ARCHIVED Larger Child Diagnosed With Celiac?
mmcdaniels posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My niece is having some serious digestive issues and will be scoped to check for Celiac next week. She is a very tall child and is also obese. My son was quite the other extreme when he was diagnosed. He was 8 and wore a size 5. Have others had a larger childer diagnosed with Celiac? -
ARCHIVED Can I Vent For A Second?
mmcdaniels replied to dkelm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would ask my husband if he wanted to hold the baby or clean up the puke. I frequently point out that there are two things that need done immediately by giving him his choice of jobs. My husband is usually helpful when I ask but frequently too clueless to offer without being asked. -
ARCHIVED Growth Spurts After Going gluten-free?
mmcdaniels replied to kbidarch's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son is 10 and diagnosed when he was 8. In the first 6 months on a gluten free diet he went from a size 5/5T to a size 10. Previously, he wore a 4T at age 2 and was still in a 5 at age 8. He is now a little small for his age but not significantly. -
ARCHIVED Modifying Recipes To Omit Dairy
mmcdaniels posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a couple Gluten Free pantry chocolate chocolate chip cookies & cake mix. The mix itself is gluten-free and dairy free but call for 5 T butter, 2 eggs, 2 t vanilla. Any suggestions on subs for the butter? My son can't handle dairy and I'd love to bake him a batch of cookies today. Thanks for any suggestions! -
ARCHIVED Son Just Diagnosed With Celiac Disease
mmcdaniels replied to Mommy2Many's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
A couple thoughts I had was how does your son feel about mom coming in every day with his lunch? My son is 9 and I send his lunch to school in his backpack. If it needs warmed up, someone does that for him. At your son's age I would ask if he would be allowed to microwave his lunch himself since cool food options are somewhat limited. At first I tried... -
ARCHIVED School Cookbook; Class Projects
mmcdaniels posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I got the following message from my son's teacher for next year who does a lot of teamwork with his current teacher: "We are going to start working on our class cookbook very soon. With this, we will be doing some cooking projects. I was wondering if you might be able to go ahead and send in some recipes for us so that I can plan ahead - maybe cookie recipes... -
We are traveling there for a week at the end of March. It will be a low-budget trip and we'll be able to bring some foods from home and do most of our cooking in the house we'll be staying in. Any information on restaurants that do well with special diets or health food stores would be appreciated. My son is Gluten-free Casein-free and mostly soy free...

Our experience at church has been mostly very positive. It has helped tremendously that the special needs ministry director volunteer who works closely with my son and all his volunteers also has Celiac and has become a good friend. He has his own snacks, given by someone with understanding of the issues. Now and then there is a special food reward in...

