My 16 year old son has an extremely bloodshot eye. This has been going on for about a month. At first I thought it was pink eye but there are no other symptoms and the doctor has ruled that out. The eye doctor said it is episcleritis. I have been reading up and it is linked to many types of autoimmune disorders. It goes back and forth between eyes. It is very weird - no pain just really red. His sibings and I all have the genes for celiac and various symtoms but all negative blood tests. I have not had this son tested. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

Has anyone used this before? My son's pediatrican is suggesting that we start this because he is soooo constipated. But I went on line and it seems like there is some concerns about whether it really works or not.
Thanks

I have the exact symptoms. I had a blood test through the "gold" standard lab (lots of money later) and it came back showing the genes but negative on tests. My doctor discounted my symptoms and said there was nothing wrong. I went on gluten free diet and felt better pretty quickly. Now I am having problems staying on it but I as soon as I eat gluten my diaherra comes back. So, I am going to redouble my efforts. Good luck

I need some advice because my 13 year old son's pediatrican seems to think that elevated total cholesterol and high phosphorus is ok. So maybe I am missing something so I would appreciate any comments.
His cholesterol test is:
Total cholesterol = 175 (<170)
Triglyceride = 83 (<150)
HDL = 45 (>40)
LD = 106 (<160)
Cholesterol/HDL ratio = 3.9 (<5)
Non HDL Cholesterol/calc = 130 (<160)
Everything seems normal so why is the total cholesterol high???
Also, his phosphorus = 5 and normal is (2.5-4.5)
Does any of this have to do with gluten problems. I had him tested through Entrolab and his values on everything but malabsorption came back high. His pediatrican doesn't believe in the lab.
Thanks for any thoughts.

We are traveling to Europe and was hoping that someone might have some ideas for snacks that we can take along.

My 12 year old son has the following results from Enterolab -
Antigliadin IgA of 128 units (normal is <10
Antitissue Transglutaminase of 70 (normal is <10
Fecal Fat score of <300 (normal is <300)
They recommend that he go on a gluten free diet which I agree. But I am confused. He is very underweight (5%) but it shows no malabsorb issues. Is that conflicting? I would think that he isn't absorbing nutrients if he is under weight and has those high value results. Any thoughts???

My 12 year old son got his test results back as follows:
Antigliadin IGA = 128 - <10 is normal
Antitissue IgA = 70 - <10 is normal
Fecal Fat score = <300 - <300 is normal.
So, they recommended a gluten free diet which I can understand. But what I don't get is why his fecal fat score is normal. He is in the 5% in weight. I would think that he would have some type of malabsorbion problem. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks

I have my 12 year old scheduled for a blood test later today but now I am rethinking it. It is a big deal for him to get blood tests done (autistic) and I am mad about how my own test from Promethus came back. My blood tests came back negative except for genes. I know that it isn't the labs fault but after all of your wonderful advice I went gluten-free and feel much better. So, I am concerned because it is soo expensive and he doesn't like it. And I am afraid it might not show anything anyway. The one reason I would get the blood test is that none of my doctors believe the Entrolab results. Any thoughts on this?? Thanks

I am interested in your child that is Aspbergers (sp?). I also have a son that has been dx with high functioning autism. He is a twin and both of them have had blood tests. All negative but positive genes and lot of symptoms. Can you tell me about your child?

Sorry about that last post. New to posting. I am not on a gluten-free diet because the doctors keep telling me that it isn't related and that just because I have the gene doesn't mean I have it. Especially since my blood test came back negative. Although, I still have all sorts of symptoms.
Soo frustrating.

I used to get severe migraines, but thankfully no more. Have you been on a 100% gluten-free diet? If so, for how long?
Another thing which causes migraines for many people besides gluten is MSG. Look Open Original Shared Link for lots of good info.
I'd also point out that the 'S' in IBS means Syndrome, because the actual cause is unknown. So when your doctor says it's IBS, he's really saying he doesn't know the cause.

I have recently had a blood test done and it came back with one of the main celiac genes but everything else was negative. I have always had severe intestinal problems which all the doctors tell me are IBS. I have been living with this since I was 12. But what is more of a problem is that I have severe migraines a lot. (6 times or so a month). No medicine seems to work. I still have a nagging feeling that it is all related even though the doctors tell me no way.
Any thoughts. Anyone else have severe migraines?

I need a reality check from all of you. I have been going round and round with this issue for years. Here is the bottom line:
Three children and husband - one child is short for age but no digestive issues. Nothing with husband either.
Other 2 children (twins) test results:
BOth have DQ2 (one has an additional HLA-DQB1 *0201, 0602)
One tested through Promethius Lab - all negative blood work
One tested through Enterolab - positive on Gluten sensitivity Stool test (13 units)
One is labeled as Autistic, mood disorder, learning disability, severely constipated, underweight and skin ecemia (sp)
The other is dsylexic and has always had digestive issues (gas).
When they were little both had big tummies and very brightly colored poop
My tests (Promethius Labs)
- Positive for DQ2 but negative for all other blood work
- Been dx with IBS since I was 12 and for the last month and 1/2 - severe morning diaherra
I have my doctor's appt tomorrow and I have this feeling he is going to say the same thing every other doctor has said - no problem.
Do you think that I should just ignore them all and go on a gluten free diet or are they right? It will be extremely difficult with my autistic child to go on diet - all he eats is pasta and bread. Maybe I am just looking for something to correct problems that aren't related. HELP
I forgot to add that I have multiple white matter brain lesions that no one can explain. I have been reading that may also be correlated with celiac.

