  1. What is the name of the paper? I'd like to go on their site or contact them directly and see if I can get a copy of the article. I'll also Google it and see if it's available. H.
  2. To Calico Jo, thanks for your detailed account of what you take. Can you tell me the brand name of the vitamins? I realize that each person has their own personal reaction to the supplements they take, but the Centrum Silver I was told to take does not sit well with me. In fact, I discontinued taking them about two weeks after starting. All I take now...
  3. Can I ask what you plan to do with information? I have a lot to offer about myself and family that you might find interesting, but would like to know how it will be used. Apologies if it is outlined in your long post. I don't think it's mentioned, but I might have missed it. H.
  4. I live in the South Bay and I did ask the Whole Foods in Campbell if they had a gluten-free cooking class. The person I asked was very knowledgeable about the disease and I thought he'd immediately say, "yes, we have gluten-free cooking classes!" Alas, he just said that they were looking into it. But, to hear that the San Mateo WF might offer a gluten...
  5. If it helps, I was diagnosed at the ripe old age of 51. Since April, I've had CT scans, colonoscopy, endoscopy and a barium swallow. They didn't find any evidence of any other abnormalities, let alone cancer. And I've had this disease since I was a child. However, I wouldn't take our word for it, I'd recommend you call and talk to your doctor. Everyone...
  6. I agree about "action." I want to manage this disease, and not the other way around. I have gathered as much knowledge as one can in 4 months and it's time to step in to action and have this diet second nature to me. Probably easier said than done and this forum is a great place to ask questions. H.
  7. I know exactly what you mean. My friends and family were very supportive at first, but the eye rolling thing is a good clue that I've about saturated everyone with my knowledge of this disease. And I agree, this forum is an excellent outlet to learn, vent or give advice, about this curious ailment. I now find myself talking to people I don't even know...
  8. I'd be interested in learning what works for others, too. I think my stomach is worse now than before my diagnosis. What about supplements? I haven't heard of glutamine, but have heard of probiotics. Where does one find this stuff? What about gluten free vitamins? Liquid vs. pill. Perhaps the iron I'm taking is part of the problem. But, I need it...
  9. I've used corn starch as a thickener in the past, too, and it worked really well. I've gone back to stir fry, coating the chicken or beef in corn starch. When adding the gluten-free chicken broth and gluten-free soy sauce, it thickens up very well. I think I'll try the potato starch though, I hadn't heard about that before. Good to have options. Frying...
  10. You know, when I was a kid I was always anemic (I guess I know why, now) and my mom force fed me liver, chicken liver, raisins, spinich, and anything else that contained iron. Being from England, it was all fried - except for the spinich, it was just over cooked and slimy. So, you can imagine how I feel about liver However, raisins have resurfaced...
  11. Hmmm. Maybe that explains my upset stomach. I had severe anemia, which is why I was tested for celiac disease, and told to take these Ferro-Sequels and start a gluten-free diet. I have assumed all this time that my sour stomach was due to the diet change and that I was doing something wrong - maybe not eliminating all glutens. I'll take your advice...
  12. Thanks for these suggestions. I'll let you know what I find out. I'm in Northern California, but am willing to fly anywhere in the US to learn how to cook. My goal is to have all my meal planning and cooking second nature to me. I'm getting a little tired of being a slave to my binder Thanks again.
  13. Before being diagnosed with Celiac Disease this past May, I enjoyed the quick take out meals or hot pizza delivered to the house after a long day at work. Unfortunately, Celiac Disease has put a quick stop to that and I now have to prepare fresh meals each day. O.k., I'm sure I can prepare them in advance and freeze them for those nights when I'm too tired...
  14. Does anyone know if the iron supplement, Ferro-Sequels, are gluten free? I called the company and they said it is, but my stomach is always upset. Any other recommendations for getting the iron into me are greatly apprecaited. Thanks in advance.
  15. This is one of those cases where I say, "doh! why didn't I think of that handle?" Great name, for sure. Have you checked www.clanthompson.com? They have compiled an extensive list of foods and identifies them as gluten-free, unknown, or not gluten-free. It costs a little, but you can purchase either hard copy or softcopy (for both PC and PalmPilot)...
  16. So, most of Coldstone's ice creams are gluten free? I've only been there once and had their sweet cream ice cream with bananas. I think it was safe, but not sure. The flu was going around that week and I think I had a touch of it, but I must admit, I haven't been back just in case. Also, which Cheesecake Factory was that? It's good to know that more...
  17. Thanks for your wonderful insight. I recently celebrated my birthday in Truckee, California, at a great restaurant. When making the reservations, I mentioned my celiac disease and asked if they could accommodate my diet. They took the time to read the menu to me, check with the chef, and at the end of the day, I felt comfortable about eating there. ...
  18. It's good to know that I can trust Kraft. I was counseled by the dietician I see not to eat any foods unless the source of the natural and artificial foods are disclosed. Since most of the Kraft packaging I've come across just said natural flavors, I assumed that they may be of a gluten derivative. However, my understanding from recent posts is that...
  19. Clan Thompson (www.clanthompson.com) offers a drug list which lists many prescription and over the counter medications, lotions, and other items you'd find in a pharmacy, as either gluten free or not. And, they also list those products that are unknown either way. This list not only tells you if its gluten free or vegan, but it gives the manufacturer's...
  20. Neutrogena has shampoos, conditioners and soaps that are gluten-free, as does Pantene. Clan Thompson (www.clanthompson.com) offers a database with an abundance of items that are gluten-free, along with those that aren't. Check it out. You can either download it to your PC, PalmPilot (or both), or order them in print form. There is a charge, but it is...
  21. Make up. Wow, another consideration. Believe it or not, the Neutrogena lip sticks and gloss are gluten-free and look pretty good, too. As far as foundation, etc., I haven't made that switch yet. I use Bobby Brown and have tried unsuccessfully to reach them by email. But, I'll keep trying. I agree with all the responses about being better safe than sorry...
  22. I would imagine it depends on your system. How severe are your symptoms, typically? For me, I get stomach cramps for about 3 days. As far as absorption, etc., I'm sure you're not back to square one. Have you checked with your doctor?
  23. Can anyone recommend really good, gluten-free hair products? I've tried nutrogena shampoo and conditioners, with Pantene mousse. Not really good for my hair type. But, my headaches have subsided. Thanks.
  24. Does this list apply to the US products as well? Also, do you know how old this list is? When I contacted Kraft, they were quite uncooperative, telling me to read the label, as all ingredients are listed. However, they never tell you the source of their natural or artificial flavors, so I usually move on down the aisle.
  25. I'll definitely follow up with you. To be frank, the group at Stanford would be more convenient, as Morgan Hill is South of us - and if you know Bay Area traffic, well, 'nuff said. I agree with you that there are more and more celiacs popping up every day. I met one just today when shopping at REI. The clerk was helping me locate an insulated backpack...
