ARCHIVED Delicate Subject - Anyone Else?
Rebecca's mom replied to Rebecca's mom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I just didn't know if anyone else had experienced this or not - I know we're not imagining things, and the ONLY change that DH has made is to eliminate gluten. I don't think it is a coincidence that we both see a difference (no pun intended....) when he does ingest gluten. Oh, well, I've put the subject out there, so we'll see what folks have to say! -

Hi all, My DH has been gluten-free for a couple of months now (gluten sensitive, not celiac disease), and I am wondering if we are the only people who have made this serendipitous discovery. I'm not sure how to put this, but he's - um - "bigger and better" (lots!) when he's gluten-free. Believe me, I'm not complaining; it's REALLY great - it's like...

ARCHIVED Help Me!`
Rebecca's mom replied to runnerkat's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sometimes there can be "sludge" in a person's gallbladder; that wouldn't show up on a blood test, and sometimes it won't show up on an ultrasound, either. I remember when my gallbladder was acting up, I was in severe pain. You may want to have your doctor check this again - unfortunately if if IS your GB, it will need to come out. The good news is that... -
ARCHIVED Unusual Question
Rebecca's mom posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi all, I am not sure if this is due to celiac disease or something else. I have NEVER been lactose intolerant. I have DH, but my bloodwork came back negative for celiac disease - since the 2 are associated with each other, I have been on a GFD for the past year. I haven't had any problems with any dairy products until just recently. I am wondering if... -

Hope he doesn't mind starving...... (OK, I'm a bit of a witch!) It will get easier - the first month or so is really challenging, but the longer you do this, the easier it will get. We have been gluten-free for almost a year now, and it is second nature now. You will get there, and we are all here to help you get through the early stages! You're going... -
ARCHIVED Cause For Celebration!
Rebecca's mom replied to Rebecca's mom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks so much! Yes, "Dr. Frank" is a pretty special guy. Thanks to his decision to test his DS patients, not only have we been able to educate a lot of families in our local Down syndrome group, we have been able to "catch" a lot of children who aren't in our doctor's practice who might not have been tested otherwise. We have also had several parents... -
ARCHIVED Cause For Celebration!

Hi all, I don't usually "start" posts, but I just had to share this with people who would understand. Our youngest daughter was diagnosed 1 year ago with Celiac Disease. Her tTG number was >100, as was her anti-gliadin number. She had Borderline Stage IV damage to her intestines. She had NO symptoms - none. The only reason that her celiac disease... -

I tell you what, those 1st couple of months are hard food-wise! I was so afraid that I was going to screw up, that I didn't have much variety. Trust me, as time goes on, you will find more and more things that you can eat! I finally realized that if I used a gluten-free Flour Mix (try Bob's Red Mill All Purpose) in the place of "regular" flour for things... -

I will warn you that Schwarzbein isn't a huge fan of sugar, but she doesn't have a problem with an occasional treat. As I said, I am "conducting a scientific experiment" just to see what happens. I know that if I eliminate gluten AND stop drinking Cokes (the biggest source of sugar in my diet) AND start exercising and end up losing weight, no one will believe... -

Another thing to remember is that you have to eat lots of fat to lose lots of fat! If you don't believe me, there is plenty of scientific research out there which proves that point - and NONE that backs up the current fat/heart disease/cholesterol myths...... Go to www.junkfoodscience.blogspot.com for more information - there is lots of interesting stuff... -

Hmmmm, let's see. My eating plan. Well, here it is: DON'T EAT GLUTEN Seriously, that's it. I haven't counted calories, I haven't done portions, I eat fat ALL day and love it, I haven't deprived myself of eating anything that I want! I have found that since I started gluten-free, I get fuller faster, and my stomach is telling my brain... -
ARCHIVED 2 Weeks Gluten Free And Feeling Great!
Rebecca's mom replied to Pegleg84's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Peggy, One more thing that you may want to keep in mind is that I believe in Canada if someone has a positive medical diagnosis of Celiac Disease, they get some sort of tax break or assistance to "shoulder" the additional cost of a medically necessary diet. Also, if you have a celiac disease diagnosis, you will be able to go to the food services folks at... -

You may want to ask your doctor to run a GENETIC test for Celiac, along with the antibody tests. It should be called something along the lines of "HLA-DQ Test for Celiac Disease". Your genes don't lie...... There are people who don't carry the "standard" genes for celiac disease, yet do very well on a gluten-free diet. It won't hurt to have the tests... -

How "strong" are you? By which I mean when you are up in Toronto, do you think that you will be able to resist the urge to eat gluten if you don't know that you have a positive celiac disease diagnosis? If you are one of those people who has excellent self-control, then you probably can decide if you want to be tested or not. If, like most of us, you may... -
ARCHIVED What Is Wrong With Me?
Rebecca's mom replied to mikehall117's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you don't want to do a gluten challenge, then you may be able to ask your doctor to run a genetic test. I don't know what this test is "called" at other labs, but Quest Diagnostics calls it "HLA Typing for Celiac Disease". Since this tests to see if you carry the GENETIC marker for Celiac Disease, you don't have to have gluten in your system. Given... -

You will feel so much better once you have been on the gluten-free diet! And don't let ANYONE tell you that a gluten-free diet is hard to follow and/or maintain. For those of us who can tell almost immediately when we have been "glutened", I think you will find that we will do ANYTHING to prevent gluten ingestion! Incidentally, the only symptom that I... -
ARCHIVED All Or Nothing? Seriously?
Rebecca's mom replied to Tim86's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is probably TMI for most folks, but my husband noticed an unexpected "bonus" when he went gluten-free. While he couldn't really tell any difference in how he felt until a couple of months later, he noticed an immediate change in his "performance". As far as he is concerned, he has eaten his last piece of wheat toast......(And I'm not complaining, either... -
I, too, had a rash that went away after going gluten-free (youngest daughter had a celiac disease diagnosis, so whole house got converted to gluten-free). It had been bugging me for 3 years, but since it didn't have the classic "itching" component, my derm didn't think that it was DH. She also told me that the test will very often give false negative results...

I'm new to this thread, but I have been gluten-free for almost a year now. I have lost 38 pounds (of 150 needed to lose) while eating high-fat foods and not bothering to count calories or measure portions. I had the great good fortune to run across a couple of books and Internet articles which reinforced the "Atkins" - type results. I think that gluten... -

ARCHIVED Can't Stop Binging On Gluten!
Rebecca's mom replied to Rachel Keating's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Rachel, A lot of your issue could also be that when you were diagnosed you were still a teenager (15 yrs. old?). Now that you are older, and responsible for your own well-being, it appears as if you are starting to take charge of your health. I am confident that you will find, as most of us already have, that eating gluten-free becomes easier and easier... -

Rebecca's mom replied to Tabbiekatz's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If it helps any, the entire time that I have been gluten-free, my weight has also fluctuated. I figure this is due to losing the "water" weight from fat loss, then gaining some weight back when the fat is converted into muscle mass. I have definitely seen a marked difference in my muscle tone, and I haven't exercised one bit! You will probably find, as...
