  1. ugh....he's continuing to lose ground with this syndrome. today he lost swallowing, blinking, and speaking. he's on oxygen but not yet a vent. pneumonia has set in. hope this plateus soon...my heart is bursting.
  2. You guys are the greatest! HUGS
  3. awww....sorry for your loss!
  4. Nowadays for comfort I eat a baked potato with butter and garlic salt. my comfort foods previous to gluten-free were pastries...donuts and especially cinnamon rolls
  5. aww drat!
  6. What is interesting to me about this experience with my friend (and another friend who lost his battle with Pancreatic cancer a couple years back) is how it resonates with past events and feelings I have had. My husband is a longtime sufferer of Crohn's disease. Over the years we have had years of extreme pain and disability, emergency surgeries, long recoveries...
  7. Thanks and you are right! Even in this case it could be worse - a full recovery is 70% likely, and an almost-full recovery is more like 90 - 95% likely. Pretty great odds compared to many things. It's going to be an endurance event, but it can have profound and beautiful scenery along the way. Thanks for the hugs...I'll be sure to pass it on!
  8. I have had a few drama-queen moments of self-pity over the past few months with my illness and then adjusting to the gluten-free lifestyle. Today I sit before you, ashamed and devastated. One of my best friends came down with Guillain-Barre Syndrome last week. A week later and he is completely paralyzed and cannot feel anything except pins and needles...
  9. I was like you....used to be really althletic, then as GI symptoms appeared I had steady weight gain, constant hunger, slow metabolism, bloating I exercised regularly but it was a struggle due to low energy and stomach pain went gluten free 2 months ago and everything corrected itself, including my weight. I'm now 8 lbs from my 'goal weight' without...
  10. I know how you feel! I don't have any advice, other than be good to yourself. I'm still figuring out all this stuff myself and being shy does not help at all. I love your username. Spreken sie Deutsch?
  11. I hear ya! It sounds like your experience is a lot like mine, in which case you should see the pounds melt away as you feel better and better! so glad you are healing!
  12. I forgot to mention that in my experience, my hunger is totally different now that I am gluten-free. I used to have a gnawing hunger and carb cravings all the time before, even though I would get sick every time I ate I still wanted to eat! Now I really have no strong hunger, and definitely no inappropriate hunger. Cravings are almost nonexistent. It...
  13. I too suffered unexplained weight gain in the years prior to going gluten-free when I was suffering symptoms. The last 2 months before going gluten-free I was so sick every day that I lost about 25lbs. When I went gluten-free my symptoms went away and I expected to gain the weight back..... But I didn't. In fact, I've continued to lose weight very slowly...
  14. This forum is so wonderful. You are all so helpful - it has made my transition and healing go so smoothly. I can't imagine going through this without resources like this forum. A million hugs to you all! An update on my journey: I went Gluten Free just about 2 months ago. Made a few mistakes along the way but for the most part the changes...
  15. I made a road trip to Concord NH and had the Gluten Free Pepperoni pizza on Saturday I couldn't stop grinning the whole time....I was at a pizza place - eating a not-salad! I thought it was pretty good, though they could have put more sauce on it (I am a sauce fiend) It was so nice to be able to sit and watch (and smell) my spouse eating a deep dish...
  16. several of my relatives (mother, uncles) have celiac, bipolar, and overweight issues. my mom is type 2 diabetic now as well, but she says it's a result of the bipolar meds. I don't have bipolar, but I know for sure when I went gluten-free my general anxiety levels dropped tremendously, so I could see how untreated celiac could easily aggravate existing...
  17. I keep having nightmares where I accidentally ate something really gluteny. One time it was a donut, and when it was half gone I was like "OMG! WHAT on earth was I thinking?" And then I wake up in a panic. Another time it was someone at a party who shoved something in my face and said 'Try THIS' so I took a bite. Then I realized I didn't know what...
  18. oh dear, that's too bad. I do expect it will come and go with me, but I finally have enough of my health back that it is beaten back for the first time. hopefully you'll get some relief when you least expect it
  19. about 6 weeks gluten free now I'm so amazed at the changes that have happened and keep happening! I've had pretty significant psoriasis that covers the right side of my scalp and right ear for years and years without any remission. no treatment ever did much for me. Within a couple weeks of going gluten-free the itching really eased up, and if it...
  20. YES! yes yes yes! That sounds exactly what I have been experiencing. 3 times in 5 weeks this has happened. sorry to hear you're having it also
  21. Indeed! This is quite a roller coaster ride! Luckily for me there have been far more ups than downs, but the downs are quite spectacular!
  22. I'm 5 weeks gluten free with no formal diagnosis other than my entire family having celiac including my mom. I had an almost immediate reaction to the diet - no more headaches, vastly improved GI and mental clarity. I have had two 'attacks' in the 5 weeks gluten free where my GI pain, gas, D, nausea, etc. all came back suddenly for a day or so. I...

    ARCHIVED So I Did It...

I'm a recovered anorexic. In hindsight I wonder how much gluten intolerance played into the disorder. I felt better if I didn't eat....so I might have been managing my symptoms (mainly anxiety but some physical also) the only way I knew how at the time, which was starvation.

    ARCHIVED So I Did It...

sorry to hear you're feeling the effects. I am finding I have a delayed reaction to glutening also. Look on the bright side - if you do get accidentally glutened in the future you have time to get home before your guts explode and/or your brain melts.

    ARCHIVED So I Did It...

I totally understand why you did it. Some days all I want to do is stuff myself with pastries! I've been gluten free almost a month now, and earlier this week I decided to test myself. I ate a cracker. One saltine. The world did not end, and that night and the next day I thought...'huh...maybe I CAN eat donuts again!' Then on the third day (yesterday...
