body washes are safe? I know there are some expensive brands like Burt's Bees that are safe but I really need to stick with something cheap. My...
  11. Thank you for your replies! My gut feeling was that I needed to say "thanks but no thanks" to offer of the loan of her bread machine but I wasn't sure if I was being too paranoid. Marsha
  12. Hi. We are very new to Gluten-free living. My son was dx celiac last week. My mother lent me her bread machine to see if I could get my son to eat any of the homemade gluten-free breads before I bought a new bread machine. My mother is an immaculate housekeeper and really cleans things well. How high is the risk of cross contamination if I use her bread...
  13. Thanks for your insight & everyone elses. I've been a little slow to get back. This week has been overwhelming. My son not only got his celiac disease dx, he also picked up some salmonella poisioning and had a high fever and bloody diahrea. It's hard to know how much he's avoiding food because he's mad about the changes and how much he's avoiding...
  14. Hi. My 7-y-o son who also has autism had a scope Friday with the dx of celiac disease confirmed Tuesday. He was very ill and on clear liquids only most of the time in between (high fever, bloody diahrea, etc) so we decided to reintroduce only gluten-free foods. I figured after going a few days without anything the transition might be a bit easier. I have...
