ARCHIVED Grrr...wegmans Hunt Valley Maryland
HopeMum replied to HopeMum's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I realize my husband bears some responsibility but it wasn't just a shelf in the store. It was a rack in the bakery/prepared section that had a large 'handpainted' sign stating GLUTEN FREE BAKED GOODS and underneath a bunch of cookies etc in plastic clam shell type boxes. It was purposely displayed as Gluten Free because that is what Wegmans thought they... -
ARCHIVED Grrr...wegmans Hunt Valley Maryland
HopeMum posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love Wegmans, I do all of my shopping there but I am still hopping mad... I was working at Wegmans last Saturday (giving flu shots for the Health Department) and I saw a huge sign in the prepared foods dept "GLUTEN FREE BAKED GOODS." on top of a rack of about 6 shelves of cookies, cakes, brownies etc. My husband brought our 3 year old celiac daughter... -
I have a 3 year old celiac, a picky 6 year old and I'm a wannabe vegetarian. My husband likes ground beef type meals (tacos, chili etc) so I used to use Boca crumbles. When my daughter was diagnosed 2 years ago I switched to real ground beef for us and gluten free kid meals, pasta, fruit etc but I'm finding that I can't bring myself to eat beef..yuk. My...

Any input appreciated.... My daughter is almost 3, was diagnosed with Celiac disease just over a year ago. My pregnancy with her was awful, I was sick, exhausted, depressed and hated the entire 9 months. I also have a 5 year old and that pregnancy was totally fine. Anyway, I have just been diagnosed with Lyme disease, had tons of symptoms, was hospitalized...

ARCHIVED Dq2 Positive, Now What?
HopeMum posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My 2.5 year old daughter has celiac disease diagnosed last May by biopsy etc. Me and DH were tested at the time for antibodies and both negative. His father died in March from rectal cancer, made me think that DH should get genetic test. He's positive for DQ2. He does get diarrhea occasionally and has had rectal fissures etc, we've been gluten light just... -
ARCHIVED <2yo Son Scheduled For Biopsy, Questions
HopeMum replied to jdoylemd's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, My dd also sees Dr Safta at UMAB. She had her biopsy there last May (was 20 months) and everyone was great. I did not see her start the anesthesia but was there for her to wake up. Be prepared, I was expecting her to be curled up asleep but she was flat out and it scared me. She was absolutely fine and of course doesn't remember a thing. She also was... -
I'm conflicted about a lot of information re contamination. I've read the posts below re making kitchen gluten free, throwing out colanders, wooden spoons etc. I didn't do any of this, just put through dishwasher and keep separate toaster and cutting board. Here's why I'm confused, I'd like to someday eat in a restaurant again but I'm supposed to tell them...

ARCHIVED What Would You Do If It Was Your Child?
HopeMum replied to Nicholasmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was convinced to do the biopsy for several reasons. First, a gluten challenge later in life would take much longer to show damage because she already had the damage and was not healed yet. Then, I realized it would be 'easy' to switch to gluten free now but five years down the line, would we be tempted to 'cheat' with a little birthday cake? Also, my... -

ARCHIVED What Would You Do If It Was Your Child?
HopeMum replied to Nicholasmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When my daughter had a positive blood test I started gluten free immediately. Then was persuaded to do the biopsy so about a week later she went 'gluten light.' I was told by the nurse for Alessio Fasano at the Center for Celiac research at University of Maryland that just a handful of Goldfish crackers per day would be enough. It was, her biopsy was positive... -
ARCHIVED Weezing And Nasty Cough
HopeMum replied to JULIA-BOSTON's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The symptoms sound just like my daughter's. Also from October to April, there has been an improvement this year but I think just because she is older (couple of ER visits last winter before celiac diagnosis). Another reason I doubt the asthma diagnosis is because the nebulizer helps a little but not as much as it should, she coughs before, during and after... -
ARCHIVED Weezing And Nasty Cough
HopeMum replied to JULIA-BOSTON's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, My daughter was diagnosed a year ago at 18mos. She gets what the pediatrician calls 'reactive airways' when she gets the slightest runny nose. She wheezes and gets awful sounding cough which we treat with asthma meds but it also clears up very quickly (making me think it is not viral or bacterial). The reason I'm responding is that she had it this... -
ARCHIVED Toddler Snacks?
HopeMum replied to odcdinah's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have a 2.5 year old celiac and a 4.5 year non celiac who are both big snackers. I agree that the specialist gluten-free stuff is so expensive and often horrible. We do a lot of the above mentioned, esp cheese sticks, cubes etc and I know baking is tough with kids but I have an awesome quick, cheap recipe.... 1 Cup Peanut Butter 1 Cup sugar 1 Egg 1 tsp... -
ARCHIVED How To Test For Gluten Sensitivity..
HopeMum posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As pinned already, my DH tested neg for celiac, is there testing available for gluten sensitivity? Can an allergist help? Any appreciated Claire -
ARCHIVED Dh Gluten Insensitivity?
HopeMum posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have a 2.5 year old girl who was diagnosed (blood, biopsy, diet works) almost a year ago. My DH and I were tested (blood) at the time and both negative, didn't proceed any further with that. At the time I was convinced that of the two of us, he would have Celiac. He has a long history of weird GI symptoms, literally can have diarrhea minutes after eating... -
ARCHIVED Your Favorite Gluten Free Discovery
HopeMum posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I discovered yesterday that Post's Cocoa Pebbles are gluten free!! I never expected to be so happy to see my daughter eat 'junk' cereal but she was so happy that it was 'normal' food and had Fred Flintstone on the box. What is your favorite? -
ARCHIVED Test Negative, Diet Results Positive, What To Do?
HopeMum replied to abbysmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Also, it may be worth mentioning that a gluten free diet can be more healthy!! It's not like you're choosing a poor diet for your baby, what doc wouldn't agree with that? Claire -
ARCHIVED Daycare And Gluten
HopeMum replied to caek-is-a-lie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter was diagnosed at 18 months. She was in and in-home daycare until last Sept and then a 'nursery school' with kids aged 2-5. It is hard and she has been glutened twice (neither her fault!!) I tried to educate them but basically decided that she eats NOTHING that is not provided by me. She takes a lunch box every day and extra snacks and a plastic... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
HopeMum replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For LittleguywCD... I can understand the fear about getting a biopsy. I had my daughter biopsied at 18 months. I had initially decided against it because she had been gluten-free with great results for about 10 days. What changed my mind was the need to know PLUS the fact that she was not healed yet so even with the improvment in symptoms the biopsy was... -
ARCHIVED Panera For My 2 Year Old
HopeMum posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 2 year old was diagnosed in May. I'm very wary of eating out with her but have done some research and want to try. Anyway, went to Panera Bread today with a print out of 'safe' menu items, got flustered when ordering and ended up with the Fuji Chicken Salad for me and her to share. The 'chef' got kind of mad with my husband when he insisted she change... -
ARCHIVED Made In A Facility With Wheat? And Kisses
HopeMum posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have asked our dietician about products made in a plant that processes wheat on food labelling. She stated this was voluntary and meaningless and if wheat/gluten containing products were not included in the ingredient list it could be considered safe. I still don't feel able to give these products to my child, she's only 2 and so not able to describe how... -
ARCHIVED New Here Too - Need Help
HopeMum replied to Tim V's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm new here too but also feel like I'm reading my own daughter's story. We are about 6 months ahead of you Tim. My daughter was diagnosed in May and also sees Dr Fasano (we live in Parkton MD) All the advice received so far was great. I just wanted to add something that helps me through the ups and downs of the diet. I have a non celiac 4 year old daughter...
