  1. please try gluten free. who cares what the test says??? if he responds to a gluten free diet, you have your answer. my son also tested negative (at about 9 months old) but when we took him off gluten at age 4, he changed into a new happy guy in THREE DAYS. he started to sleep all night. he started to be sweet all day every day. his tummy went flat. please...
  2. me, too!!! i was diagnosed in March AND my father in law has it. so seeing some possible symptoms in my 4 year old was enough for me to try gluten free for him. We didn't even have him tested, just took him off gluten. he finally sleeps all night (i wish he slept past 6am, though!) and he is pleasant nearly all day every day. and the tummy is gone! hooray...
  3. well just kidding. because i was glutened at some point over the weekend. it isn't nearly as bad today as it was last week when i was up for 2 hours in the middle of the night and had the pain you described. but i am definitely not right. i realized earlier i had the brain fog! i HATE the brain fog! (as well as other issues- the "bubble" in my throat...
  4. Of course, eating out is always a risk. If not from ingredients, then from cross contamination. So far, I have done just find in restaurants by explaining to the server that s/he needs to consult the chef before serving my meal (folks have been SO kind and helpful with only one exception) and by asking line workers to switch gloves, etc before making my...
  5. i would just go gluten free and see if you feel better. who cares what your doctor says if YOU KNOW that you feel better without it? you can always go gluten free and then later challenge yourself by eating gluten to see if you react adversely. personally, i don't want to challenge myself because it is VERY clear to me that gluten hurts me. i think most folks...
  6. can you see an allergist to have a panel done to see what appears? would paperwork from a doctor assist them in understanding your illness? i am sorry you going through this. my family is very supportive- my husband and young children AND my parents, sister, brother, etc. with whom i spend vacation and special events. i am the mom in my house, but it is...
  7. i am like you. i do bloat, but it is hard to tell if i am just full or actually puffed up sometimes. i was diagnosed after vomiting for two weeks. (the GI said i was on the edge for so long, i just finally "fell off.") he couldn't even tell me if i had true celiac or gluten intolerance. with an intolerance, i wouldn't panic about CC. but since i don't know...
  8. yuck, what idiots... i, too, vomit with gluten exposure. but rather than go into throwing up... when people ask me about celiac, i tend to go with the overall disease and most serious consequences. my most common questions are: how did you get it all of a sudden/how did you know after so long (i am almost 34)? celiac can be triggered by stress...
  9. this is how i felt before i was diagnosed. i always thought it was sugar or carb overload, but it all makes sense now. pancakes, bagels and cake used to nearly send me into a como. but gluten free ones don't! (ps don't eat pizza, silly!! make gluten free pizza!)
  10. your child is gluten intolerant, celiac or not. my blood work was negative. my biopsy was positive. and i stopped throwing up IMMEDIATELY upon going gluten free. my 4 year old tested negative as in infant. however, 3 days after going gluten free he started sleeping all night for the first time in his LIFE and has become the sweetest, most pleasant child...
  11. that is what it is supposed to be like. you just didn't know because your body was never able to "do it right" before going gluten free!
  12. we took my younger son off gluten after i was diagnosed. within 3 days, he slept all night, didn't have any more nightmares, woke up happy and remained incredible pleasant ALL day. he is no longer irritable or defiant. it hasn't been long, but i am dying to see if he gains height, as he is MUCH shorter than his brother was at the same age (but still 50th...
  13. it was easier for me if i took one gulp and then gulped some water to rinse it down. hang in there. i had to skip the last serving because i was gagging so hard it was all i could do to not throw it up! but the good news is that the potty part isn't painful. just time consuming!! ha!
  14. I encourage you to reframe your thinking. Instead of "my wife won't let me eat gluten foods" think "my wife CANNOT eat gluten foods, but i can still have whatever i want when i go out." Instead of " my wife is denying me my favorite foods" try "my wife had to give up ALL of her favorite gluten foods, but i can still have them if i learn to keep a clean...
  15. I am so sorry about your diagnosis. Peace to you.
  16. i hadn't thought about it since going gluten free, but i bet it is because i don't have trouble breathing anymore! so yes, i do know what you are talking about. it happened to me a lot when driving. i felt like i could not sit up straight enough to get air. i got anxious about my clothes being too tight or my posture because i couldn't seem to fix it. disappeared...
  17. i was thinking i'd put my toaster rack in the dishwasher just in case for the same reason. my husband has only 3 gluten items in the house- whole wheat bread, kashi cereal and multigrain crackers. i get nervous whenever i put a gluten-free english muffin in for me or a gluten-free waffle for my son (who was not dx as celiac, but seems to sleep better and...
  18. Thyroid over and over... they finally started treating me as a subclinical hypothyroid patient (which was great, because it did help.) my GP told me over and over again that i was depressed. in spite of the fact that i was 1)not sad and 2)had a Psych. who said i was NOT and felt certain i had a medical problem causing the fatigue. (clearly, i have a new...
  19. from what i have read here and from my limited experience (been gluten-free since March 13) it was the wooden spoon because it is porous and can have gluten IN the spoon. and yes, drinking from someone's glass with gluten residue could cause the problem. my only cross contamination experience so far has been using a pizza stone to make gluten free pizza...
  20. please try yoga. it would help not only with increasing your strength in a gentle way (my gym has a class called gentle yoga!) but it can also help with the mind/body connection.
  21. talk to your doc about subclinical hypothyroid. it took me THREE doctors to learn about it. i started thyroid treatment in aug (wasn't diagnosed with celiac until march) after nearly 4 years of the same symptoms as yours and "normal" thyroid levels. i felt a WONDERFUL change with the thyroid meds! no, my symptoms didn't disappear because i had celiac and...
  22. my blood test was negative. and then i started throwing up. i had an endoscopy to look for signs of reflux or an ulcer. the GI did a biopsy "while he was there." and i had double the # of lymphocytes "required" to be above normal. just do the diet. my son (as i just said in a different thread) does not have a diagnosis, we just took him gluten free. and...
  23. my son doesn't even have a diagnosis. he had a negative blood test as an infant, after 2 straight months of D. he hasn't slept all night more than a few times since he was BORN. he is very gassy. he complains of tummy aches. he is much shorter than his brother, (but not short-50th %ile.) he is VERY irritable and stubborn. when i was diagnosed, we just...
  24. I would love to find a way to end the fatigue!! I was diagnosed in mid March, so I have only been gluten free since March 13. Not only am I totally fatigued from Celiac and hypothyroidism and from being sick with upper respiratory garbage 2 weeks out of every 4... I have a 4 year old who wakes me up every single night and then between 5 and 6am. I have...
  25. I was diagnosed in mid March after a few weeks of vomiting and a biopsy that revealed excessive lymphocytes. In the first week I went gluten free, I was exposed twice and threw up twice. I may have thrown up maybe once since then when I ate something questionable (gluten free, but in shared facility). I *think* I am truly gluten free because I no longer...