Hi everyone,
My twins got their lab results back today and here is what it is. If anyone can tell me if they should be on gluten and milk free diet or any other thoughts - enyzmes?? Thanks,
They both have celiac genes and my son was tested gluten sensitive.
#1 - Casomorphin - Peptides - 101, Creastinine- 73 Ratio 1.38 H
Gliahorphin - Peptides - 105, Creatinine - 73 Ratio - 1.44 H
#2 -Casomorphin - Peptides - 145, Creastinine - 102, Ratio - 1.42 H
Gliahorphin - Peptides - 175, Creastinine - 102, Ratio 1.72 H
Thanks for the help

They just said that the HLA - DQ2 is the main gene that predisposes to gluten sensitivity and celiac. Can also prodisse to microscopic colitis and other autoimmune syndromes. Nothing about DQ1. But Dr. Fine did return an email to me that just said the above and that DQ1 usually doesn't lead to celiac but to sensitivity only.
I just wanted to understand more. I know that there is high % of people that are celiac that have the DQ2 gene but I really need to find the statistic that show what % of people that have the gene actually become celiac. Need more "proof" for my husband.

Thank you , thank you, thank you. I thought no one was ever going to reply!! That was very helpful. and actually cleared up somethings. It was very interesting that you said that that the DQ1 (I think) was tied to nuerological problems because he has many of these that we haven't been able to figure out why. Thank you so much!

I finally got our son's stool and gene test back from Enterolab. Here are the results. I have a question about the gene results - Does this mean he has multiply genes or just subtypes . It is very confusing.
Gluten sensitivity stool test - 13 units (shows sensitivity)
All other tests for normal
Gene test:
Molecular analysis - HLA-DQB1 *0201, 0602
Serologic analysuis: HLA-DQ 2, 1 (subtype 2,6)
It looks like he needs to be on the diet. Any comments? Thanks

Please don't take this badly but has anyone had a negative result with a test from Enterolab? It seems that all the posting always come back positive in someway but they were negative through other doctors. I just want to be careful - I have sent in my son's complete stool and gene test to Enterolab and just wanted to make sure that I was dealing with a good lab. My son doctor had recommended someone else and I went against her recommendation.

Hi everyone,
Here is my situation. I have twin 10 year olds. Daughter has one of the celiac genes and has a really big problem with constipation. I took her to a major hospital where they did all the blood tests and they all came back negative except for the gene. The hospital said that we didn't need to do the diet just becasue she had the gene. They thought the constipation was from her just not taking the time to go to the bathroom. She also has serve dyxlesia and a very negative attidute about life. Now, her twin has major emotional problems - depression/bad temper tantums that go on for hours. It is now better managed under Lithium - these blow ups are always at home never at school. He does have occassional stomache that make him come hom from school. He also has occasional diaherra. He is spacey and has problems focusing. The school wants us to put him in a special day class becasue he has a terrible short term memory problemand is having a difficult time keeping up in class. I had him tested for TTS, IGA, IGg, heavy metals..but not the gene (different doctor - ordered differnt tests). Anway, all came back perfectly normal. The doctor wants us to get a stool test and a very sensitive food allergy test done. She also wants us to go gluten free and diary free. This would be a hugh deal for my son as this is all he wants. I am not looking forward to the temper tantums. It would be bad for a while. But we have tried everything else. I am worried for my child and really do want to do everything for him but the tests are expressive and I don't know if putting him on a gluten free diet is the right thing to do if all the tests are negative. Especially both of them (twins) are negative except for gene. I really am at the end of my rope. Any opinions are appreciated.

My 10 year old son's tests all came back negative (IgG, IgA, Autoantibodies, Endomysial and the Tissue Transg). But I though his TT result seemed weird. It was 0.1. In the description they say negative is less than 7.0. So, that says to me that he is really negative. Any comments?

He is a new 10 year old but fairly immature and has a lot of mood issues that interfer with him being able to calmly adjust to new things. Thanks for the advice.

Hi,
Need help. I have twins that look like they may be celiac if nothing else gulten sensitive. The doctor wants us to try the diet but my one is losing it over it. He loves pasta, breads..... and he is literally throwing rages over it. I know that there is pasta... out there but he can tell the difference. Do you just throw everything out and tell him that is the way it is and hope he eventually stops destrorying the house. It is hard because to him he doesn't have any symptoms. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the additional replies. The doctors at Stanford do not want to do a bioposy (sp). So, I guess I will see what the lactose test shows on Monday and then make a plan. Probably will go on diet and get other family members tested.

All the recipes for bread that I can find and the ones on the side of the packages all indicate that they are to be made with a bread maker. I don't have one nor do I have a big standard mixer. I have my hands and a regular old hand mixer. Can I still make bread?
