  1. I just bought a Breadman bread machine from Sears and it has a gluten-free setting. Not only that, but it has gluten-free bread recipes inside! The machine was only $99.00, too. Perhaps you can catch a sale. Helen.
  2. I just bought a Breadman Ultimate at Sears for $99.00 and it has a Gluten Free setting. Not only that, but the recipe booklet includes great Gluten-Free recipes, too. I've been quite busy since I bought it, so I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but others who have say the bread it just wonderful. Good luck. Helen.
  3. You mention all the symptoms that I had. And, I was diagnosed with IBS. My recommendation is to demand a blood test for celiac disease AND an endoscopy regardless of the blood results. Since your mom has similar symptoms, have her checked, too. As a child I was anemic, diagnosed with anorexia (even though I just hated to eat food because I felt so awful...
  4. There's a doctor that she frequently has on the show. He's always educating her audience about the human body. Perhaps, when it's my turn to ping Oprah, I could use that tact -- ask her to invite the doctor to address celiac disease and offer experts such as Danna Korn and Shelly Case. We could also suggest that she have a cooking segment with Carol Fenster...
  5. Yes, headaches can be associated with gluten intake. It usually takes me about two weeks or so for "cluster" headaches to subside. If he ate glutens, then it could be associated with Celiac. Helen.
  6. I discovered Amy's Mac and Cheese a few weeks ago and was thrilled. I had about 3 or 4 of them and then the last one gave me bad cramps and diareha (sp). It's the only thing I can think of that I ate gluten free. After that, I decided to stick to what I know. Cooking it for myself in a gluten-free kitchen from gluten-free ingredients. I miss the...
  7. My two favorite books are: Gluten-Free Diet by Shelley Case. It was one of the first books I purchased after being diagnosed in May 2004. It became my absolute favorite and I relied on it heavily. I bought "Gluten-Free 101" by Carol Fenster. I thought I knew it all after being gluten free for 1.5 years, but this book provided a lot of valuable information...
  8. I understand that Viactiv is gluten-free and I ate both the multi vitamins and the calcium religiously. At the same time, I had raging migraines to the tune of everyother day, brain fog, dizziness, and bloating. I decided to stop taking them in case the chocolate was promoting the headaches. Well, in two weeks I've only had two migraines and very little...
  9. Two other books that I live by are: Gluten-Free 101 by Carol Fenster and Gluten-Free Diet by Shelly Case. Both books describe in layman's terms the disease, what to avoid, what to embrace. Both books are very positive, too. And, for the most part, the information seems very accurate. Check 'em out. Helen.
  10. I've had similar pain during intercourse, too, but my doc just figures it's associated with menopause -- early onset due to hysterectomy. Prior to diagnosis, I was told I had adenemyosis a cousin to endo. He's just given me vaginal hormone suppositories I use twice a week. What a hassle! If anyone can give me any info to give to him, let me know. My...
  11. How do you know if they've added undistilled grains after the distillation process? Do you list it on the bottle? H.
  12. If the product truly is gluten free, that's great, but can we rely on it not being processed or produced on the same belt or facility as gluten-containing products? I worry about cross contamination. Helen.
  13. Yes, Viactiv is gluten free. I've been taking one 500 mg with lunch and again with dinner since being diagnosed. It's the only brand that doesn't upset my stomach. I tried the Viactiv vitamin chews, and while they don't upset my stomach, they have a terrible after taste. On the calcium note, when I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I was also diagnosed...
  14. Why would you need a medical alert bracelet for Celiac Disease? If you're unconscious and can't respond, I guarantee you that no medical professional will try and force feed you anything, gluten free or not. If anything, they would hook you up to an IV for fluids and when you come to, you can tell them yourself your food restrictions. Again, they...
  15. Does Bare Escentuals offer makeup remover, moisturizer and eye makeup remover? What about their mascara and eye liner? Helen.
  16. If this happens when you eat with your boss and your boss's boss, I'd tell them something they can relate to -- the bottom line. If you eat glutens it may not affect you immediately, but it will make you ill for about 1 week or so and that you'll have to call in sick while recovering. When they realize that they influenced your decision to eat glutens,...
  17. Yes, I asked for a gluten-free menu and the waiter seemed to understand my needs. I went over it with him again when I ordered my food. Did you know that the butter that is melted on the fresh vegetables has seasoning in it? So, when ordering Outback's steamed veggies, you need to tell them no seasoning and no melted butter. We just have to continue...
  18. Sue, thanks for the URL. Can you recommend one of these shampoos that leaves your hair shiney? My hair is a little dry, but can get oily by the end of the day. Thanks, Helen.
  19. What can you eat at McDonalds besides french fries, a side salad and chocolate sundae? I've eaten at Outback, but have gotten sick a couple of times. Probably cross contamination. Even though corporate has worked with the gluten intolerant group doesn't mean that all franchises follow the rules. That being said, I totally agree with going out to...
  20. Thanks for the info. What's a Sholland List? Helen.
  21. Ice cream is great, but I'm having lactose issues right now so I've switched to popsicles. But, Edy's/Breyers fruit bars are getting old. The Good Humor popsicles list natural and artificial flavors in their ingredient list, but won't disclose the source. Does anyone know if the Popsicle brand (by Good Humor) are o.k.? What about brands?
  22. Yes, my hair is falling out, too. I complained to my doctor, who immediately tested my thyroid and my hormone levels (I'm at that age). All were normal, so I'm thinking my shampoo my be the culprit. A gluten free shampoo was mentioned. Can you post the name of this shampoo and how to get it? Conditioner, too. I use Neutrogena, and as I found out...
  23. What's Aspergillis (s) and where is it used, food or drugs or both? Another ingredient to look out for? H.
  24. I was diagnosed with celiac disease by positive blood test and biopsy, which I understand to be the most reliable diagnostic tools available to date. There is also a gene blood test which is reliable, but most insurance companies will not cover it. I'm not sure about the stool test to diagnose celiac disease, but learned at a Celiac conference last year...
  25. What kind of blood test did you have that provided these results? When I was first diagnosed, they did some extra CT scans to confirm that I didn't have cancer (I was 51 when diagnosed and pretty sick) and discovered that my pancreas was enlarged. When they did a repeat scan to take a better look, all was normal. There was about 3 or 4 weeks between tests...