ARCHIVED Green Poop
mmcdaniels replied to BemLmom3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For my son green poop is usually a sign that his system is off so I would bring it up. When Josh's system is off, we see runny neon green poop. I think there is often a cross contanimation issue going on but sometimes I've felt like everything has been done right and we've still had green poop. Was she checked for impaction? When my son was first diagnosed... -
ARCHIVED Hay Ride
mmcdaniels replied to SAHM2one's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you for posting that question. For some reason, I never associated gluten with hay rides. Thanks for giving me another thing to consider. -
ARCHIVED Class Halloween Party
mmcdaniels replied to mmcdaniels's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you for the ideas and support. Great idea to use separate ice creams--I was planning to bring 2 anyway. I think I'll also take you up on the big portion, especially since I'm sure I'll be confiscating most of his Halloween treats. He's allergic to peanuts too so unless I'm sure it's gluten and peanut free he doesn't get them. -
ARCHIVED Class Halloween Party
mmcdaniels posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sure lots of you have dealt with this but I would love some ideas. I am one of the 2 room parents for my son's class which is great because it does allow me to protect him from unsafe foods. The other room parent is not willing to really even consider making things safe for Josh and I'm getting very frustrated. She suggested a Sundae bar with waffle... -
ARCHIVED I Feel Like I Have Failed My Son
mmcdaniels replied to LIZARD's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Lizard, What few foods does your son eat well? Maybe we can help you with some gluten-free alternatives. My son is 8 and was just dx in December (which makes me feel foolish, but at least we're on track now.) He also is very picky and implementing the diet has been easier than I thought. Some favorites are: Chicken tenders made by cutting up chicken... -
ARCHIVED I Need Gfcf Recipe Chicken Nuggets Or Tenders
mmcdaniels replied to richieheleng's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A lot of recipes call for a corn-based breading which my son does not like. He likes them dipped in egg, then crushed Lay's Potato Chips, then baked in the oven. They come out pretty tasty but don't win any awards for being low fat. -
ARCHIVED What Were Your Child's Symptoms?
mmcdaniels replied to Tajsa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son wasn't dx until he was 7 but the problem was evident much earlier. He was a very large baby -- 9lb 9 1/2 oz. At 3 years old, he wore a size 4. At 7 years old he wore a size 5. So basically, there was little growth in 4 years. He had very unusual bowel habits. There was a small bm in every diaper changed for years but almost never a complete bm... -
ARCHIVED Tips For A Mixed Kitchen
mmcdaniels replied to Breila's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was having a lot of trouble with hubby cross contaminating the silverware drawer by touching a gluten item then reaching into the drawer. I finally took a couple sets of silverware and put it in a ziploc baggie so I wouldn't constantly have to worry about whether or not it was safe. That has helped me be less stressed out. I haven't let hubby off the... -
ARCHIVED Milk... What To Do
mmcdaniels replied to Aleshia's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We've been gluten free since December. When we still allowed my son to drink milk he had a very bright green poop very soon after drinking the milk. He seems okay with occassional cheese but I really do try to limit dairy. This summer I'll experiment by taking out all dairy and seeing if it makes a difference. I'm hoping we can keep our Annie's rice pasta... -
ARCHIVED Fast Food Choices?
mmcdaniels replied to todzwife's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have found that even chains with safe items can vary a great deal. There are 2 Burger Kings near us. At each we have ordered a hamburger kids meal with fries with instructions that the hamburger can't touch a bun due to a severe food allergy. One has worked out great for us. The other is obviously less careful because my son has gotten very sick after... -
How about some crock-pot soups and other dishes? Just toss it in the morning and it will be ready when you get home and don't feel like cooking. I like mine for soups, stews, pork chops, roasts, etc. A lot of crock-pot recipes are naturally gluten-free and many others can be easily adapted.

ARCHIVED Diagnosis: Celiac
mmcdaniels replied to strawberrygm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would agree that tastes vary a lot for gluten/free products. Most of the ones I've bought, I won't buy again. My son's favorites are Annie's Gluten Free rice pasta and cheddar, Chebe pizza dough, Pamela's pancake mix. We haven't liked any of the Envirokids or Glutino breakfast or snack bars. I have also noticed that some mixes are very easy to prepare... -
ARCHIVED Food Dyes And Fake Sugars
mmcdaniels replied to Lizz7711's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think they bother my son a good deal. We are eliminating all fruit snacks and Froot by the Foot. All are brands that are supposed to be gluten free but I think it's the dyes that cause some odd stools. Marsha -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Gone To Cheeseburger In Paradise In North Myrtle Beach Sc
mmcdaniels replied to suepooh4's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We went to a Cheeseburger in Paradise in Cincinnati last Friday while traveling. It was by far our best gluten-free dining experience. The waitress was knowledgable and sympathetic. The food was quite good. My son is the only Celiac in the family. He had bunless mini-cheeseburger with a generous portion of fries and Heinz ketchup. I enjoyed a great... -
ARCHIVED Restaurants On I-71 Between Louisville, Ky & Mansfield, Oh
mmcdaniels posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We frequently travel on I-71 from Louisville, KY to Mansfield, OH (through Cincinnati and Columbus). This will be our first trip since my son's December dx. I looked and found a Cheeseburger in Paradise in Columbus (Polaris) and Cincinnati. Any other suggestions on places to eat? Thanks. -
ARCHIVED Asberger's And Celiac Disease
mmcdaniels replied to mochalatta's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son is on the more severe end of the autistic spectrum. After 5 years of trying to convince drs. that his digestive system wasn't right, he was finally tested for Celiac. Bingo! He's only been gluten-free for 4 months and his improvements have been huge. He is growing fast in size. His speech is improving daily. Until a few months ago he could only... -
ARCHIVED Virus Or Glutening
mmcdaniels replied to mmcdaniels's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks. Whatever it was, he seems to be doing better now. Once again no dehydration. He's the best drinker I know, he even made it through a very nasty episode with salmonella poisioning without having to get IV fluids. I think the green bms may be associated with dairy for him. I haven't removed it yet. I was wanting to wait until summer when I...
