  1. I'm 17 and started having gluten intolerance symptoms at about nine and my symptoms were very intermittent. Sometimes I would be very ill and then I would be fine. I got sick for three weeks the summer before I was diagnosed, similarly to your son. I stopped eating entirely for a while. But I am doing so much on the gluten free diet and am very sure it...
  2. What is your friend researching exactly and how will our answers help? I was just curious. Anything that gets Celiac explained to more people is great.
  3. Hi, welcome to the forum. I have an older brother who has Celiac and a younger sister who doesn't. You should try looking around and seeing if you can find some yummy snacks for yourself that are gluten free. I know that one of our local health food store carries some cookies called Frookies and some crackers called Nut thins. Both are yummy and help...
  4. 1) I've probably had Celiac for about a year and a half. I was diagnosed nine months ago. 2) barely 17 3) I miss my Papa's apple pie, and Frenchbread pizzia, and strawberry cake. 4) A lot of my food is more expensive than what we would normally buy. A lot less sales on it too. We probably spend around $200 a month to keep my brother and I gluten...
  5. My brother and I both have celiac but he is away at school and I still live at home with my parents and little sister. I don't find it difficult in general to see my family eating things I can't but I'm older so I don't know if that makes a big difference. In general we also have gluten free dinners, sometimes with rolls on the side for everyone else. ...
  6. Tiger's Milk bars are good for protein. I'm not sure about carbs, milk, or acidity though.
  7. Coming soon, sorry guys, couldn't get it to work quite right yet but I'm working on it
  8. I have, it was exciting and disappointing. It was neat to see somebody else who has celiac disease but she was a newbie and kept trying to advise me on food and I was nervous to eat what she suggested.
  9. It is amazing how many people you meet who have celiac. I'm always so pleasantly suprised.
  10. I was diagnosed January of 2004, so moving up on one year for me. I was diagnosed by my mother actually but had the diagnosis confirmed by Dr. Tipton, a pediatric GI. Unfortunately we couldn't really work with us here, he is only in Bakersfield for about a day a month, the rest of the time he works at UCLA. I would enjoy being a part of a celiac support...
  11. HELLO! I live in Bakersfield and I'm a celiac. As far as I know there aren't any support groups here but I know two other celiacs living here. It's wonderful to hear there is somebody else here too. Laura
  12. The only thing I would say to that is to look around and see if you can find a gastrointerologist who will give you a positive diagnosis without making you go on gluten and be biopsied. I found one who will legally state that I am a celiac even without what would be considered "conclusive results." Just an idea. Where have you found a scholarship for celiac...
  13. I find the time differs. I can have reactions as quick as 20 minutes and as long as 6 hours before I get sick.
  14. Don't worry about missing the foods you used to be able to have, we all do. I was the biggest breadaholic. I ate bread with every meal and my favorite snack was a flour tortilla with butter or a bagel. It gets easier after a while to see your old favorite foods being consumed by others and your brain adapts to the idea. When I see a bagel now I don't...
  15. Bakersfield, CA Laura
  16. Hiya and welcome to the site. I'm 17 and I still live with my parents so it makes it easier for me to deal with food. I live in California and do a lot of shopping at Trader Joes and Lassens. I really like the EnviroKidz bars. They are made from rice and are either peanut butter flavored or berry. (They also have chocolate but I didn't like them) They...
  17. My mother has always had to be careful with the amount of sugar in her diet as well. I don't think it is related to Celiac, she doesn't have it, we simply call those times as getting "fuzzy." It is possible we are hypoglycemic, I don't know how that is diagnosed. Our bodies just need to be as balanced as possible.
  18. I don't know if it is related to Celiac or not but I get shaky from time to time too. Normally it is when I haven't eaten in a while or haven't had a lot of sugar. I figure my sugar level in my blood just gets low so I eat some candy or drink some soda and I feel better quickly.
  19. GOOD LUCK! I'll be praying for you.
  20. Hi! I live by LA in a town named Bakersfield. Where do you live?
  21. I don't mind calling it an allergy since it is but I find that seems to make people think it's ok to dismiss it and not be as careful. I would rather they be overly careful than accidentally contaminate my food. I've read other posts about people purposely contaminating food or teasing with crumbs and things and it would make me really nervous. I don't...
  22. We live with ourselves every day, we know when we are sick. Our bodies talk to us when we consume gluten. If the diet makes you feel better I don't understand why it is so important to have a doctor make a diagnosis. So many doctors are unfarmiliar with the disease and won't even consider it. I have been gluten free for 8 months and I am feeling a lot...
  23. Technically she couldn't drink the wine either. Wine isn't normally gluten free is it?
  24. Are you sure that your instant oatmeal and instant grits are gluten free? I know that oats are considered a questionable food for celiacs. Some people can tolerate them and some people can't and they have to be really pure. It's all the processing that makes them dangerous to us, not to mention that oats often are grown near wheat and processed in the same...
  25. Don't worry guys this question was about talking to acquaintances and friends. My family has been pretty good about the whole thing, even though they don't like the idea that their genes are partially responsible. I appreciate everything you have said and I think I will use some of the things you guys suggested to make people not underestimate the severity...
