  1. Thanks for the helpful response. Here's one other factoid: Prometheus says my daughter is DQ2 homozygous, and Labcorp says my wife has a DQ2....so apparently Prometheus is consistent in saying I have a DQ2. Does that consistency mean I shoudl believe them over Labcorp? Prometheus was a saliva sample and Labcorp a blood sample....what does that mean for...
  2. Earlier this year I took the Enterolab test, and they said my DNA is HLA-DQ 2,2 (Subtype 2,2). Also "although you do not possess the main HLA-DQB1 genes predisposing to celiac sprue...you have two copies of a gene that predisposes to gluten sensitivity:... HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 1 0202 HLA-DQB1 Molecular analysis, Allele 2 0202 Wanting to...
  3. Because no one knows what the final bill will be, no one really knows what the impact will be. I speculate that doctors will face increased administrative headaches, increased liability premiums, and lower paychecks. Consequently we will have fewer doctors. The impact will be greatest on the gatekeeper GPs, who will have greater patient loads in addition...
  4. I'm in the same boat -- gluten-free for 7 months, frequent travel. Here's what I tried the last two weeks. I called hotels and spoke the chef before making reservations. I stayed at a hotel that seemed comfortable and knowledgable with gluten free. I also looked for restaraunt recommendations from local GIGs. Unfortunately, on this last trip there was no...
  5. While visiting in New York I went to dinner at an East Side restaurant that happened to be a part of a large, well known national chain. I ordered a steak off of the gluten free menu and was surprised when it was delivered with au jus. I've never been served the au jus with a gluten free meal in any of the chains other restaurants. Thinking asking was...
  6. I have two copies of the 0202 gene also, one on each allelle. One from my father, and one from my mother.
  7. Funny that you should mention RLS-like symptoms. I developed those symptoms several months before I was diagnosed. They went away after I went on the gluten-free diet, and now only return for only a couple nights shortly after I've been glutened. It's good to hear about the part that low iron plays. I'll have to check that out. Thanks!
  8. I've been gluten-free for almost two months now. The first few weeks I was ravenous, but then the hunger went away. Also, I eat much less now. I figure that I ate much more beforehand simply to compensate for not getting the nutrition I should from the food I was eating. Now that some healing has taken place, I do get better nutrition from less food,...
  9. A good study on the celiac's tolerance for gluten is at www.celiac.org/downloads/research/ catassi%20study%20on%20gluten%20tolerance.pdf My interpretation: Although the study results say that ingestion should be less than 50 mg/d, the study also notes a wide variance in the tolerable amount per celiac subject. It also says "Because of the limited number...
  10. Thanks for the advice. With each glutening ramping up in intensity I think I have to try something. Today someone mentioned that I should visit a doctor that specializes in functional medicine. Vitamin B12 sound like good idea. I'll try it and see if it works. Ditto for tea. MySuicidalTurtle, before going gluten-free I self-medicated the groggy...
  11. I got glutened for the third time either Saturday or Sunday. It gets worse each time. The first time was slow onset groggyness, sleepyness, some GI symptoms, and it only lasted four hours. The last time was twenty minutes from alert and energetic to so sleepy I literally could not stay awake, groggyness, pain, jumpy legs, anxiety, and other stuff, all...
  12. I've also heard that blood tests have a high false negative rate. Their value seems to be a low false positive rate. Both myself and a family member had inconclusive blood test results, and we both got diagnosis of Celiac; the family member by the traditional method -- biopsy -- and myself by the Enterolabs test (including genetic test), family history...
  13. I did the Enterolab test a few months ago. It's not difficult at all to do. From what I recall, they send you all you need. The stool sample collector is a plastic bowl that fits over the toilet bowl. After collecting the sample, you put a provided cap on the plastic bowl, freeze it, put it in a provided biohazard bag, put the bag in a provided shipping...
  14. While out of town on business today, I thought I'd eat lunch at a chain restaurant that has a good chain reputation (on this board and others) for gluten-free food. Their web site has a gluten-free menu, and celiacs from my home town recommend the home-town restaurant without reservation. With that being said, when I walked in I was met by a server who...
  15. Thanks to everyone! My first gluten-free trip went....OK, I guess. The Marriott chef was knowledgable and I had no problem there. I did get glutened twice elseqhere. I got glutened while eating the "gluten free" menu items at Boston Market, and later the same day at Outback. However, the Outback manager seemed to contrite that I went back the next night...
  16. I've only been gluten-free for three weeks, yet I noticed problems with milk and milk products shortly after going on the non-gluten diet. The key phrase is "I noticed". Before I went gluten-free I experienced similar problems my entire life but thought that was just how life was -- the problems were "normal" -- all the more so because of a family history...
  17. Next week I fly to Foster City, CA for a week of business meetings. It's my first trip since getting the news that I have to stay gluten-free. I used to pack up and head to the airport, grabbing any food I wanted on the way, eating at airports along the way, and enjoying breakfast buffets and all other meals wherever I wanted to go. I know those days...
